Priest (1994)
This film was unfairly judged by the church, and some critics
I have wanted to write a review for this film for years. Now that I realize that God loves everyone unconditionally, I have even more respect for the film. Now, I wasn't raised Catholic but I have spoken with friends who are. I will say from what I understand, it's a very conservative religion and hard to live up to it's standards. I like this film for many reasons-one: I'm gay myself and still firmly believe in God. 2: the acting is incredible and very plausible-Linus Roache should have been Oscar nominated in my opinion, the rest of the main cast is amazing too. 3: the script though obviously not original is written with dignity and a sense of humor. The storyline centers around conservative priest Father Greg who has his secrets and his teamwork with Father Matthew. At first they're practically at each others throats due to different morales, but before long, his tone begins to change-he picks up a man at a gay bar, seduces him and then hears about child abuse from a girl at the hands of her unrepentant father. This revelation makes him question everything he knows. I will agree that the ending is a tear-jerker I came close to crying too. Check it out!
Saw 3D (2010)
Too short, but a satisfying wrap-up to a brilliant horror series
I feel some people have been rather harsh with this chapter, Dr. Gordon's re-appearance may not have been a complete surprise to some fans, and after careful observation, I expected it too. However, to say this is the weakest of the series is very unfair to the creators efforts. Keep in mind, after months of friends trying to talk me into watching it, I finally gave in and began the series with an open-mind. I too, not being a big fan of gore/torture, liked and now own the whole series. Strangely enough, I expected somewhat worse from this series-torture wise than what I got. My biggest complaint with parts IV thru 3D is they made them too short, horror films can be 2hours long and still not bore me, the Scream series did the right thing-the story lines added up quickly, and they certainly never got boring.) This series didn't disappoint either, any of it overall, but there were a couple parts in this chapter that were a little cheesy, plus and I am so fed up with the so-called expert critics saying this series is poorly written, I beg to differ, I've been a fan of horror for years-Final Destination 2 and 4, even though I enjoyed them, were more poorly written than this! Long story short, I overall enjoyed this series, and felt it had a nice, bloody wrap-up. This is however my opinion.
Invaders from Mars (1986)
Much better than Mars Attacks!
I like a lot of movie genres, sci-fi is one of them. But when it comes to campyness, this movie, doesn't try to be funny, but a couple antics are pretty silly. Tobe Hooper and his team do what they can with the script and after purchasing the DVD and watching the features, they overall succeed. The big question is, can it be frightening/ and funny and still be enjoyed? Of course...it can! The critics that trashed this film, I think they expected absolute plausibility and when they didn't get it, they found it worthless. I like director Tim Burton's movies-most of the time, but Mars Attacks was pretty cheesy in comparison to this film. Tobe took a somewhat more serious approach to an alien invasion through a child's eyes, and the results were basically effective. Everything that can be said, has been said, questions or comments welcome.
Tales from the Hood (1995)
Rented this for the first time at age 15, own it now, very enjoyable for any horror fan
I wrote a review for this on Amazon a couple years ago, I figured I'd do one here as well. The first time I saw this, I expected a comedy, boy! I was dead wrong! To be honest, the first two stories were so freaky, I had my mom turn it off. Obviously, I'm a lot harder to scare now and like it overall, despite the constant language. It's kind of a social commentary with realism and supernatural overtones mixed together. This was my first horror anthology, followed by several others It's got a decent script, even though some will say 'I've seen all this before' but to me, clichéd doesn't have to mean bad, if the right people are in it/behind and in front of the camera, this was also my first Spike Lee film, so I won't judge it on those merits. I know he didn't direct it, but I've heard about a lot of his movies, some look pretty good. By the way, I'm not black either, but I have a large amount of respect for them. I'm getting off track here, bottom line: if you like horror stories with some semblance of reality, you'll probably enjoy this too, but you'll have to overlook the language.
