Meh
1 May 2009
My excitement slowly waned as the movie went on. Where was the tension? The mystery? Liev Schrieber was fantastic as Vincent/Sabertooth, Hugh Jackman was his usual good as Wolverine, but the rest of the characters just didn't seem to develop. I felt no connection to any of the mutants, nor could i muster much of an impulse to root for anyone's success. The tension between the members of Stryler's team made no sense. A little back-story to that would have been nice. I would have loved to have seen Gambit as a more integral part of the plot. He is, by far, my favorite mutant. Stryker was a disappointment. Perhaps it is hard to follow where Brian Cox has already trod? Ryan Reynolds was wasted on Deadpool. Why use such a strong and recognizable actor in such a minor roll? Yeah, it was fun, had a few chuckles. But, in the end, it was just another action movie that fails to live up to its trailer.

Watched it. Won't make that mistake twice.
20 April 2009
Wow. It was like watching an animated version a really bad SNL skit. One that should have been retired years before. There was no energy, none. I think they were going for shock humor but they must have hired priests for their writers. Every joke, EVERY JOKE missed the mark, failed to shock or simply lay there and twitched feebly.

Dull, disjointed, dumb and destined, surely, for a very long run. If it fails on Fox, I'm sure NBC can pick it up to fill the spot where 'Life' use to be.

In all honesty, I'm not sure how this thing even got past the first meeting with the network. There is nothing of even the slightest redeeming value here. Perfect execution (which wasn't apparent here) could not have saved this thing. From the concept up it is just bad, bad, bad.

Hurrah, Fox.... whoever picked this up was probably the same person who axed 'Dollhouse'..... and 'Firefly'.... and 'Family Guy' TWICE!... Futurama.... and on and on and on........

Storytelling Hollywood hasn't seen in ages
9 October 2005
I finally got out to see Serenity. I was a fan of Firefly during it's brief stay on Fox and have been anticipating this movie since I first found news of it on this very site. I was saddened to see such a small crowd and the teeny screen the theater allocated to this fantastic movie.

The writing was perfect with twists that come on suddenly and with complete surprise. Joss Whedon's only loyalty is to the continuity and believability of his story and it shows.

This is a dark tale told with humor and no small amount of skill.

Thank you, Mr. Whedon, for a wonderful ride. I have two more tickets for the next two rumored trips.

Dialogue, George... it's called dialogue
13 June 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Question.... why does Obi Wan sound, at times, like a effete Englishman? More important question... why oh why won't Lucas let someone write the dialogue?! Third question.... did anyone else feel underwhelmed by the cheesy explosions and overall feel of the opening sequence? I LOVED Star Wars... and each film since Empire has disappointed. I will grant that Sith managed to disappoint me less than the previous 2 but it still was far short of spectacular.

Lucas provided an amazing vision and a deeper mythology than one can expect from Hollywood, but he is a dreadful writer and a worse director. I can only hope that he will be releasing some control for the rumored television shows.

Do you go see it? Yeah... it's a piece of history, but don't let the trailer fool you into thinking you are finally going to be satisfied.

A guilty pleasure
20 August 2002
Picture this.... a room that is full of people and only one of them has any redeeming values whatsoever but that person is patently unlikable. If this sounds like it might be a fun story, you're right. I enjoyed this movie on the simplest and most shallow level. It's no great spellbinder, there is no big surprise, but it moves along nicely and had be laughing out loud on a consistent basis. The performances were good with each character convincingly revolting. This movie is on my "Own It" list. Not because it is a masterpiece but because it managed to entertain me its entire length. I recommend this guilty pleasure to anyone who isn't too wrapped up in pretending they are a movie critic for PBS.

Penn shows a gentle touch in this beautifully shot film.
12 May 2002
I was captivated from the opening shot and remained entranced until the tragic end. I was surprised by the deftness of Penn's direction. His touch was gentle and near perfect. There is a mixture of beautiful panoramas and eye-catching angles that manage to meld together quite nicely. All of the performances were well above par and what a level par is with such an august cast. It's tempting to think Penn called in many markers to get some very big names to do such small parts but I prefer to think it was the high quality of the script that brought in Micky Rourke and Harry Dean Stanton and Benicio Del Toro to accept as little as 5 minutes of screen time for this film. Penn did an incredible job and this film goes into my all time top 20 list.
