Barry Lyndon (1975)
My favorite Kubrick film
I love this film. So much better than The Shining which I think is his worst. This story follows the arc of a tragic but wonderful life. Ryan O'Neal is perfectly cast as is the whole film. Ask any film person, it's all about casting. That's why The Shining didn't work. Scatman and the kid were miscast. But this film is beautiful to watch and has an incredible story. It's the perfect film, like looking at a Dutch master painting that moves. It's long but not boring and if you think it is then you are boring. This was my go to first date film. If the woman found it dull, there was no second date. It's Kubricks best film!
Mother! (2017)
A Dream.
Probably this is a movie for intelligent movie people. Your average drooling American film-goer will be out off because it isn't a typical trite horror fi!m. It's a true psychological drama in the vein of Kubrick. I saw some Polanski influence too. It's one of the best movies ever to show what it would be like to be trapped inside someone's vivid dream. And it's completely different. If you want to see the same old Hollywood junk, this isn't for you. If you have a brain and want to be challenged, then you'll love this dive into a deep, dark and meaningful nightmare. Genius work. A work of art.
Tulip Fever (2017)
I agree, ignore the bad reviews.
I went to see it despite all the negative publicity and thoroughly enjoyed it. Especially when you consider all the carp out there. It's a smart screenplay, well acted and we'll cast. And you get to watch Vikander for two hours! Honest, it's pretty good, and entertaining.A nice respite from the usual summer junk. I loved it.
Dunkirk (2017)
I don't get the accolades.
Seems like this would have made a nice hour long PBS special but as a movie it was dull. The comparisons to Kubrick are blasphemous. This could have been a Transformers movie, another masturbatory exercise in special effects. We live in such an era of low expectations. No story here at all, just an excuse for reenactment of a noble part of a war. That's it. Nothing to see here. I was so disappointed.
Crisis in Six Scenes (2016)
Great work.
Woody plays to his strength here. He very smartly plays the neurotic character of his old days and it's still very funny. He also is a great judge of female talent and Miley Cyrus just kills it here. By that I mean she is fantastic. Amazing, in this late stage he can still be his old funny self. I loved it!
Watermark (2013)
I'm conflicted
Is it a beautiful movie? Yes, it really is. I was transfixed and enraptured by the magnificent images in the movie. But I must say I really didn't 'get' why they put in the scenes of the Bellagio water show. I'm sure that water is all recycled. So it's not an example of waste. And the surfers? What is up with that. I loved the holy water scenes. And yes they went away from making it a talking head movie but they still had a couple of people talk about water. I just think they missed the mark here. They could have made a real education for people about water but they didn't. But it's worth seeing because it is do damn beautiful.
