Barbarian (2022)
Stop caring about men and save yourself
That's what I've taken away from this movie. The main character is ready to put her own life on the line again and again and again, all for a couple of men she doesn't even really know. I get it, she's a good person. I even understand that maybe the first time you hear somebody asking for help from the darkest depths of a scary basement, and you kinda like the guy, you'll try to help. But once you watch a scary creature kill said guy in front of you, and then barely escape the place yourself weeks later, why the heck are you going back down there? You better believe that if I were Tess, I would have been out of the house and on my way back to civilization the moment I saw a creepy basement room with a bed and a bucket. And DEFINITELY after being kidnapped and almost killed.
But Tess gets back down. And what does she get for it? She gets shot and thrown off a tower, and all that not by the "monster", but by the guy she came back to save. So the take-away from this movie is quite simple: ditch the men and save yourself! You know if it was them in Tess' place, nobody would be coming back to get her.
In case you couldn't tell, this is a light-hearted review. I enjoyed some aspects of the movie, but ultimately felt disappointed in the end.
Suspiria (2018)
This movie shows and barely tells
You know the advice of "show, don't tell" anyone who's ever tried to write something has heard? This movie is an interesting example of it. I watched it two weeks ago and have been thinking about it and digesting the plot since. Is it pretentious? Yes. Does it take itself very seriously? Yes. Did I know what was going on 100% of the time? No. I still loved every minute of it.
The movie is long and at times confusing. The viewer has to put in some work into piecing everything together, so definitely only watch it if you are willing to take a wild ride through a coven-run dance school. I will say this - the last sequence is intense. Insane, even, but in my opinion it brings everything together beautifully. I will be back to watch it again.
