Skinned Deep (2004)
10/10
Dreamlike Onslaught of Insane Creativity
2 November 2023
If you love old-school low-budget horror films, want to see something original, have an open mind and don't take things too seriously, you should absolutely watch Skinned Deep.

Even though the story is barely existent, bizzare action scenes constantly alternate with strange dialogue and imagery, which keeps the film from having a dull moment. It's also pretty much the perfect length for something like this, which made it an all-around satisfying experience for me.

The villains are memorable and chock full of surprises that keep coming until the very end of the film. It's obvious that they're a homage to the cannibal family from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but they manage to set themselves apart with their very own brand of insanity. They don't feel like a family as much as their inspirations do, but each of them is enough of a character on their own.

Another notable aspect of the film is the acting. While Warwick Davis (Plates), Jason Dugre (Brain) and, to a lesser extent, Karoline Brandt (Tina) do a great job, pretty much every other actor's delivery is either very stilted or just plain bad. The characters these actors are playing are already weirdos, so this kind of acting actually fits in perfectly with the film's aesthetic.

The real critiques I have are few. A lot of the deaths aren't very creative, which clashes with the over-the-top nature of the rest of the film. While there are many scenes with elaborate special effects, some of the death scenes lack anything memorable. Aside from that, the camerawork gets a little bit too amateurish in a few scenes, which makes them look awkward or confusing.

For the right kind of audience, Skinned Deep is going to be a blast. Just throw logic out the window and enjoy this outrageous rollercoaster ride of unbridled creativity.
