Paint by numbers low-budget sci-fi mystery straight out of an Outer Limits episode, but with a poorly executed twist.
It reminds me a lot of Director and Writer's previous work, The Beyond, in terms of writing and visual style, but with a worse budget. I think it was a step backward from the B-rate The Beyond in storytelling, graphics, and overall writing.
It's great to see Katee Sackhoff as the lead, but she can't carry the movie without better writing and directing especially regarding her interaction between other characters including the AI. She's a fantastic actor, and Riddick or Battlestar Galactica would be better examples of her work. I didn't find her actions or emotional responses at times in the movie to be believable or natural in the moment. I can't go into detail without spoilers, so I'll leave it at that.
This movie adds nothing new to the sci-fi genre, and will provide some entertainment and anticipation until it makes a hard left, then turns upside down and inside out leaving you wondering who signed off on those unearned twists and took things to a place where it could have gone smoother if the writing had foreshadowed or at least built up to earning them better.
Imagine if A Small World at Disney ended with a set of class 5 rapids -- that's how rocky, disjointed, and unexpected the last quarter of the movie gets.
