Welkeomtu Samdal-ri (2023)
At a time when Korean media and police have blood on their hands
I lovely warm hearted story of life in a village on Jeju. Sadly the the first episode is a reflection of what has happened this last week to a persecuted man much loved Korean actor (Lee Sun-kyun). Showing a side of Korea we could all do without. Ji Chang-wook and Shin Hye-sun have incredible chemistry that it's hard to imagine another couple in these roles. They come here from action (Healer) and hilarious (Mr. Queen). The supporting roles are all well developed. Kim Mi-kyung as Sam-dal's mother as always is excellent. The connections between the parents and the sisters add another dimension to a well written series. As for Kim Do-eun, a star of the future.
The Bletchley Circle: San Francisco (2018)
African Americans in the fifties?
Someone should tell me just how possible it was for African Americans to be drinking alongside white men and women, Or even in a bar back then. I guess using the same toilets. Hidden Figures was set in the sixties, 'White Only' toilets, clearly barely accepted by white scientists. Vivien Thomas still could not use the main entrance to Johns Hopkins until the late sixties. One of the actors said "double down", pretty sure that is only a recent bit of jargon. Apart from the obvious contradictions it was not even close to the original.
The predictable condescending males were thick on the ground and the second case was absolutely beyond plausible.
