Read the book. Miss the movie.
25 August 2002
This movie stunk from the get-go. The acting was AWFUL, the screenplay was even worse, and whoever wrote/produced/ruined the screenplay deleted major scenes from the plot and watered it down to cater to the masses, who would probably also complain if they'd read the book. The book would do terrifically as a major motion picture WITH THE ORIGINAL STORYLINE INTACT (and some better acting!). Our biggest complaint with the acting was Mischa Barton - she was wrong for the part, unbelievable, insincere, detached... we could go on. Unfortunately, some talented actors were dragged down in the making of this TV movie (namely, James Whitmore, Ryan Merriman, and Jared Padalecki). When the script actually got around to using something from the book (i.e., Rob's conversation about where we go when we die), the vapid and shallow surrounding context made it seem contrived and out of place. Then there were the strange words, terms, and phrases used in the dialogue: "figger," "Hi, Harbor Master!," "the drift net! It's got Ynid!" etcetera etcetera etcetera. If anyone is considering making an award-winning and all around fabulous book into a movie, FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS HOLY, stick to the original plot AND characters! Thank you for your time.

100 Girls (2000)
A movie that tries to be feminist, but contradicts itself
19 July 2002
100 Girls is an interesting movie. I know I've never seen this plot used before. Assuming you already know what it's about, I never would have guessed who the girl in the elevator REALLY was. I suspected it was a totally different girl. This movie is, for the most part, quite feminist... it follows the lead character as he delves more and more into the lives and minds of girls, and as he does this he breaks his personal barriers between the sexes. However, while the film tries very hard to not be sexist, I saw more naked breasts in this movie than in any other. It wasn't necessary in many to all of the instances that this happened. Be forewarned.

Big Trouble (2002)
Probably the funniest movie I've ever seen..
18 July 2002
And based on the funniest book I've ever read. I saw the movie before I read the book. My best friend and I saw this movie together (we're both Ben Foster fans) and we laughed so hard I thought we might die. The cast was excellent... even Johnny Knoxville, who really annoys me. Zooey Deschanel is great. And the toad (which is NOT a puppet) was hilarious. Everything was great, especially the running gags. It's almost as funny as the book. The ending of the movie was changed a bit, as I found after finishing the book, but I think I actually like the movie ending better, if only for sentimental reasons.

Get Over It (2001)
It took me about a year to take a chance on this movie...
18 July 2002
Warning: Spoilers
Warning, possible spoilers...

First off, I only rented this movie because Ben Foster is in it. He was way, way, way better in Liberty Heights... Get Over It's script in no way gave Foster a chance to show his incredible talent.

I enjoyed Get Over It, but only because it was so silly and strange and lighthearted. There were too many unneeded characters, like Maggie and whoever Sisqo's character was. However, there were many interesting characters, like Berke's extremely liberal parents, the theatre director, and Steven (more on Steven to come). There has been some harsh criticism aimed at Shane West, but I thought he was pretty good. The phony accent (yes, it was supposed to be that way... didn't anyone catch the blurb about Madonna?) was hilarious, and his acting has improved since Liberty Heights. However, A Walk to Remember is a better showcase for West's ability.

Get Over It's script pretty much sucked, but the musical numbers were quite enjoyable. Especially the opening sequence, where everyone dances down the street. I've always wanted to see a goofy teen movie where outlandish musical numbers are thrown in.

Finally, I would like to comment on Steven, or "Little Steve". It's the Boy with the Purple Socks from Harriet the Spy! Dov Tiefenbach is an excellent actor who definitely needs to be placed in larger roles. If only one reason is needed to see this movie, it's Tiefenbach's hilarious, if small, performance.

Holiday in the Sun (2001 Video)
cute.
5 July 2002
As a film, Holiday in the Sun was not very good. There were holes in the plot (where was Brianna Wallace in the second half of the movie?!) and the character developments were pretty awful. But, I love the Olsen twins and the extremely attractive guys they manage to dig up out of Hollywood, so I would watch this movie multiple times. If you're a fan of Mary-Kate and Ashley, you'd probably like this movie. If you're looking for a decent film with substance, search elsewhere.
