Zorro (2024)
Some history involved.
Zorro was written in 1919, by Johnston McCulley, serialized in "The Curse of Capistrano". This particular version includes native Californians, which had been mostly domesticated onto missions and became a dwindling culture. Many were servants and field workers. The work was culturally inaccurate, but introduced an enduring character.
This English dubbed version of a Spanish production, is laudable at lest for including the indigenous people, although some of the Spanish and Mexican culture is from a later period (a woman would never be seen without her duena). Fight choreography is fair to good with some excellent passages, much of the dubbing uses poorly structured sentences, which catches in my ear/mind.
I'm a bit put off that Zorro himself looks too European, rather than Mestizo, but that's closer to the way the story was written. The sons of the rich, returned to Spain for education, before returning to take over the reins of the father's estate. Earlier periods would see young women returning to Spain to marry and either stay or rerun with their husband. Original settlers were called "Peninsulars" coming from Spain, or colonial, if born in New Spain. It was a rank thing.
The program doesn't spend a lot of time on that the way the first Banderas story hinted at.
MEAD (2022)
Heavy on the bass
A mildly entertaining, CGI heavy sci fi with a fair to middling plot and good theory of AI.
HOWEVER the biggest detractor (aside from the poor acting) is the bass-heavy soundtrack. Almost impossible to follow the storyline and dialogue. I even adjusted my graphic equalizer which left the dialogue tinny and still iveramped with bass. I shut it off about half way. I admit impressed. B for effort and D for delivery.
Writer doesn't have real world experience with real combat pilots. Americans would blow right through illusions. These pilots know it yet engage and interact instead of blasting away. Poor plotting.
Almost Paradise (2020)
Pink lipstick
The main character wears pink lipstick. Make up dept really screwed the pooch.
Story lines are ok, supporting actors are very good.
The actress who plays Kai is superb. The episode with the diving scenes was a showcase for her in particular.
