Best Gay/Queer themed movie in a long time
24 September 2023
What a wonderful movie!!! Will be re-watching many times. Probably the best Gay themed movie since "Call Me By Your Name" or "God's Own Country."

The acting is excellent. The lead actors are perfectly matched - they have great chemistry and deliver an outstanding performance. Major props to Taylor Zakhar Perez (as Alex) and Nicholas Galitzine (as Henry). I also enjoyed Uma Thurman's outstanding performance.

I have heard there were deleted scenes. Apparently they were deleted for being too sexually explicit. Actually, I would have preferred if the movie had some more sexually explicit scenes than the ones I saw.

Despite that, I still give this movie a 10/10 rating.

An excellent telling of the Whitney Houston story
28 December 2022
This movie is a must see for all Whitney Houston fans and more generally, fans of pop culture.

"Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody" paints the portrait clearly of one of the most successful recording artists who ever lived. We are reminded of why Whitney rose to such a high level of success. We are also painfully reminded of the many problems that went along with her success.

The vocal performances, using the original Whitney recordings, are nothing short of amazing. It is so tragic when someone so hugely gifted ends up in so much trouble. This movie works very well as a great tribute to the late Whitney Houston.

It also features a full cast of stellar actors. Naomi Ackie is outstanding as Whitney and Stanley Tucci is brilliant as Clive Davis. For sure, they deserve Oscar nominations.

I would have liked to see more about Whitney's efforts at a comeback and more about her childhood, but at about 2.5 hours, I guess it would have been hard to keep this movie under 3 hours if any additional material had been included. As it is, this move contains the most important points about the legend of Whitney Houston.

Thank you for bringing back Top Gun!
15 June 2022
I saw this movie yesterday and I can't stop thinking about it. I thought the original Top Gun was a great movie and it was a big surprise that 35+ years later, a sequel was made.

The sequel is based on the original Top Gun and takes the movie to new levels that are astonishing in many different ways. Obviously, the action scenes are completely amazing. Beyond that, this is a movie very much about relationships. Relationships about teams and relationships focusing on 1-1 dynamics. Painful history with a lot of hope and suspense to see how it unfolds.

In the end, the most significant aspect of this movie is Tom Cruise's performance. He truly inhabits the character Maverick. Tom Cruise is one of the best actors of the 20th and 21st century and he proves it again and again in this movie.

Hint: Watch/Re-watch the original Top Gun, then run out to see this movie.

The Beauty Queen of Jerusalem is a Masterpiece!
31 May 2022
I just finished watching Season 1, all 10 Episodes, on Netflix. This TV series is amazing.

In part, this series is great because of all of the great acting. It features a wonderful ensemble cast. The way the show is filmed is also key to its success.

It's a very complicated show and some degree of concentration and patience is needed to fully appreciate it. By going back and forth in time, it can be confusing but it really does make a lot of sense.

Exploration of family dynamics against the backdrop of critical historical events is the true beauty of this show.

Would recommend this to anyone who's up for something on the heavy side. There are some truly shocking moments. For those who just want a "guilty pleasure," this is not for you.

Boy Erased (2018)

"Boy Erased" is a MUST SEE Movie, even more relevant today than when first released.
4 November 2021
Those who watch the movie "Boy Erased" will gain a better understanding of the issue of Conversion Therapy. This is a very dangerous practice and the public needs to be better informed. This movie is very hard to watch, but important to watch as society tries harder to better understand the meaning of Diversity.

Lucas Hedges, delivers a stunning performance and proves he's one of the best young actors out there. He was born on December 12, 1996 in Brooklyn Heights, New York.

Lucas Hedges is an American actor, well known for playing Patrick Chandler in Manchester by the Sea (2016). That performance earned him an Academy Award, USA, nomination for best supporting actor.

His performance in Boy Erased earned him two best Lead actor nominations: Australian Academy of Cinema and Australian Film Critics.

Just not the right movie for Timothée Chalamet
4 November 2021
For those of you who have seen Timothée Chalamet act in "Call Me By Your Name," (2017) and/or "Beautiful Boy" (2018), you know how immensely talented this young actor is given the right role. In "A Rainy Day in New York" (2019), he seems like he's wondering around lost in a movie that he just doesn't belong in. Well, these things happen and I'm sure Timothée will continue to shine in movies to come along in the future. Final note: Elle Fanning, howerver, is a very pleasant surprise, in the role of Ashleigh. Hoping to see more of her soon.

Pray Away (2021)
9/10
Gay Conversion Therapy on trial
8 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I Just finished watching the movie "Pray Away" which began streaming a few days ago on Netflix. I knew it was about Gay ("LGBTQ+") conversion therapy. I knew it would be hard to watch. What I didn't realize is that it is practically unwatchable.

As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I thought it was important to watch this movie and I was correct. I started watching this morning and after about 30 minutes, I had to hit the pause button. Hours later, I bit the bullet and watched the rest of the movie.

"Pray Away" is a documentary about former leaders of the Gay conversion therapy group, Exodus, which started in the 1970's and ended about three decades later. When it began, the leaders of Exodus promised Gay people that they could be changed by attending the Exodus program, which largely consisted of Bible study, prayer and other teachings and rituals. The leaders told their victims that it was wrong that they were Gay. Same Sex attraction was considered a sickness but there was hope - by attending Exodus, people could become Heterosexual which is what G-d wanted.

To add credibility to this message given by the Fundamentalist Christian leaders of Exodus, psychologists were brought in to validate this way of thinking.

But conversion therapy does not work. People who go into conversation therapy, often because their parents force them into it, end up hating themselves because they don't change and they believe it's their own fault. Some people actually believe they have successfully changed but eventually realize that they were only lying to themselves.

The leaders of Exodus came to realize that conversion therapy does not work and they put an end to the organization. But what about all the people who were severely traumatized by what they experienced in Exodus? And while Exodus went out of business, new conversation therapy groups have replaced it and are still going strong.

I wish all of this was an exaggeration and/or a dramatization. It's not. I have a friend, Carl, who was raised in an Orthodox Jewish home. His parents sent him off to Jonah, a Jewish conversion therapy organization. He told a few people, including me, about some of the practices of Jonah. I remember him talking about how one of the Jonah leaders forced him to stand in front of a mirror and remove his clothing, one item at a time, until he was standing in front of the mirror completely naked. He was ordered to hold his penis, supposedly to get more in touch with his masculinity, which was supposed to help cure him of his homosexual desires. It didn't work and fortunately Carl left Jonah. He sued them for malpractice. Jonah was forced out of business, but other groups have since taken its place.

Why should people watch this movie? Whether Heterosexual, Gay or anywhere along the LGBTQ+ spectrum, people need to be reminded how destructive conversation therapy is to its victims. If you are approached by a person concerned that he/she/they might be LGBTQ+, reassure this person that this is how G-d created him/her/them and these people are beautiful the way they are. Point them in the right direction. Help get them into a legitimate support group that can be a safe space and help them along the road to healing.

Before Stonewall (1984) : A Must See Documentary
8 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Directors Greta Schiller and Robert Rosenberg pull off a miracle here. They use authentic archival material, such as film clips, photos and interviews with real people who lived through it, to tell the story of the struggles of the LGBTQ+ ("Gay") community in America in the decades leading up to the famous Stonewall Inn riots of 1969.

The now famous Stonewall riots clearly did not just happen suddenly. The tension was building for centuries with this film focusing on Gay life in America between 1900 and the 1960s. It portrays a dark story of how Gay people were harassed, abused, humiliated, and forced to hide while being hunted down by the straight establishment (many of whom were closeted Gays themselves.)

Gay people from all over the U. S. moved to the Gay meccas such as San Francisco, CA, Harlem, NYC and of course, Greenwich Village, NYC, to escape into worlds of Gay bars, clubs, bathhouses, etc., at least to find some temporary relief. While they met people, made new friends, and found community, they were also terrified of being outed. Being outed meant beatings, arrests, almost certain termination from one's job, and pressure to out other Gay people.

Police raids on Gay bars, such as Stonewall, were routine, and people arrested often found their names printed in local newspapers as part of a list of deviant, mentally ill misfits. In fact, being Gay was considered both a crime and a mental illness. Gay people could be forced into mental institutions since after all they were "sick." They were hunted down like communists were hunted down in the late 1940s and 1950s, during Senator Joseph McCarthy's hideous witch hunts.

(The film does mention that Gays were sent to concentration camps during WWII, along with Jews and other minorities.)

So why does this fact-based documentary matter so much today, in 2021, in the post-2015 era of legal same sex marriage in America? Partly as a reminder, but more to educate the Gay youth of today who are able to live a much more comfortable, though not problem free, existence. There are also pockets in America today where conditions for Gay people are still unbearable. There's much work to be done to achieve true Equality and the risk is ever present that progress that has been made can be rolled back in a heartbeat. So, Gays need films like this to study and learn from to be prepared. The film brings out the importance of unity and community self-organizing. And a note to today's Gay youth: never forget the generations who came before you and paved the way for you to have the rights and freedoms that you have today.

Loved this movie
25 January 2021
Watched it last nite on Netflix. Really makes you think about your own discovery and coming out. That fear of saying "I'm Gay" to a family member is handled with respect and honesty. This is not just another gay themed movie. It really is special. Totally related and actually still very relevant in 2021 even though the movie came out in 1998. Just watch it. You'll understand what I mean.

Queer as Folk (2000–2005)

Queer As Folk (QAF) - The bravest show ever! A true "Breakthrough"
30 August 2015
It was a different world when this show started around 2000. Hate and discrimination against the LGBT community was in full force. There was no same sex marriage, at least in the US. Now it's the law throughout the entire US.

I have to call QAF "Brave" and "Breakthrough" because it was the first TV show to feature a cast of LGBT people as the main characters. Hopefully this helped educate people and played a role in the advancements of civil rights for the LGBT community.

I'd love to watch all the original shows unedited! I'd love it even more if a new QAF launched, set in the world of 2015 and beyond.

Disturbia (2007)

A Thriller with a Sense of Humour
28 May 2007
I saw "Disturbia" last night. It was obvious that up and coming actor Shia LaBeouf did a great acting job. He was perfectly cast and I think it's safe to say that most people root for him throughout the movie.

After thinking a bit more today, I realized that the movie is really more clever than I had originally thought. Pulling off a thriller that's part comedy, part horror show, and part teenager romance is no easy task. Overall, the pieces fit well in this fast, energetic film.

Getting back to the leading man -- Shia LaBeouf. He's only about 20 but has already built up quite an impressive resume. He's made appearances in movies including the recent films "Bobby" and "I, Robot" plus episodes of some of the best TV shows such as "ER" and "The X Files." Now he's front and center. He does not have typical movie star looks. He does not look like he spends half his day working out with a personal trainer. He's all substance and with "Disturbia," proves that he belongs in the driver's seat.

Looks like a new Sci-Fi Hit!
4 July 2006
Saw the first episode. The show has great potential as a Sci-Fi Mystery. So if the writers keep the quality up, this new TV show could be a big hit, or more likely a cult classic. Am already curious to see how things unfold. Just hope this does not turn out to be a "just for teens" show -- that remains to be seen.

Should definitely appeal to fans of:

1. The Bourne Identity (Movie) 2. The Bourne Supremacy (Movie) 3. John Doe (TV show, no longer on the air) 4. Rainman (Movie) 5. The Matrix (Movie) 6. A Beautiful Mind (Movie)

and more ...

Worth checking out. (ABC Fri. PM.)

The Aviator (2004)
10/10
The amazing life of Howard Hughes brilliantly portrayed by Scorsese & DiCaprio
9 January 2005
I saw this movie last night and I can't stop thinking about it. The more I think about "The Aviator," the more I realize what a brilliant movie this is because it succeeds so well at depicting the life of a man, Howard Hughes, who was highly complex -- full of conflicts and contradictions, a "super human" and a human just like the rest of us.

I didn't know much about Howard Hughes before seeing this film but almost immediately I found myself truly liking him, hoping he would succeed at whatever he tried and deeply sympathetic when he encountered setbacks. In a way, Howard Hughes was very different from me but there were enough common threads to allow me to truly relate to him.

Leonardo DiCaprio once again delivers a remarkable performance. He captures the essence of Hughes and is highly successful at bringing Hughes to life on the big screen (an extraordinary accomplishment).

This film is also an affirmation that Martin Scorsese, the film's director, is one of the best directors of all time. I think the team of DiCaprio and Scorsese is perfect. They also worked together on the "Gangs of New York" (2002), which like "The Aviator" (2004), reminded me of what great film making is all about.

"The Aviator" also features terrific performances by Cate Blanchett, Kate Beckinsale, Alec Baldwin, Alan Alda and others. Everyone involved in this project shines brightly!
