Our Flag Means Death: This Is Happening (2022)
It is about family
This is happening - spoilers ahead. I won't write about the main plot of this episode because it is great and there are no questions here - the improvised scene between Stede and Ed tells it all. Plus Nathan Foad as Lucius is amazing.
But the episode has a lot of good stuff in it, the most intriguing one being the Jim / Siete Gallos subplot. This is both a fascinating story and a shout-out to spaghetti westerns in the way the flashbacks are shown. I loved this to bits. Killer nun, gang of villains, traumatic origin story all in the comedy series. It is genius, it is stepping out of the genre, but not quite abandoning the comedy, it is playful, it is amazing tv.
The Oluwande / Jim relationship has a chance to shine here. One of my favourite quotes being - "I could be family".
This episode is about family in the end.
Our Flag Means Death: The Art of F**kery (2022)
The friendship theme
This is an excellent episode of this wonderful series. It is theatrical to the core, with grand spectacle organized by Stede the Gentleman Pirate to impress the Dread Pirate Blackbeard, whom he came to regard as a friend.
This friendship theme appears throughout the episode. Starting with enthusiastic awe Stede has for Blackbeard and his theatrics. Going strong with the "intervention" Izzy stages for his captain, whom he deems unhinged. And ending with the most tender of friendship confessions scenes ever.
The humour of Our Flag Means Death shine here with great acting by the whole cast, especially Rhys Darby as the excited, fangirling, oblivious and tender Stede Bonnet.

This is the episode I truly fell in love with this show
This is the episode I truly fell in love with this show.
It is funny, it is witty, and full of excellent acting. Special shout out to Rory Kinnear, who steals a lot of scenes.
We get the beginnings of background stories for some of our pirates. We get to meet some other relevant characters. We get the sword fight of sorts.
Stede Bonnet the gentle man and the pirate is overcoming his crisis in a most comedic way but without being the ridicule. The crew of the Revenge gets to cooperate and learn even if some of it might not soak in.
It is excellent storytelling and lots of humor that defines this show.
