Lunch (1972)
Out to lunch
6 April 2002
Slow, vaguely arty, ultimately tedious "adult" film about erotic happenings in an apartment building. There's something resembling a plot, but I have to admit I lost track of it. It's kind of confusing. At one point, you hear a man's voice on the soundtrack repeating the same line over and over and over and over. More original than your average adult flick, but it still doesn't add up to much. I can't get the title song out of my head, though.

Horrible

You know you're watching a bad movie when you think, "What is Brigitte Nielsen doing in THIS?" A really awful movie. And I've seen some BAD movies. It all has to do with the world's most successful action-movie star getting caught in a murder conspiracy. You will not for a second believe that this guy could be the hottest actor in the world. Actually, everything about this movie is absurd and unconvincing. The only conceivable reason to watch it is Lynn Lowry, who hasn't been seen much since the '70s. But I'm sure you can think of more useful ways to pass the time.

More fun than EASY RIDER

An interesting anti-war movie, though the psychedelic sequences and "hip" dialogue make it at times humorously dated. The most striking feature is its alternating color/black and white cinematography, similar to NATURAL BORN KILLERS. Did Oliver Stone see this? Sometimes silly and amateurish, but still worth watching.

The Image (1975)
Whips, chains, etc.

Okay movie starring Carl Parker, that swarthy-looking guy from Radley Metzger's SCORE, which was better than this. It's well-made, like all of Metzger's movies, but it's hard to like unless you're into this kind of subject matter. There are some pretty funny moments, though. I particularly liked the intentionally obvious Freudian imagery that keeps cropping up. Actually, the whole movie is about as cheerfully un-P.C. as they get. Only in the '70s...

An extremely weird and inexplicably fascinating movie about... uhhhhhhh... well... hmmmmm... not really sure. But there's a woman who walks around town while all kinds of bizarre things happen around her. I can vividly recall the scene where she slowly walks down a spiral staircase. The whole movie is like that, full of striking imagery that doesn't seem to add up to anything. Maybe it doesn't. And admittedly, it drags at times. It reminded me of EYES WIDE SHUT, only stranger. Don't say I didn't warn you.

The whole world isn't watching

A long, slow movie about a fictional '60s radical group. They talk and talk and talk about making revolution. Then they talk some more. Every so often, violence breaks out for no particular reason. It's all pretty murky and hard to follow, but I think that's supposed to be the point, as if these wannabe revolutionaries are so caught up in their socialist fantasies that they've lost track of the real world. I found it fairly mesmerizing in its gritty realism, but I have a feeling a lot of people wouldn't be able to sit through it.

On the Road--Again

Various "Beat Generation" luminaries hang out in a New York apartment. I usually couldn't care less about the Beats, but this short film is fairly absorbing, thanks mostly to Jack Kerouac's vibrant narration. It makes me nostalgic for the '50s, and I wasn't even around back then.

Just when you thought it was safe...

An X-rated JAWS parody? Yeah, and it's a lot of fun, too. This appealingly goofy movie has Terri Hall as a killer mermaid; you also get to see some talking puppets, and the late, great Brother Theodore hamming up the place in the Quint role. It's all more silly than sexy, but the off-the-wall comic bits often hit the mark. Recommended for fans of weird humor.

Privilege (1967)
It's only rock 'n' roll

Vivid, effective mockumentary about a wildly popular rock star whom the Powers that Be are trying to turn into a tool of the state. As a political document, PRIVILEGE is about as subtle as a brick thrown through a window, but it's still very well-made and will likely stick in your memory. Visually compelling, with a pretty good soundtrack. It's also a rare opportunity to see '60s fashion plate Jean Shrimpton on the big screen.
