The Irishman (2019)
Deep dive into a haunting lifestyle
The Irishman sets up a beautiful atmosphere and character backstory, but it comes at the heavy cost of pacing. Originally, while I was viewing this film at the 2.5-hour mark, I thought it was nearing its conclusion and wrapping up the character's respective plotlines. However, the last ~45 minutes are often overlooked, but in my opinion is the heart of this film, feeling like a beautiful rendition of the book 'The Hero with a Thousand Faces.' It delves into Frank's past regrets in the form of his failures as a friend, husband, and role model for his child, whom he is now unable to connect with as an old man.
The last hour truly cements this movie as a unique gangster film among the rest, showing the haunting reality of the lifestyle that leads him to rot away his last years in loneliness, unable to connect with his last few living relatives. Eventually, the culmination of haunting memories and loneliness causes him to fade away into the cloud of distant happy memories.
