The Hollow (2015)
Not spectactular, but certainly underrated.
3 Sisters visit their aunt on the eve of a 100 year witches curse where the witch returns in the form of a rather cool looking monster to seek vengeance on the islands inhabitants. This is not too different from your typical "evil monster on a rampage" movie, but for a modest budget movie, it's very well done and I found it entertaining. I expected to see a 6 rating when I came here. I rate it 6.5, but have to give it a seven since I can't do halfzies.
Trigger Points (2020)
I can't believe I watched as much as I did.
Supremely boring and uneventful. It's one of those where you keep watching in hopes something interesting will happen to justify the time you've already invested in it, but it just doesn't materialize. I gave up on it half way through and was bored out of my skull. The person watching with me shared my sentiment.
Joker (2019)
Murdering the Joker
This film tries desperately to devillify the most stylish and charismatic villain in the DC universe and excruciatingly transform him into a poster child for mental illness in the most tedious manner possible.. This version of the Joker lacks any semblance of style, luster, flair, or charisma, leaving me to wonder why anyone would bother investing the time and money required to create this turkey, much less watch it.
They've murdered the Joker for the sake of some social commentary and PC promotion. I don't deny that mental illness is a real issue or that attention should be brought to it, but folks watch movies about supervillians to see super-villainy, not a 2 hour public service announcement. I hung in there as long as I could hoping for this movie to redeem itself, but about 3 quarters of the way through I could take no more of watching it spin it's wheels.
If you are a fan of the Jack Nicholson or Heath Ledger versions of the Joker then you will likely find this film as painful to watch as I did.
The Lion King (2019)
What's with the haters?
After reading some of the top listed reviews here I was almost reluctant to watch the movie. I don't understand the criticism. Of course you're not going to get the same expressiveness in a photo-realistic animal character that you would from a cartoon, nor should one expect that. But this movie has much of the charm of the original in the story telling combined with CG artistry that is absolutely stunning.
This movie should be accepted at face value and not compared to the cartoon from which it was based. It has it's own magic. The incredible effort put into the graphics was not lost on me, the animators didn't get a hair or blade of grass out of place. The music score was better in the original, but that was a high bar to clear, but overall this movie should not be missed.
The Ninth Gate (1999)
The Ninth Hour
I thought this movie would never end. I watched this movie a long time ago but must have blocked it out and after having watched it again recently I can understand why. Johnny Depp didn't look the part, in fact he looked like a middle aged College freshman, and his acting throughout the movie was lackluster. Much of the plot was predictable, most of plot scenarios seemed very contrived, and the movie was incredibly repetitive. I somehow managed to stay awake to the end and yes, I got it, but after nearly 2 and a half hours of watching Johnny drink, smoke, drive, and get clobbered over the head over and over, I just didn't care. This movie was a stupidly long cigarette ad.
The basic premise of this movie had such potential, but that potential was never reached. Emmanuelle Seigner and Frank Langella played their roles well, but it was not nearly enough to save this turkey. Roman Polanski has made some stellar movies, but this by no means can be considered one of them. I would recommend this movie as a good non-addictive sedative for those with insomnia, but that's it. I gave this movie 2 out of 10 because I docked extra point for missed potential.
Ink (2009)
Surreal, Disjointed, Overrated and Unwatchable
I watch a lot of horror and sci-fi movies, including the low budget B movies. I watch the B movies looking for those rare gems, and I can tell you without a doubt that this is not one of them. In fact, it speaks volumes that I couldn't sit through very much of this flick, maybe 10 minutes is all I could endure. I was fooled by the rating this movie got, and the description sounded good too. I don't understand why films like this even get made much less receive ratings usually reserved for Hollywood blockbusters. I think that the demographic of movie watchers that go for this kind of dribble are also the sort more likely to write reviews, so it ends up being a lopsided thing. Well I'm here to balance the scales and tell people who actually enjoy well acted, well written, and well directed movies not to bother with this pile of rubbish. I've seen better amateur Youtube videos by people with handy-cams. If all a film needs for you to fall in love with it is a child, then you'll love this one, but if you expect substance, you won't find it here.
Fields of the Dead (2014)
Not so bad horror flick
While I stop short of calling this a 'good' movie, it's slightly better than so-so. I watch a lot of horror B movies, and a great many deserve a rating of 2.6 and around there, but that would be a bit harsh of a rating for this one in my opinion. The acting is decent, directing, writing, and composition are also respectable, so I tentatively give this one a 5. I've most certainly seen worse. If you enjoy possession type movies and run-of-the-mill slashers, you'll probably like this movie. I don't expect this one to win any Emmies, but it was alright as low budget horrors go. When I decided to review this movie I wasn't expecting to have to write a novel about it. While I am required to write at least ten lines or 1000 words, there really isn't anything left to tell. It's a low budget horror movie, not a deep thought provoking drama with symbolic undertones commenting on societal attitudes and an emotionally rich plot and musical score. Perhaps the folks at IMDb don't believe folks should bother reviewing movies that are fairly basic in content. If that's not the case perhaps they might consider revisiting the requirements for posting a review.
