Black Mirror: San Junipero (2016)
One of the greatest television episodes of all time
We all know what Black Mirror tries to be. It warns us of what technology could become in the wrong hands and how both the intended and unintended consequences of said technology can impact the world, so when I first saw San Junipero, I was waiting for it to all come crumbling down. But, to my pleasant surprise, it didn't. This episode is the only one that exclusively shows the good it can do. Even outside the technological afterlife, this is a damn good love story. The progression of everything feels so realistic and relatable for both Kelly and Yorkie, despite them having completely different positions. Kelly can't fathom NOT going to San Junipero and living out the afterlife, and Yorkie can't fathom going to the afterlife without the husband she spent her life with. It is just so goddamn cute to watch them learn more and more how they need each other, and there's few episodes of television that left me as happy and hopeful as this one did. A classic, and a must-watch.
Community: Football, Feminism and You (2009)
The most underrated community episode and one of my favorites
I'm honestly shocked to see this episode ranked so low among the rest of the series. I don't think there's a single Community episode that makes me laugh as much as this one does.
The Shirley-Britta plot is great. It's simple, funny, and I had a nice belly laugh when Britta went to hug Shirley instead of Annie after comforting Annie in the bathroom. It's nothing special, but it's fun and entertaining and I can't ask for much more
Dean Pelton and Pierce trying to create the human person mascot is one of my favorite plots in the whole show. Seeing them somehow CONSTANTLY make the mascot more and more uncanny and ridiculous just made me laugh harder and harder each time, and the final reveal of what the mascot looks like, some guy dressed in a white skin-tight full-body suit with massive facial deformities, is probably the hardest I laughed in the series. Classic Community stuff.
And the main plot of the episode with Jeff trying to get Troy to play football is also fantastic, providing us with several iconic series moments (the "it's in your blood" speech from Jeff, Troy's hilarious thinly-veiled conservative propaganda disguised as stadium chants, etc).
I really think this is Community at its best. All the jokes land, all the characters play an important role in the episode (except Abed, my favorite character who is unfortunately absent until the ending gag), and all of the plots held my attention. I'm not sure what I see in this episode that others don't, but it remains one of my favorites and, to me at least, it's probably the funniest episode of the show.
South Park: Britney's New Look (2008)
When Matt and Trey do it wrong
Matt and Trey are usually pretty damn good at celebrity inclusions. Typically, they're very critical of the celebrities they parody, but they seem to take more of a middle-of-the-road approach here. They don't necessarily make fun of Britney directly, they just use her in a very extreme manner to get their point across. Britney's situation in the episode, similar to her real-life one at the time, is genuinely sad, and the episode doesn't really succeed in satirizing it to a point where it's not sad anymore. I feel like they could have gone a serious direction with it and shown everyone that Britney was basically being forced to live through hell, but after her suicide attempt the episode just goes off the deep end. I felt worse and worse for Britney as the episode went on, and to see her continue being abused and exploited even when her head is blown off is so shocking and sad that I really just feel more uncomfortable than anything. I don't think this episode is totally irredeemable, it was an important issue to tackle and a few of the non-Britney parts are sort of funny, but overall this was a big misstep.
