An American in Austen (2024 TV Movie)

Not what I expected...
11 April 2024
To be fair, I am a Jane Austen purist. Which means that I'm probably way pickier about the way her work is presented than 90% of the people who will watch this movie.

I thought the romance between Harriet and her romantic interest was really sweet, and that's literally the reason this gets so high of a rating.

However, I had a ton of issues with the PnP side of the movie. I thought at first that Harriet was going to end up with Darcy, and I couldn't stand that. I almost quit the movie until I realized that wasn't going to happen :) All the characters in Austen's world were very flat, which I thought was a really interesting storytelling choice because it really made you focus on Harriet, who seemed so alive, even in a large crowd of people. However, the book characters are anything but their actual counterpart.

Mr Bennet: instead of a sardonic man, we see a loving father invested in his daughter's marriage.

Mrs. Bennet: Far from being a silly woman, she rather expressed eloquently why it is so important to get her daughters married off. What??

Jane: Jane was bolder than she should have been, but all around she and the Bingleys were the only people who felt in character.

Lizzy: I am really sorry, because I wanted to love this Lizzy so much. But she came across as abrasive and a little mean. Lizzy's wit is not harsh, in fact most of PnP she's laughing at the other characters and they don't even know it. She doesn't mock them. She's not derisive, she's amused by her family's antics. Plus, she is so consumed with preventing Lydia from running off that she would never in a million years consider doing it herself.

Mary: Not much to say, but where are the religious anecdotes? Where is the proud, modest girl? She just seems like one of the rest of them, and that's not Mary.

Kitty: Pretty good rendition of Kitty. There's not much you can do with her character.

Lydia: She was okay, but not forward enough. Lydia is loud and showy, but this girl never pushed herself out in front to get attention like the book-Lydia would do.

Darcy: What isn't wrong with him? I tried so hard to like him, but they messed up his insult to Lizzy (how could they do that!?) and then proceeded to make him do so many out of character things that I stopped liking him about halfway through the movie. In fact, at one point, he corners a young lady in a garden, telling her he loves her, and tries to kiss her, all after meeting her like twice. What????? Darcy is THE epitome of gentlemanliness (well, mostly. Knightley from Emma is better lol) This is so out of character it's baffling to me.

Bingley and Caroline: Pretty good. Honestly, one of the better portrayals I've seen of Bingley. Caroline was, well, Caroline.

Wickham: The point of running away with Lydia and lying to Elizabeth was to hurt Darcy, because he loved Lizzy, and since that didn't happen, there was little to no explanation for why he did what he did.

There were other small things, like the lack of gloves or forgettable side plots that I didn't like.

I enjoyed this movie, but it wasn't really Pride and Prejudice. However, it was a really fun movie and Eliza Bennett carried the whole thing for me. I really love her performances, and that's ultimately why I liked this.

Excellent adaptation!
19 February 2024
First off: I was a fan of the books before going into this. I know a lot of book fans were angry about the casting for Annabeth, but honestly she is fantastic! If people are complaining, it's because the expectations they set up for themselves were way too high and therefore they are disappointed in themselves and not the show. Leah is a great Annabeth, and I'm really happy she got the part :) Second, this is both a wonderful adaptation and a great show! The pacing works really well, and I love all the extra details we get from other characters like Sally and Grover. Because Percy was the narrator in the books, I'm so happy to see their story. The plot is good- there were probably some things they needed to make clearer to new people watching. For instance, I think they needed to talk sooner about how in PJ the gods can't steal each other's magical items. My parents (who hadn't read the book but were enjoying the show) were really confused at why Zeus was so sure Percy had stolen the bolt if Zeus was sure Hades had it. Why didn't he just suspect Hades? Because I had read the books, I could explain it to them. That's not a spoiler, you figure that out at the beginning :) Great show, I went in with high expectations and was blown away. Fantastic acting from our main three, and the side characters are so perfectly casted! Especially Poseidon and Ares, though Lin Manuel Miranda does shine as Hermes.

Hope this helps!

So underrated
19 February 2024
The bad reviews of this are entirely wrong! This is one of my absolute favorite movies, and it makes me sad to see it so lowly rated. As far as play to screen it does an excellent job of making it seem like a hybrid. It has wide shots of the woods that show it as a movie, and then you have moments like Last Midnight or the wolf's howl that remind you of what it was based off of. Fantastic singing throughout, I especially loved Cinderella's song On the Steps of the Palace, which I believe was written for this movie. Don't listen to the other reviews! If you love musicals, this is 100% worth your time (unlike some other movie musical adaptations like, I'm sorry to say, Dear Evan Hansen). I've seen this at least 10 times and it never fails to disappoint. Even if it didn't have such low ratings, I would give it a 10 out of 10.

Actually loved it
3 December 2023
So, the reason I rate this so highly is because it's really hard to pull off a movie or even a book with so many different characters and it actually flow well. Nova and Jesse are the main characters, sure, but we also get a lot of action from other characters such as Lucas or Lloyd, even the terrible Tyler. This switching isn't annoying like I thought it'd be. You kind of like the characters so much that you're happy to see them once in a while. I felt this was really accurate for Lloyd. Loved his character, and so I was glad to see him for a few scenes, but his story of just finding a date was a little lame. But the smaller plotlines let the bigger one shine and support them.

It spells out pretty honestly the fears kids have in high school and explains the kid's motives really well. It might have been a little cheesy, but the acting is actually better than a lot of other Disney channel movies (sorry, but Descendants included. I loved the movies but the acting was only ok). This was surprisingly refreshing. I don't know why people rate it so low... I think it absolutely deserves a chance.

(Can I just say the scene where Nova is trying on prom dresses is so cute! I never went to prom in high school but this made me wish I would've.)

Adore the book, then watched the show
3 December 2023
So... I happened upon my mom watching this and became so invested that I read the book, then rewatched the show. It's one of the greatest mysteries in classic literature, and this miniseries does it total justice. The actor for Sergeant Cuff does a phenomenal job, and I loved how they incorporated Betteridge's obsession with Robinson Crusoe. The acting is awesome (especially Rosanna, Miss Clack, and Franklin). I find Rachel's character a little undeveloped but that's ok. She's not really the star anyway. A lot of people might say it's too long, but I didn't find it that way. To be honest, I've seen it over three times all the way through (I binge it every time) and it's never felt like it drags on. I always say the book is better, but this is a great adaptation and I like it almost as much as the book itself. Wilkie Collins was a genius. Completely worth the watch!
