Garfield and Friends: The Sludge Monster/U.S. Acres: Fortune Kooky/Heatwave Holiday (1989)
Best Garfield and Friends episode
This is a review of "The Sludge Monster" not the other parts because this one really stood out to me. I won't spoil it so you can go check it out. First off, the music. There is a musical number in between and wow is it good. It's not Bach or anything but it's good for a cheap 80's Garfield show. The atmosphere is also fantastic. I love the mud and rain. It really makes the place feel swampy. The feeling of hopelessness and being stranded in a hotel at night is also pretty unnerving. And the characters designs. Other than Garfield, Odie, and Jon all of the characters shown here are new, They also all have creepy designs (The hotel's owner is my favorite). And yeah that's my spoiler free review. Give it a watch it's on YouTube.
Garfield and Friends: Mystic Manor/U.S. Acres: Flop Goes the Weasel/The Legend of Long Jon (1989)
Pretty Spooky
This is only a review of "Mystic Manor" because I don't have as much to say on the other segments. I'll start off by saying Mystic Manor is tied with the Sludge Monster for best Garfield and Friends episode. It has a really spooky feel and the mansion though based on Psycho (1960) from the outside the inside is all original. It is also a very trippy episode. Most of the fear doesn't come from ghosts or monsters but the houses strangeness itself. The house isn't just haunted, it is alive. This is shown by the mysterious echos, doors to other realities and the fact that when there is a monster it can teleport from floor to floor at ease. And the twist that the house was still an attraction and all that was just to scare them was funny yet still surreal. They never explain the monster or magic so the house is still haunted. All I'm all this episode is great and has a brilliant mood.
