Jane Eyre (1996)
Rush on
I agree with one of the other comment writers about good story & good actors but mismatched, and I would also say rushed. It has been about 24years since I read the book as it was in school. But I felt that you would need to know the story of Jane Eyre when watching this one as bits are left out & therefore it doesn't fully make sense. For example Jane & Mr Rochester have hardly spoken & suddenly he is proposing marriage!!! The actors don't have time to let the audience know how their character feels about each thing happening in the story. The actors are good but aren't given enough time to do this story justice. I'm sorry to say it but I didn't really enjoy this version. The 1970 version with Susanna York & George C Scott would be the Jane Eyre movie of my preference BUT you should check out the 1983 BBC mini series version with Zelah Clarke & Timothy Dalton in the 2 main roles. I love it so much I watch it regularly. There is an abridged version which goes for 225mins or the full version for 330mins.
Rhinestone (1984)
Dolly punches the pain
this is a cute light-hearted comedy and quite a giggle to see Sly partnered with Dolly for a duet or two.We see Sly as a New York cabby who needs to pay for the damages to his cab (which he blames Dolly for as he was distracted by perving at her)she in turn wants to win a bet to turn 'the next ordinary guy' into a singer who can pass the 'rhinestone' crowd of hecklers, so she can rip up her contract with her sleazy boss and wont need to sing at the rhinestone nightclub any longer. So Dolly takes Sly back home to Tennesee and teaches him some country so he can sing right for the rhinestone crowd. Of course Sly is obviously a fish out of water and picked on by a few country bullies including Dolly's ex, who isn't over her. If this sounds like you might like it you probably will.
Torch Song (1993)
Drinking to excess can ruin rep
Light hearted drama about a lush/alcoholic actress played by Raquel Welsh & her trials & tribulations with her daughter played by a young Alicia Silverstone and her assistant played by a self serving Laura Innes. Jack Scalia plays the hero, an alcoholic fireman, who meets Raquel's character at a rehab clinic. Romance ensues naturally & his attitude due to not being from tinsel town brings Raquel's character down to earth & helps motivate her to stay sobered up & look at her relationships around her.Pleasantly entertaining. Not as long as Judith Krantz's others but if you like this you'll like them & visa versa...hopefully will come out on DVD soon as my bought copy VHS is wearing out.
The Assignment (1997)
Brilliant new take
If you liked the Richard Chamberlain version of the Bourne Identity then you will like this too...Aiden Quinn does this one brilliantly, you can't help but wonder if he is really out there...I reckon he and the other main cast members probably had nightmares for weeks after doing this movie as it's so intense. When I first saw it I was just flicking channels on the remote late one evening..& I got hooked within minutes. look up www.answers.com for Ilich Ramírez Sánchez who is the character that "carlos the Jackal" is based on for both... I remember reading about Ilich Ramírez Sánchez's arrest in the paper in 1997. It was front page for weeks, through the trial after his arrest.
Mr. Bones (2001)
Forget it
Don't waste the electricity to run this one. Crude humour all through..on..& on..& on. Just when you think they have stopped another splurts. I only continued to watch as a friend said it was good. I think it's the last time I will trust her.
Fiddler on the Roof (1971)
Magnificent production, with true to life characters
I don't agree with johnm_001's comments. I have seen the live production including Topol in the lead, numerous times over the years & love it. BUT a live production is always different and more lively compared to a movie, as you are there. There isn't any distractions etc. So you get enveloped into it like you are there and part of it. It is a lot harder to do that with watching a video of it at home. Also I wouldn't say this is a comedy. It is a musical drama. And I give it 10 out of 10. I own the video, & bought it as soon as it became available. Prior to purchasing it, I watched it every time it came on TV. It is a brilliant production, the set is well done, showing a poor tired village who is regularly being harassed by their non-Jewish counterparts in Czarist Russia. When you consider the story, this can't be a comedy. If it was as bad as johnm_001 states, why was it nominated for so many awards?
Beauty and the Beast (1996)
Doug is better than Stan
Stan was too self absorbed. Doug is less rude & I watch it more now that Stan is gone. I realize that the man in the show is supposed to be a beast but Doug is more diplomatic/humorous to the wider audience. People who write in to the show don't need a self absorbed chauvinistic pig answering and directing the beauties to answer their heart felt questions. Doug is better.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)
Great stuff
First off I haven't read the book. I enjoyed the movie thoroughly. Many subtle things in background which you may not notice when watching for the first time. Knowing that there is to be more movie's in this series lets me understand that certain parts have to go slow/drawn out to explain background info & other parts later on. So make sure you are in a comfortable chair when watching.
