A Time to Kill (1996)
Should have been much better
Given the cast, I was disappointed how predictable this movie was and how it appeared to have no self awareness with multiple bizarre scenes:
- I like Samuel L Jackson, he does certain roles very well but I just didn't feel a distraught father from him in this
- Jake Brigance, we are told has very little time to prep his case and needs more people, yet he spends most of the pre trial time ambling about town or getting drunk. On one occasion so inebriated he crashed his car into a lamppost outside his office (which he found amusing?!). Not the only time he's DUI. Up all night drinking then fully prepped and looking fresh for his early morning court appearance the next day. Really? Didn't really get why he went from loving husband to almost cheating so quickly?
- Donald Sutherland spends most of the movie actually cradling a bottle of whiskey which would last 10 minutes at the rate he's drinking from it, but makes a miraculous recovery from his alcoholism to provide a needed supportive appearance in the courtroom at the end. Wow
- Keifer Sutherland, good old southern boy with his scoped rifle but somehow misses his target at the courthouse doors. Oh well, at least no one seemed to mind
- The army are brought in with armoured vehicle to restore order outside the courthouse. Move everyone back to a safe perimeter? No! We'll just separate them into 2 different sections (with their impeccable protest signs) right outside the courthouse. What could possibly go wrong!
- 12 jurors against but fully converted after hungover Matthew's dynamite speech. Hugely predictable.
This movie could have been so much better but it sadly isn't.
Pirate Gold of Adak Island (2022)
It was terrible....but I enjoyed it
Just completed the series and not surprised to see so many negative reviews. You feel like you've seen it a million times before, the faux tension, the unnecessary acting, the 'cliffhanger' ending to every episode, the over dramatic reaction to the mundane, the tiring recaps of what you've just watched, etc etc
But.... I found myself hitting 'next episode' with surprising enthusiasm. I really enjoyed the scenery and history of an island I'd never heard of before. The cast were also all likeable people who I wanted to be successful if their goal was legit. Against my better judgment I'd watch S2 if it were made.
Expedition Week: Hunt for the Abominable Snowman (2011)
Predictably poor
I used to believe that the 'National Geographic' title was synonymous with quality and credibility. The more I see of their 'documentaries' the more I realise they are just click bait tabloid nonsense. In the Hunt for the Abominable Snowman we follow presumably Scottish Gerry and his phoney accent between the US and the Region around Everest in the search for Yeti. They do have a couple of specialists in their field which adds a bit of interest, but this is mostly terrible camera work attempting to add drama where none exists and Gerry talking to some unknown person off camera trying to play up absolutely no proof of anything. You are left wondering why anyone would foot the bill for Gerry's pointless trips from the US to Nepal. At least it didn't end with someone saying 'we may never know the truth', but it felt like they should have!
