This is one of the great mysteries of the 20th Century.

To try to understand the story you have examine the background. The brief account as told in 'The Man Who Melted Away' is a short dramatisation using the known facts. In the 1930s policing was much more of an ad hoc affair and the local police did not have access to much in the way of proper premises or vehicles and they had to rely on landlines to communicate by phone.

Given also that the inspector in charge of the investigation did not believe that Evelyn had been murdered or that any strange man had been involved or even existed, it is small wonder that the wilful suppression of witness statements in order to support the theory that Evelyn had set fire to herself either wilfully as an act of suicide or accidentally led to a deeply flawed investigation.
