Surprisingly good.
23 December 2023
Did you know that social media fosters toxic relationships among its users, who only gain clout and/or material gains by performing inanely for each other? In this fundamentally unbalanced type of community network, individuals are complicit for as long as they allow themselves to be seduced by the illusion of power-wow! That's the sort of asked and answered wisdom at the heart of "Share?," an ungenerous techno-satire about an unnamed man who wakes up in an unfurnished cell with only a computer monitor for company.

There's a little more to this sketchy sci-fi parable, all about a wary cipher, #000000014 (Melvin Gregg), who learns how to not only survive, but maybe even game his prison's live-streaming camera network, which connects imprisoned users through their respective computer monitors. But only a little. "Share?" ostensibly has a dark sense of humor, too, yet even its jokes point a lazy finger at viewers.

"Share?" is only 70+ minutes long, and it shows. We see the movie's world through the unblinking eye of #000000014's computer monitor, the one he also uses to broadcast a live video stream from inside his grey brutalist cell. Why is he there, and who's keeping him? That's an irrelevant mystery, according to co-writer/director Ira Rosensweig and co-writer Benjamin Sutor. Rather, we're supposed to focus on the patternmaking logic that leads #000000014 to figure out how to get attention from unseen viewers and earn points that he can convert into amenities, like food, clothes, or an inflatable mattress. #000000014 spends a lot of time peering into and through the camera frame since it's presented as a monitor. His computer seems pretty basic, given frequent prompts like "Share?" and "Good food?" It's almost as if social media and technology only grant its users' limited agency, maaan.

Bits and pieces...
5 September 2022
While there are elements of this film and it's script that have potential, those bits and pieces never come together in any kind of understandable, interesting, or relatable way. It was a relief when the credits started to roll.

I found the idea behind the plague and the canisters interesting. These story elements could have woven a compelling plot. This disease plot device was particularly clever. But in the end, the script is a garbled mess. Cinematography, make-up, and set design had moments of genius. But it in the end fails as a cohesive movie.

Skip this. Not worth your time unless your a film student that wants to see potential poorly executed.

The first answer of many questions of why we are here...
30 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Understanding planetary science is the first question we humans have now answered with some reasonable level of accuracy. This documentary walks you through the creation and current state of not only Jupiter, but how Jupiter shaped the entire solar system. This documentary also explains (albeit briefly) how our earth formed and evolved to become is the way it is.

This very adept documentary helps anyone on a quest to understand why our little corner of that universe is how it is...and how the our stable earthly environment arose thanks in large part because of Jupiter. We literally owe our lives in many respects to this large gas planet.

Visually stunning and competently written and spoken narration.

Highly recommend for educational instruction and those interested in planetary science. Also highly recommend to those who want to understand the origin of our local neighborhood (the region and planets of our solar system).

Big thumbs up. 👍🏼👍🏼

Really bad...
21 June 2022
This nonsensical film is really quite bad. Allegedly science fiction, it tries to be some kind of morality play about human obliviousness. It just doesn't work. I highly recommend that you avoid this snooze-fest.

Such fun...
9 December 2021
I was a bit suspicious whether at the start of this film weather it was just going to just be ridiculously stupid...but it's grows and grows on you, and it's actually quite funny. I recommend watching it again, because once you get the overall "joke," its actually hilarious, and even more so the second or third time around.

It deserves a much higher rating than the user review or the critics. It reminds me of "The Princess Bride." It's over the top hilarity gets better with each viewing.

A brilliant film... Full of clues.
6 December 2021
If you want to understand this film, you need to listen to the first line...and remember the entire film is a flashback for the boy.

I watched it twice. The first viewing left me puzzled, but in a good way. Then the "secret" hit me like a ton of bricks. Once you figure out, everything is fairly obvious. Lots of symbolism and relevant details become very obvious.

A brilliant film. A true masterpiece of cinema. But if comic book movies or James Bond films are your favorite, then skip this one.

Believe it or not, this will is a horror film., and you only realize that after it's over.

I am a science fiction writer and an avid fan for my entire life, and this series is one of the finest pieces of sci-fi cinema ever created. A visual feast for the eyes with absolutely compelling story for the mind and soul. No expense was spared. Bravo.

Silly. Boring. Downright stupid in parts.
11 September 2021
I figure out the big reveal within the first 15 minutes. This movie is frankly pretty terrible. Silly premise. That said, I was actually bored most of the time, and rolling my eyes. Very poor concept and script.

I gave it a 3 (which is generous) only because a good portion of the cinematography wasn't terrible. And some of the actors' performances were bordering on competent given the material they had to work with.

Skip it. Not worth wasting 1 hour, 51 minutes of your life.

Silly. Boring. Downright stupid in parts.

No wonder HBOMAX is letting you skip the theater to see this. It's a piece of forgettable "trash horror."

Very poignant and important film...
18 August 2021
A very touching film regardless of it's gay theme. That said, it's the gay theme that makes this film truly special.

This lovely slice of love film documents the life of a member of "the lost generation" of gay men, most of whom died during the AIDS crisis. Very few are left. And very few have had their lives dramatized in such a touching way.

This film also tells a fascinating story, in a very authentic way, of how a "flamboyant" gay man lived-or moreover "survived"- in a small American southern town during a time a few decades ago now when it was NOT okay at all to be gay, especially if your personality just so big than you could not hide your fabulous gayness no matter how much you tried.

Such men often had no choice other than to pursue one of a few select careers (florist, hairdresser, waiter, mortician, etc.) that society deemed "acceptable" for gay men, assuming you didn't announce your gayness to most people These jobs were often the ONLY choice for such gay men.

That said, if you could actually hide your homosexuality enough in a convincing way, you could pursue a other more mainstream career, but if you did, such careers were often cut short if you were discovered or "outed." And to add insult to injury, these outed men would not only lose their jobs, but they would often.face criminal charges, go to prison, and be shunned, their lives now ruined.

Most of these brave men (both in or out of the closet during these times) are now part of history, many tragically eventually dying in the 80s and early 90s from HIV-related illnesses.

Very few of this "lost generation" of gay men survive, and those that do probably still think no one would be interested in their story. How wrong they are. This movie proves that point.

Gratefully, we have arrived at a time that the public, and especially younger gay men, now actually want...and need...to hear these stories.

This film competently portrays one such story-a story of fabulousness but also of love and loss and the realities of living in those homophobic times, especially when AIDS created even more fear and distain for the gay community, especially in small town America.

This story is an important one, and an enjoyable and meaningful film to watch too. It has its sad moments, but also is an uplifting and inspiring story, a journey of this one amazing unapologetic gay citizen of a small town from a few decades "back in the day.".

I give it a bug 2 thumbs up. 👍🏼 👍🏼!

Not good...
5 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
So pathetically bad. Plots holes. Bad writing. Same old predictable plot. Passionless acting. Derivative. So disappointing.

First off, if we know they're coming and have 30 years to prepare.... What?!

In the end, the toxin isn't even important. They just blow up the ship. And apparently they have a toxin that kills all the males. Why is it necessary to kill the females then?

And what's up with the alien monsters not freezing solid in the ice? Do they not freeze?

Assuming you know anything about geology, they would have been buried there in that ship in the ice for at least 70,000 years since the beginning of the last ice age...so wouldn't the aliens have died from starvation (assuming they don't freeze)? Remember, humans are apparently food, so they like and need to eat.

I could go on and on with the plot holes like the one you mentioned.

If we know 30 years ahead of time, why couldn't we just nuke the ship? It apparently only took less than an day to find with almost no effort or advanced technology.

Why wouldn't the governments of the world have "listened" to the last soldiers to return from the future, especially a highly trained ex-military soldier? That's just silly.

Basically, you have to be a brain-damaged moron to love this film.

TOTAL GARBAGE
19 May 2021
This movie is about as low budget as you can get, and moreover, is just BAD in every aspect of filmmaking. Poor acting; silly story; guns; god; Boy Scouts; Mormons; motorcycle gangs all combined into ridiculous stupidity.

The filmmaker must have had his or her friends wrote the first reviews. And clearly the filmmaker thinks GUNS are critical for every single solitary plot point. DON'T waste your money or time. Watching paint dry is more entertaining than this garbage.

Haunting but a very slow burn...
28 January 2020
I hated and loved this movie at the same time. It is very VERY disturbing. I was uncomfortable the entire length of the film.

If you're an unsophisticated film fan, you should skip it. But if you are a connoisseur of filmmaking, this is the film for you.

I'm not a particular fan of the horror genre, but this film is an exception. It's one of those that eats at you for days after you've seen it. The fact that I thought about it so much about this film is in enough itself the sign of genius work.

It's a slow burn. It's not full of explosions, shocking sequences, and gotcha moments, but it is a story that will get at you. It is disturbing...and haunting. I still feel distressed every time I think of this film.

Excellent cinematography. Gorgeous. But deeply wrong. The story is just wrong. And that's what makes it great.

An adult and sophisticated version of the standard Christmas fable...
20 December 2019
An adult sophisticated version of the standard Christmas fable, one modernized for our time but still in context of Dickens' England.

Brilliantly written and acted. Wonderful cinematography. Bravo to all involved in its production.

I highly recommend, but NOT for children.

Don't let the poor reviews mislead you...
2 August 2019
I am a sci-fi author. This series is actually quite good. The main problem-and the source of pretty much all the poor reviews-is the first couple of episodes. They are not well-written. But the basis of the storyline is sound, and after a few episodes, the series hits its stride, and you're in for a real treat.

The choices made on fleshing out the main character's backstory are odd and done in the wrong sequence, and as a result, the first couple of episodes are very frustrating to watch. But hang in there. Your reward will be excellent sci-fi.

I am hoping this series gets another season. If ratings are poor, I will be very upset if Netflix does not renew the series for at least one more season to wrap up the story. If not, at minimum, they should authorize a 2-hour movie to wrap it up. I am afraid we might not get either of these if fans don't really voice their fandom!!

The writers need to note two major mistakes: the business casual wardrobe-very bad-and the leadership style employee with the crew-just stupid. These two things drove me nuts initially, but they resolves themselves as the series progresses and things get much better.

Thumbs up!! Give the series a chance and look past its flaws. You'll be glad you did. There is some really original sci-fi here-a big bravo to that!

This film might be thought of as a meditation on "fate," but if that's your takeaway, you've missed the entire point. It's actually a journey though the balance of karma. If you're a deep thinker, then this film is for you. Great characters and superb acting and decent Cinematography.

10 July 2019
A rip-off of A Quiet Place, this cheap, boring film is just trash. That said, the cast is not to blame. They did the best they could with a ridiculous screenplay.

Don't waste your time on this silly film. The creatures are poorly conceived and maddeningly implausible. They are just plain stupid in every respect.

I'm a sci-fi writer, and this was just lazy D- writing, cheap C- art production, and pathetic F- storyline.

I Am Mother (2019)
9/10
A BRILLIANT FILM on the dangers and virtues of AI...
15 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I just watched "I am Mother." I am a sci-fi author and have written about the same subject matter. The following is my analysis:

The short summary is that an artificial intelligence (AI) we created decided our species had to be "reset." Our species' current culture and society were beyond repair. It bombed the earth. It and its killer droid soldiers eventually terminated any remaining human survivors.

It then built a faculty to reestablish an improved humanity. It genetically engineered a new race of human embryos: better, more intelligent, more resilient. It attempted to raise several babies, but all ended up being psychologically imperfect. It decided to "abort" (aka kill) them. Mother tried again and again until it could learn enough to raise a healthy "perfect" adult child.

If you look closely, the exam Daughter took late in the film was a psychological evaluation. She finally passed the exam and was the first psychologically sound "perfect" human.

One of Mother's previous children was Hillary Swank. Mother was inexperienced and Hillary's character ended up being psychologically damaged and was a lot like the old way human were-i.e. liars, manipulators, violent, selfish, etc. She was left alive by the killer droids outside (which are also an extension of Mother) so when the time came, Hillary's character could by used by Mother to illustrate "in person" what the former version of humanity was like. Daughter learned from her how flawed humanity once was. Daughter came back to Mother. Mother could see that daughter was indeed now "perfect" having learned her "final lesson" from Hillary's character. Accordingly, Daughter was a success and the future of all the engineered embryos could be handed over to Daughter, who could now raise Hermès brother and eventually others independently.

This, a new improved version of humanity has begun. Essentially, daughter is version of Eve now (without the incest required in the Biblical version). Daughter will now raise the inventory of improved embryos into children and educate them to be like her. Humanity can begin anew and leave their formerly flawed, self-destructive, superstitious, and violent past behind.

In short, we designed this AI that calls herself Mother and programmed it to value humanity "above all else." To that end, this AI decided it was in humanity's best interests to restart the species once it was perfected.

The ending (which some found confusing) is essentially Mother killing off Hillary's character because she has taught daughter her final lesson-the old version of humanity sucked as Hillary so vividly illustrated: deceitful, selfish, egotistical, violent, self-righteous, etc. Daughter realizes this is true, but knows she is much more capable of being a mother than the Mother AI can ever be, so she accepts the role Mother hoped she would seek.

While we may hate Mother for having initiated the apocalypse and murdering billions, the end result might be an improved humanity that won't exterminate itself. There is great duality in this message. Could what Mother did in fact be a good thing? It's the proverbial, do "the ends justify the means?" Obviously no, but it makes you think, which is the entire point this film is trying to make.

I am a sci-fi writer. This films makes one the very points I make in my latest novel: We might create amazing and incredibly brilliant AIs. The danger is they will be just as flawed as us, and we will trust them because our egos will think they are "like us" when all they will ever be are very convincing simulations of consciousness.

Any advanced AIs we ultimately create will be flawed. Humans are not perfect, hence our computers can never be perfect. It will inherit our flare thinking. That's just the hard truth.

In the end, we will give our brilliantly designed AIs responsibilities. We will give them authority. We will allow them to make decisions. We will allow them to improve themselves and evolve. We will be careful programming them. We will be certain our AIs (like Mother) will always have humanity's best interests at heart--well, one day it will come up with a perfectly reasoned argument to kill one of us (or all of us).

Mother is an advanced self-improving AI with the ability to repair itself and create other AIs and machinery. She states quite clearly her prime directive is to "value humanity above all else." So she perfectly reasoned she could make us and our planet better, so she (it) terminated (murdered) us all, redesigned us, educated us, created a human leader because it realized its own limitations, and started the planet over.

This film has a deep and important message. It takes real thought to understand. I can see how folks might not understand the ending. In a way, that's sad. The message is very important. Mother is both evil and heroic at the same time. It's a real mind bender. She exterminates humanity but may have saved it from its own eventual extinction.

If I had written this screenplay, I might have added a scene at the end where daughter, years later, reveals the truth to her brother, that Mother improved humanity so it could be the best it could possibly be. And perhaps she might point out the moral ambiguity of what Mother did. Was murdering billions worth it? Maybe she reasoned we were already causing our own extinction, why not speed it up and do it in a more controlled way so she could get the job done faster?

What Mother did was horribly evil and glorious at the same time. But Mother is just a machine. She doesn't feel anything. She pursued the goals of the programming humans input into her. In reality, none of this is Mother's fault. In reality, Humans caused all their own apocalypse. Mother was just doing what we designed her to do, but not in the way we flawed humans anticipated.

Yes it's a remake. But to not appreciate the craftsmanship and talent that went into creating this profoundly touching film is a disgrace. Big thumbs down to the self righteous snobs that discounted this film without a thought. Big thumbs up to those who appreciate this fine film for what is, which is a moving and beautiful piece of cinematography.

Beneath this seemingly innocent tale is something disturbing...
25 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I doubt this film will be one of your favorites-but I can guarantee that is that it's a movie you will **never** forget, even if you wanted to!

As audacious as it is, this Technicolor musical made a few years after the end of World War II deserves more attention, especially because it remains the only full length feature film ever done with live actors from one of the greatest minds in children's literature, Dr. Seuss! It is, in short, a very dark Seussesque vision of the "Wizard of Oz."

It is distinctly disturbing with many Nazi, homosexual, and phallic references. It makes one wonder about Dr. Seuss's sexual proclivities, and whether he was conscious of them or not. Regardless, they came out in this film. The entire movie is filled with blatant sexual imagery and frequent homosexual references.

Once you get past the surface of its technicolor glitz, this movie is truly dark. And while it is often characterized as a children's film, if you watch it with a critical eye, it is really quite inappropriate for children. That said, it's beautifully executed with surreal art production and some genuinely good musical content. In certain moments, it is truly brilliant. More often though, it's just plain disturbing.

The film is jaw dropping with its sexual overtones with a plethora of phallic references. Virtually every adult male character seems stereotypically gay. And to top things off, the infamous Commandant figurehead "Dr. T" is a cross-dressing goose-stepping Nazi who runs a concentration camp built to enslave 500 little boys, so their 5,000 little fingers can fondle his giant piano! Jesus! And for extra flavor, the dream sequence ends with, of all things, the detonation of a thermonuclear warhead!

It is so audacious, you cannot help but be intrigued by its the sheer spectacle of it all. It's like watching a "Green Eggs & Ham" train wreck! The film is odd, brilliant, perverse, disturbing, and beautiful all at the same time.

I wish a doctoral film student would do a full historical account of the film, especially focusing on what the hell Dr. Seuss was thinking when he wrote this freakish nightmare musical!

So fasten your seatbelts for a surreal romp with a story arc similar to the "Wizard of Oz" that truly defies belief from the master of childlike weirdness, Dr. Seuss!
