Always the episode you skip when watching re-runs
27 May 2023
Speaking as a long term trek fan (I've been enjoying trek since 1968), well this was the one of those, I had been loving this version of trek until now, oh dear. There are always a few awful episodes that I always skip when I watch Rerun's of all the trek series . The captain Proton ones on voyager, ugh, or that foul Irish village Fairhaven, or Dixon Hill private dick. Sure I get it, the writers get bored doing 100s of episodes the same and want a change, or want a go at a different genre, at least they haven't done a full blown musical like they did in Buffy, that was monstrous. Some of those weren't too badly acted though, this one stank, just too early on for characters to be established before spoofing them up , I put this along side the early Ds9 episode with that game Cisco and co get caught , "alla-morain 123" "2nd shap, move along" that was just nasty!

I know some trek fans like these episodes, they are quaint I suppose, but I watch trek for a sci-fi space experience not comedy, film noir or as in this case a cheap children's silly spoof. I don't mind a touch of comedy or whatever, but a whole episode, badly done, no thanks

Ah well get it over with early I suppose , foul, just foul, moving on, the rest of the series is pretty ace.

The Book of Boba Fett (2021–2022)

The Star Wars franchise is cursed

Exactly the same awful casting and wooden acting from the lead character as with both Anekin characters in the movies 4 5 and 6.

Boba has no presence whatsoever , I gave up after 2 episodes, just awful.

Midsommar (2019)

Haunting, beautiful, disturbing quality cinema
28 June 2020
I enjoyed Midsommar , it will stay with me for a long time. There is a deep and ancient archetype played out in this movie that is hard to handle for modern domesticated people. It is well expressed and having experienced similar scenarios in my drug taking youth I identified with it, even though I don't fully understand it yet. It has comedy, true horror, weirdness and beauty and is very thought provoking Not for everyone as is evident by the reviews here but you will have to watch it yourself to know if its for you, making these reviews irrelevant I suppose.

War of the Worlds (2019– )

Not war of the worlds and boring to boot
16 February 2020
Why use that title? It has very little to do with the story we all know, if the producers had come up with an original title for this at least they wouldn't be fighting the obvious expectations that using such a famous title has inevitably brought them. If it was just a hook to get people to watch it then it worked, I probably wouldn't have bothered watching it as I am bored of the walking dead style endless season upon season.however that ploy cost them in many disappointed viewers. I hoped the conclusion would be at least satisfying. But no just another hanger to the next season which I will not be watching. I feel cheated and tricked into watching this , if you want war of the worlds this isn't it, the 2019 BBC. Version is far superior as is the Tom cruise movie or even the 60s classic . Unless you want a walking dead style serial that has no relation to H G Wells's story avoid

down more rabbit holes

Most enjoyable well made and informative, whether you are on board with the content or not its definitely worth watching and gives another perspective to our world which is always a healthy exercise. I have to add the one bad review here "Load of Rubbish" is exactly the same as one on Amazon by jason t. and on Vimeo too (I doubt its their real names) word for word, copied and pasted. SO this person who hated the film bought it twice from 2 different platforms just to leave bad reviews on both platforms. I bet the same review is on itunes too but i wont have that on my system so cant check. Seems pretty stupid OR far more likely someone deliberately trolling to put off potential buyers. Its was lazy to use the same words , like copying your mates homework and expecting not to get caught out, their trolling skills are somewhat lacking, as Q often says "these people are stupid" This being the case I wouldn't pay any heed to that review, the production values are good and the content very interesting, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Joker (I) (2019)

I'll have to watch this a few more times
19 November 2019
Amazing performance from Mr Phoenix, my first thought after a few minutes in was Taxi driver, very similar story, darkness and quality, and then surprise surprise, in walks Robert De Niro, (the star of Taxi driver) no coincidence I'm sure. Top quality writing, cinematography and performances. A new classic of cinema

Game of Thrones: The Bells (2019)
Season 8, Episode 5

Whole story ruined by rushed ending & bad script
14 May 2019
Its been said many times on this review page, The producers have taken the easy big CG action rout and abandoned everything that made this series good. The plot doesn't make any sense, characters acting out of character, plot holes everywhere, all to rush to the final ending like a kid finishing his homework in the toilets 10 mins before handing it in. I almost dont want to see the last episode now. Its as if they deliberately want to demoralise people after presenting such brilliant writing , characters and plot in previous seasons to kill it dead with this piss poor fare , Sad and Very disappointing ,

Darkest Hour (2017)

Riveting and delightful performance
25 September 2018
I thoroughly enjoyed the Darkest hour and didn't want it to end, I was both moving and delightful, Oldman give a brilliant and compelling performance and as I hadn't read anything before I watched I couldn't think who he was even though I kind of recognised him until the end titles told me , Many criticisms for historical inaccuracy and this maybe so but this isn't a documentary is a story and it is told extremely well, great casting characterisation , I loved every minute of it

Star Trek: Discovery (2017–2024)

Much better than most these reviews suggest
11 October 2017
Well I read a lot of the reviews here before I watched and as so many are negative they almost put me off watching at all but my son urged me to watch it and make my own judgement I am very glad I did. I have been a Trekkie since the late 60s and I have enjoyed every incarnation of the franchise, this one being no exception. I have now watched 4 episodes and I love it as much as any other Trek, people hated Enterprise but I loved that too and was saddened by its early termination. Yep the Klingons are different, but remember the original series Klingons, so what, great I love them, I have always loved Klingons , so much so that the band I play and sing in occasionally appear in full Klingon costume, and I found the new look very interesting and an enhancement of the Klingon culture. The story line is captivating and the main protagonist Michael Burnham is very watchable. and I can see other characters like Sylvia Tilly, Saru and Paul Stamets becoming loved members of yet another Trek family as in all past shows. Like my son (who was brought up on Trek) I urge you to watch this and let it in to the wonderful and diverse world that is Star Trek.

The BFG (2016)
9/10
lovely movie
23 December 2016
I don't get the bad reviews here, were they watching the same film? or maybe they have lost touch with their inner child. I loved this film and I'm not a kid I'm a 55 year old bloke. The film follows the book faithfully and keeps hold of Roald Dahl's odd humour well. The girl playing Sophie is an excellent Northern British actress who plays the part very well and is well cast, the giant character is funny, magical and full of warmth and charm with the CG very well done. Sure its a kids film but as such it is a very good one, if you want more adult material then don't watch kids films but if you like magical fantasy with humour and great visuals I recommend the BFG wholeheartedly.
