Taanakkaran (2022)
Could have been a masterpiece
Technically the movie is decent made, the cinematography looks stunning in some places but then the dubbing and audio seemed to be a bit off at times, The background music has worked well in elevating the scenes and captivating emotions.
Every actor seems to have played their role well except Vikram Prabhu, He barely even speaks throughout the movie, mostly just silent reactions which would look classy at times but the same pattern is repeated throughout the movie. As usual the female actors has no significant impact and could have been completely removed. The movie ends with a great message which deserves the time spent on watching this movie.
Veedu (1988)
A hidden gem in tamil cinema
I just started watching Balu Mahendra movies, this is the second one of his and i was immediately so involved with the story and blown away by the ABSOLUTELY AMAZING CINEMATOGRAPHY, all the shots are well thought of and composed in a amazing way that follows all the typical rules of framing the shots, yet it is so well done it captivates the story.
The story felt a bit shallow and didn't cover that many aspects of building a house and the ending is just a cliff hanger, The story follows a lower middle class working women which is portrayed excellent by the actress and her grandfather role which is very touching, when the old man dies after visiting the building it made me cry. The music is absolutely fantastic which is recognisable by anyone, there are no songs and only some places has those bgm even which are kind of repeating but still a very enjoyable one. The way of story telling is so admirable: typically when someone travels through bus they don't show a lot, but Balu Mahendra shows the entire trip where the old man takes a bus, stands for a while, a girl gives seat to her, bus stops some where and the girl sitting in next seat drops off, the old man carries on to have a little nap once the destination is reached the conductor shouts at him to drop off, he forgets the umbrella. Which is a recurring theme in this movie, simple things are shown great care and loved every single frame of it.
Captain Miller (2024)
What an absolute waste of time and money
Right off the bat I wanna get one thing out about cinematography, the first 20 to 30 minutes camera was too shaky it almost made me puke, even my friend who doesn't care anything about cinematography immediately was annoyed by it, thank god it didn't last that long. A little bit movement like sitcom style during action scenes might make sense, but it's done too much here.
Then coming to story it's easily predictable where a lower caste fights upper caste as well as the British. The movie is so easily predictable where everyone guessed Shivanna will give an entry in climax, people in force back stabbed the police forces. Maybe it's intentional but fully removes the surprise element of the movie.
Now coming to the positive points the background score and music is absolutely fantastic, The opening bg score elevated the intro so much and set some great expectations from the movie, some minor scenes also had its own scoring which I absolutely loved. It slightly reminded me of Aayirathil oruvan
Most of the actors performed good and nothing to complaint, the costumes were sometimes ridiculous but nothing too off putting.
It's ridiculous how the main character of movie who is killing hundreds of people who at least dodged 1000s of bullets doesn't get shot except for the one time where he steals someone's bike. Seriously 700 police men shooting one guy in an open field and not even a single bullet even scratches him. I know it's just a movie and were supposed to not care about these stuff but with recent movies like SISU this just pales in comparison.
Overall it's one time watchable and that too for the bg music.
The Usual Suspects (1995)
Mind blowing
The movie begins with a pace that is deliberately slow, setting the stage for a narrative that is deeply immersive and intricate. This initial slowness is not without purpose; it methodically constructs a world that is both believable and absorbing. The plot, crafted with finesse and attention to detail, weaves through the lives of its characters, each portrayed with a depth that contributes to the overall tapestry of the story.
As the film progresses, the plot thickens, maintaining a balance of subtlety and complexity that is rare in modern cinema. The characters are developed with a careful, thoughtful approach, allowing the audience to form a genuine connection with them. Their flaws and strengths are revealed in a manner that is both organic and compelling, adding layers to the narrative that enrich the viewing experience.
The dialogue in the film is another element that stands out. Each line is delivered with precision, carrying weight and significance. The conversations between characters are not just exchanges of words; they are pivotal moments that drive the plot forward, often leaving the audience with a lingering sense of awe. The scriptwriters have done an exceptional job in crafting dialogues that resonate with viewers, making them feel the emotions conveyed by the characters.
Complementing the powerful dialogue is the film's soundtrack. It is a masterful blend of intensity and subtlety, enhancing the mood of each scene without overpowering it. The music shifts seamlessly from being heart-poundingly intense in moments of climax to tender and mild during more introspective scenes. This dynamic range in the soundtrack adds an extra layer of emotional depth to the film, making the viewing experience more immersive.
The movie truly shines in its cinematography and screenplay. The cinematographer has a keen eye for detail, capturing each scene with a perspective that is both unique and captivating. The use of lighting, the framing of shots, and the movement of the camera all contribute to a visual storytelling that is nothing short of artistic brilliance. The screenplay complements this by ensuring that the flow of scenes is smooth and coherent, guiding the audience through the narrative with ease and sophistication.
Acting in the film is another aspect that deserves high praise. The performances are not just convincing; they are riveting. Each actor brings their character to life with a realism that transcends the screen. The emotions portrayed are palpable, the expressions nuanced, and the body language telling. The cast's ability to convey the complexities of their characters adds a level of authenticity to the film that is both rare and admirable.
As the movie draws towards its conclusion, the audience is taken on an unexpected turn. This twist is not just a shock for the sake of it; it is a well-crafted culmination of the plot that has been building up throughout the film. It challenges the viewer's perceptions and expectations, leaving them with a sense of astonishment and reflection.
In summary, this film is a cinematic gem that stands out for its meticulous plot, powerful dialogue, emotionally charged soundtrack, breathtaking cinematography, seamless screenplay, and compelling acting. It is a movie that not only entertains but also engages the mind and touches the heart. It's a cinematic journey that starts off slow but builds up to a mind-blowing conclusion, leaving the audience with an unforgettable experience. In the landscape of modern cinema, it is undoubtedly one of the best, a masterpiece that resonates with viewers long after the credits roll.
