Horrible remake of tamil film Maniratnam's Mouna Raagam
21 March 2024
First of all, this movie shouldn't have been made. The original movie by Majors than was far better than this.

Kasak clearly lacked technical finesse of the original Tamil film. Mouna Raagam had music was composed by Ilaiyaraaja, with lyrics by Vaali. P. C. Sreeram was the cinematographer, and the art director was Thota Tharani. The film was edited by B. Lenin and V. T. Vijayan.

Mouna Ragam was released on 15 August 1986. Despite opening to modest audiences, it became a box-office success, with a theatrical run of over 175 days, and Mani Ratnam's breakthrough. The film received critical acclaim; it won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil, and Ratnam received the Filmfare and Cinema Express Awards for Best Director in Tamil. Mouna Ragam also became a breakthrough in Karthik's career despite his role being a cameo. The film introduced techniques such as soft-focus shots, flare filters and backlighting, which became popular in Tamil cinema.

Its like a film left unreleased in 2003 and released in 2012...
5 November 2023
I got a bittter shock after watching this film, given that its action King Arjun! The film atrociously looks like something out of early 2000s. Did they went back in time or this was released like 10 years later in the wrong time period? If there was a minus rating om IMDB , this film will surely get a -10 , perfect minus rating!

The picture quality, the sound editing, characters is unmistakably Tollywood of early 2000s.. The whole film is a copy of Hollywood film the "Wrong Turn" (2003) which also brings me to believe that it could have been an unreleased film lying on the shelf for 10 years. In those times it was common to remake Hollywood films in India with a local context and the producers would get away with it due to the lack of internet .

If there was anything positive about this film, I would say i admire the guts of the movie makers to make and release a film that is a 10 years late!

Ratchasan with Vettaiyadu Villayadu........
13 October 2023
Though the plot is not something new,the film takes cues from 2018 Ratchasan and 2006 Kamal Hassan film Vettaiyadu Villayadu but with some flaire dialogues which makes the day. The film manage to keep us engaged and immersed in the world that they have created. The conversations between the lead characters not only take the film forward but also make us curious about how two people, with contrasting personalities, are going to crack the case. The screenplay and script has been engaging throughout ...

However the only let down of the film are certain shortcomings in the presentation style . For the most part , the film presents in a smooth but dry narrative fashion , linear camera work and cliqued lighting. The fim could have been better with more action scenes and some elaborate cinematography. The climax feels a bit rushed but overall a watchable film.

Somewhat flawed but better than the last indie outing
1 September 2023
This is a decent installment that provides a nostalgic feel of the first and third movie. The film somewhat like the first and third also some great historical and archeaological discussions regarding the Antikythera machine. What felt less : The action was somewhat linear and had limited screen time with more chase scenes than actual punching and kicks . This time round the film set in 1969 and the authentic portrayal of the time period is commendable. And the film lack the thrilling "sudden twist of events during a heated action" of the first 3 films. The screenplay could have been better while it lacks punch , in the very least the premise of a classic Indie film is put in place here.

The brief appearance of Antonio Banderas was refreshing though and so was the underwater scene ; something we didnt see in previous indie films: time travel element, though it was placed towards the end . Still, it was a fun adventure with all the signature "Indiana Jones" hallmarks of tomb-raiding, Nazi-punching, and chase sequences. It's definitely worth watching for fans both new and old. Indy's last adventure is a mixed bag.

80's World Travelogue, songs are evergreen.
19 August 2023
The only reasons to watch this film is the music of Illayaraja and the overseas locales of Paris France and Germany. The music is ethereal and showcases the creativity of Illayaraja. A particular song called is "Germaniyin" is still being hummed today.

It's no secret that Kamal Hassan is a tremendous performer; in just those years , he has showcased his mettle irrespective of whether he's playing the hero or villain. On the other side, Rathi Agnihotri delivers one of her best performances of her time.

The film has nothing much to offer in terms of story but nevertheless still watchable for it's time.

Second best movie in the series..
30 July 2023
I would rate this as the second best movie in the series as.therr is something in this one which comes as w fresh breath of air.

The setting is 1994. We are brought back to the 90s style of filmaking with this installment with a mixture of transformers and Indiana Jones and the typical cliqued scenario of the nobody in New York struggling out for a living when he gets an option to solve this life and financial problems with aliens robots from outer space . Too simple a 90s premise but works most of the time in this film . Interestingly director Michael Bay is absent in this one and another picks up his earlier vintage style where Bay left off .

Not a bad venture for a prequel considering that I was not satisfied with the sequels that came after the first movie . The action and story flow is congruent with each other without the needless comedy antics of Shia LaBeouf. Instead we treated to some good 90s style corny dialogues and characterisation which doesn't feel out of place.

The robot characterisations are better than previous movies and while retaining the transformer essence and aesthetics, we are introduced to more interesting and well etched out conversations between the humans and robots than previous movies .in this regard the film manages to draw the viewer in.

Worth a watch in the series.and highly recommended..

Generally good but could have had been better in few areas
29 March 2023
A film that shows what is really happening in our society.

Kudos to Director Prabhu Solomon and entire team.for bringing up a sensitive and serious problem of rape in India today.

I won't be saying that it's one of the best movies I happened to watch lately along the lines of Jai Bheem and Ponmagal Vandhal. The screenplay was generally good in the first half with tense and at the same time uneasy repulsive tone.

The second half resembles the Keanu Reeves Hollywood film "Speed" . I am not sure if this is what the makers intended it to be but the quality and cinematography of the action seems to be reminiscent of Hollywood films released in the 1990s. Though the second half is not a direct copy , it seems obvously inspired by that film with a few not so great stunt sequences .scenes that involve stunts could have been improved with a better stunt direction that could have possibly elevated the film to international standards.

However the inclusion of the bus scene and its cheesey characters ruined what could have been a classic thriller if the tone was continued along the lines of the first half of the screenplay. Unnecessary dialogues and comedy dialogues with characters trying to be witty could have been avoided. The inclusion of run of the mill stereotypical supporting characters usually found in masala films just ruined the serious message of the film in the second half. But strangely though a sense of dread and repulsion can be felt throughout the film despite these flaws.

Watchable for the social message inherent in the film but in terms of hybrid action blockbuster, it falls short of standards in the genre.

Can be considered as one of the best movies of 2020s decade
23 December 2022
A struggling young musician, along with his two friends, with the help of a quantum physicist goes back in time to prevent the death of his mother. What happens next? The plot and exection is simple, but rest assured u will not be disappointed and will be taken on a magical thrill and emotional ride for 2 hours.

It is aslo good to see yesteryear actress Amala's return to big screen and she does not disappoint. 3 friends meeting their own kid versions and trying to influence their future, lead to some interesting situations and highly enjoyable moments. The casting is perfectly apt and do a wonderful job. Cinematography and music perfectly complement the drama. Despite of a few minor dips in the latter half, it still ends up as one heartwarmingly satisfying watch with a thoughtful underlying message. This sci-fi drama is emotional and engaging, with the finest performances from the cast. All the characters were fleshed out well. This is time travel done right.

based on mythology of Sudalai Madan ....Average but not worth much of the hype,,,,
25 November 2022
Firstly i watched the Tamil dubbed version . Having come from Tamil films , there was not much of a story except the usual mainstream ( one line story : A rich man tried to oppress the poor and the fight for land rights), no script, no meaningful dialogue delivery. And the main part, culture ; They failed to show the richness of culture maybe only except in small parts. The main positive aspect about this film are the good visuals and the authentic rural setting.

So many people will be offended but the truth is, movie is just on the the average. However is nothing special in this film which we never saw in Tamil Hindi or Telegu films which at most times have more fleshed story lines. Its hard to understand what the fuss is about regarding this film. For most part of the film , the politics between different groups of people regarding the aquisition of the land is portrayed. However it would have been much better if the major parts of the film concentrated on the greatness and mystique of the protector deity.

The acting performances are very typical of Kannada films . The first half a dragging storyline and comedy with quirky one-liners of cheap grade films in the 1990s. The fight scenes are not inspiring except for the final scene where it feels slightly better. It has some decent music and cinemamatography that is not unlike other films in Tamil or Telegu. And thats about as much positive as u can get . Otherwise it is an average film with as compared with other regional films.

inspired by a few old movies shines in parts but marred in others
2 November 2022
The film is a biopgraphy of an immigrant who falls to the underworld . Gautham Menon shows captures the grime , dirt and dim settings of immigrants holed up somewhere in the world in constraint spaces . The dirty walls , shophouses. , the unkept latrines, slavery conditions , sights , smells and sounds of dirty streets and sweat. Throughout the first half , all the imagery and sounds , feels like an allegory about the nature of violence that is about to come as we see with many GVM films who introduced us this concept with his crime thriller films. GVM has excelled in the first half in setting the tone but somehow loses the plot along the way. The film would have done better if GVM had continued a crime plot on the same grim settings which introduces our main prioaganist Simbu , as he steps into the world of exploitation and slavery.

Simbu has given a decent performance in this film in the first half. However the film falls short and marred as the plot progresses along , other than the perfomance of simbu, the action sequences are uninspiring and fails to induce thrills in the viewer. Like we had seen in past GVM movies like Khakka Khakka. GVM has been known to pioneer and set the example of the action sequences that we today back in the early 2000s with Khakka Khakka and even in his recent films like Ennai Arindhal. But here , his originality has somewhat waned. In this film the action sequences are not nuanced enough like his earlier films. The problematic aspect of the film are the romance sequences , other than a single scene with a good dialogue by Simbu, much of the romance seems to be a reworked version of GVm's earlier films like "vinnai thandi varuvaya". The lead actress seems to be mainly emotion-less throughout the film and the probably the least stellar heroine of any GVM film.

At times film feels like a new age mashup of some 1980s movies like "Sathya" "Amaran" and even GVM's earlier movies like Ennai "Nokki Paayum Thotta", especially in the second half . Although the screenplay is generally good, the 2nd half of the the film feels like we had seen it all before from GVM. The film feels like the the first half is disjointed with the second. The first half which was intriguing that was constructed in the beginning right from the protaganist in a village who arrives at his uncles house and later finds him comitting suicide. The film would have been better if it had taken off from this point and moved on to a conspiracy or plot , keeping to the GVM tradition of introducing us the "crime plot", but instead takes us to biographic events of the protaganist. The climax is uninspiring and mainly similar to GVm's earlier Acham Enbadhu Madamaimayada.

Overall the film is watachbale but not something to rave about as a classic like Kamalhassan's Sathya or Karthik's Amaran.

a cliqued anime meant to satisfy Japanese purists
20 October 2022
A cliqued anime meant to satify purists. Defirntely not in the ame league as classics such as Vampire Hunter... Watched it with high expectations but ended up as an just an average outing, simple did not give me the vibes of Vampire hunter There is nothing groundbreaking in the story nor the art . The only saving grace is some decent voice acting The first half tries to set the mood for a demonic atmosphere but fails to to do so. Tere is not enough action inthe scond half and most of of the action scenes are uninspiring .The style of drawing is is classic anime with overly bright scenes with non detailed backgrounds simply ruins the expereince and run contary to the theme of film. Overall watchable if u have nothing else to atch. However will not retun back for a second viewing,

Started off as excellent with interesting action sequences but loses steam
9 October 2022
Technically a brilliant film with technically brilliant action sequences ever in tamil cinema especially the impressive assassination scenes The film started off in the template of Vikram's earlier 2005 film Anniyan with a protagonist having double lives. The the inclusion of a family sibling angle flashback story ruined the experience.

It should have fared well if it was a spiritual successor to his 2005 film Anniyan The major problem with script is that the film feels convoluted and disjointed in the first and second half. It is like 2 separate films. In fact the script should have continued where the intermission began with the civilians turning against vikram or the mysterious hacker figure could have been some rival gang ect.. But the script took on a convoluted approach. Overall a one time watch but it will not be another career changing vikram classic like Sethu and Anniyan.

usual run of the mill average thriller and one time watch
7 October 2022
The film is generally fact paced and gets straight to the point without the usual lengthy character portrayal in first half... The second half picks up a bit of pace. However a few flaws in the screenplay and execution, the action scenes are not really inspiring as u would expect from other directors like Gautham Menon. The story is a very average run of the mill stuff . Nothing we had not seen before. There are hardly any guns in the film or big explosions. Jai's acting comes off across as a bit flat as compared to his previous movies. What saves the movie is probably the pacing style which keeps the viewer engaged with new twists and turns Overall watchable low budget film.

Handing could have been better
31 August 2022
Went in after reading the hype of this film. The violence portrayal is not as brutal as one would think. The script and action sequences are overly simple and the characters lack the intensity of revenge based characters. The film could have been much more deft if the comic book presentation could have been avoided. The acting of Keerthy Suresh at times comes off as over acting although SelvarRagavan does a decent job of his character. The cinematography is decent and mainly a one shot capture in most scenes . Overall the intensity of emotions is fairly present throughout the film. Its a worth a one time watch .

Had potential....shines in parts but ruined by 2000s style typical masala clichés
21 August 2022
The movie is generally had potential for a biographic blockbuster film but the content was ruined by typical masala clichés like slow motion cinematography , overused dialogues and typical masala background music and cliqued acting reminiscent of 2000s Tamil movies in the past. The lead character's Dhanush style acting lacks originality.

If u liked films like MANIRATNAM'S Ravanan and Asuran , this film tried to be combination of both but ends up neither. And fails in the screenplay presentation and character portrayal and persona.

One time watchable.

Is this a movie from 2006? Vel 2.0?!!.....
1 August 2022
After he success of Jhai Bhim , expected more from Suriya, However this time its disappointing. There is nothing new or groundbreaking in this film. And it feels like a Suriya movie from year 2006 with characters having touchscreen phones instead of Nokia or flip close phones! It seems like the makers took a script 15 years ago , the film got shelved and and Suriya wants to finish it. This movie feels like something stuck in mid 2000s

From the fight scenes to the unnecessary comedy scenes, everything feels like 2000s formula movies. Sathyaraj and Saranya's comedy scenes aren't inspiring and most of the movie is filled with their comedic performances which one finds hard to appreciate. IF the film sets out to convey a social message, it fails to do so as the handling and execution is ridiculous from alternating from serious scenes to comedy is in itself disasterous script writing. Cinematography is uninspiring and the 2000s slow motion "matrix" camerawork is clearly outdated and a fad thing from the past long expired. The climax is the final let down in this film, just too simplistic to begin with.

One of the most grueling aspect of this movie is that main protagonist Suriya is shown at the beginning to be a tough no nonsense guy but as the film progresses he gets pawned by the villain time and again. It looks as if the main villain is the star of the show. There are simply no "Wow" moments of Suriya to be seen in this movie. The fight and action scenes are minimal and the cat and mouse game formula is tried and tired repeat from other films.

Cant beleive it . Worst than Jurassic Park 3
26 July 2022
Back in 2001 i always thought the third installment in the series was the worst. We never had another Jurassic park movie for the next 15 years,,

While sitting through this movie, from the very start the of the movie , u can already sense the cheesiness of the plot. With return of the original cast , i expected a more interesting plot. I was disappointed, To add on , some irritating youth and new face characters who look bland with no sense of acting

Well this one makes the third watchable.

Unreleased movie with Remade Tamil movie soundtrack "May Madham" by A.R. Rahman
26 March 2022
This soundtrack is in fact dubbed from the 1994 Tamil film May Madham. This movie is relatively unknown and was acted by unknown actors as well. Somehow the cast and team which worked on this movie seems non existent now.

It had a new story structure and presentation which at the time was still experimental in India...But it featured ARR's music which seem to be the dominant aspect of the whole affair.

The original movie was one of the greatest flops but is remembered for the great music composed by ARR. The soundtrack is an exceptionally rendered piece of perfection a head of its time and Rahman has given a great soul to the songs. The lyrics are awesome and so is the composition of instrumental variations which seems the most comprehensive for any ARR album yet.

ARR's varied use of keyboard, piano, violin and a dozen other instruments which disintegrates in fluid transitions is simply mind-blowing. The sound effects synthesis and recording were simply out of this world yet to this day!

The songs were much critically talked about back in 1994 when Rahman was at the threshold of his career..

I clearly remember I was just 13 when I listened to this, now I am 37...I do miss this soundtrack terribly then when I had my first teenage crush and obsessively listening to the romantic numbers in the album.

The BGM score for the movie was of high quality too. This album and a few soundtracks released back then by Rahman had that Midas touch to them which somewhat is missing in his latest works

Imo this is perfect nostalgia for those wanting to experience Rahman's old style of composing back in the 90s.

Indeed the composer had a better style back then with more emphasis on creating moods through clever manipulation of sound and rhythm breaks Love u Hamesha is the perfect testament to that.

Each of the tracks has the distinctive quality which differentiates between them...

The music feels clear and crisp just like newer releases In fact u cant tell the difference cos of Rahman's excellent technical wizardry.

20 over years later this soundtrack still has the vibrancy and heart warming melody which made the original a hit..

A rare one to miss especially those hindi listeners who had not listened to the original and craving for some nostalgia. Hearing the songs simply transports u back to the good old 90s when the Rahman phenomenon was right in your face and happening = Worth your money.

Decent one time watch if u like combination of Silent hill and Wind CHill
27 March 2021
Not a great deal of gore and blood but it makes for some decent. A simple story, a ride share driver and passenger takes a wrong turn and get stuck in supernatural road which leads them in circles. Despite the entire film being set in the broken down car scenario the story is never in one location for too long it gets the characters to explore out. The film , tries to tell a tale of redemption in parts, amd strikes a some emotional chord as the characters are shown scenes of their own lives and the demons within which they are fighting in their waking lives. Though the story is not original ( done before in movies like 2007 Wind Chill), it makes up for some decent acting and supernatural moments. It's not hard to become immersed in the first hour or so when u are anticipating what happens next. As usual , things are fairly clichéd and predictable as with most horror films until the end where a plot twist happens.,. There's no sex , shock scenes and hardly any gore. There should've been a little more work on the script and it might have been great if the the mythology of the Toll man is explored in a little more detail. Overall the film did a decent job with the settings and atmosphere.....But it didn't elevate it enough to make it something that will stand out.

Remake of Tamil film. First movie of Shankar in Bollywood
13 August 2020
Although not as good as the tamil version, as a standalone it is a breakthrough movie in Bollywood . It remains as.the first and only movie of ace Tamil director, Shankar in Bollywood , and not dubbed version but an original remake. Again Shankar has done what he had always done in Tamil industry movies, that is to awe the audience with top class cinematography, story, dialogues and sets and music and to bring his style to Bollywood.
