Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)
Cheap Plot and Too Dramatic
As a huge Mission Impossible fan (yes I prefer this series more than 007), I am giving this a fairly low score because I personally feel that the plot is cheap and too common like most protagonist-antagonist action film these days; where the bad guy turns into an ally. The movie did not fail to cope up with latest technologies, but as part of the plot, it is yet again cheap with a plot of having to simply retrieve something from the antagonist in order to save the world.
I also dislike how they portray that Ethan's biggest weakness is women in this movie. I know for a fact that Ethan Hunt cherishes friendship deeply, but this movie entirely focused on female relationships (insufficient appreciation to benji and luther)
In addition, the fighting scenes also gets unoriginal as I somehow sense mimickery to the John Wick fighting styles where they incorporate knives, swords, and batons as a weapon, in contrary to previous MI series that mostly use combat and gun. Relatively, the combat scenes are basic and not even that good, a lot of times unecessary going back and forth.
However, Benji and Luther made this movie so much better though, and I wish they had more scenes. The only exciting scene for me was when Ethan actually arrived on the train. This part had me on the edge of my seat. But when he was trying to get on the train, Jesus, the whole things was made too slow and problematic. In fact, all of the chase scenes took too long and this got me and my family irritated. As a huge fan, I really hope they work on Part 2.
Friends (1994)
Best Sitcom of All Times
Who doesn't know friends? First aired in 1994, friends is definitely the OG of sitcom, where many TV shows released after definitely took this series as an inspiration.
Such a feel-good series which is easy to watch, and impeccable character development where the more episodes you watch, you would feel like you know each character personally at the end, which greatly contributes to the sentimental aspect of this TV show.
Watching this series gives you tears of laughter, tears of joy where it takes you on a emotional rollercoaster of comedy and happiness. As you see the group of friends living their daily life on their late twenties, it is very relatable where the series cover work-life, love, friendship and how harsh reality could be. Started watching this series at 9 years old, and have watchED the entire series seven times, and I am continuing.
Sewu Dino (2023)
Best Indonesian Horror in a While
Dated on 2023, Sewu Dino is revolutionary to Indonesia's movie industry, adapted from a true-story situation. Probably personally one of the scariest movie ever since Insidious (2010). Gave me insane chills and goosebumps!
The plot has a great build-up which created tension that had me at the edge of my seat nearly the entire time. The movie greatly portrays how Indonesia is such a mythical country, accompanied with Indonesian instrument background music and sound effects that was made very disturbing and discomforting (almost pissed myself at the cinema).
As an Indonesian myself, I am very proud of this movie as the entire plot was arranged nicely, leaving me confused, curious and scared, but eventually got a clear explanation for everything towards the end. Sewu Dino has a mild plot twist that horror movies rarely have. It also somehow made me a bit scared of living in Indonesia thinking about such possibilities involving the concept of black magic, which is fairly common in the country.
Paprika (2006)
Must Watch Before You Die
Dated at 2006, Paprika is extremely ahead of its time, being somewhat similar to Inception (2009) and several Black Mirror episodes (2019); the movie's concept is about conciousness and dreams. Very trippy yet has a vintage touch, including elements that were very artistic, but sometimes has an unsettling undertone within the boundary of its scene along with music that plays well together.
Dr. Chiba represents herself as a person who takes her job seriously with professionalism during daytime, yet at the same time, she intends to help others with a nurturing and warm personality by night; somehow representing the need of balance on work and basic human nature. It is interesting how the main character's alter ego Paprika portrays herself is caring, calm and is filled with wisdom when she infiltrates dreams. While compared to the reality of Dr. Chiba who is uptight and serious, she subtly shares the wisdom and caring traits of her alter ego.
There is a sense of creativity, eerieness and a storyline that was all compiled out of the box and all put together so well. Definitely not that typical soft animation with romance or insane action, just filled with so much art and scenes that are unthinkable, making Paprika amazing. Watching this sober gave me a sense of what you may find in an LSD trip.
