Dara iz Jasenovca (2020)
Disturbing but important film for about a little known chapter of the Holocaust
It is a good example of cinema that used a lot of primary sources and consulting historians to delve into a part of WWII often left out of mainstream history textbooks. This film is about the Holocaust perpetrated by the Independent State of Croatia against the Serbs, Roma, and Jews of the parts of the Yugoslavia taken over by this Nazi puppet government. But even senior members of the SS were troubled by just how brutal their murderous rampages were. Concentration camps just for children, mutilations, and torture characterized this reign of terror.
The little girl who plays the titular character is an amazing young actress. To ask a child to perform in such a role is to ask a lot, psychologically, for someone young. Yet children were separated from their parents, used as slave labor, and brutally murdered by the Ustase (Croatian fascist party) in the Jasenovac camps. I would recommend this film to anyone studying the history of WWII or the general modern history of the Balkans.
The Northman (2022)
Underrated great film in the action genre
The attention to historical detail in in Robert Eggers' films is impressive, and this one really lived up to his commitment to make an action film that is also a learning experience. The acting was top-notch, as expected, and I liked how the took the story east into the lands of the Rus, rather than focus on the Nordic-British Isles connection as so many other films and television series have done as of late. I am not a big watcher of action films, but this one was impressive because it combined a lot of action with a lot great history and anthropology, making it quite a unique feature. I loved The Witch, and appreciated The Lighthouse. Eggers does quality over of quantity, and I am thankful his work is getting the recognition it deserves!
Cassandra Awakens (2021)
Unique magical realism
This film deals with the medical world from a child's perspective. A child facing a serious diagnosis exists somewhere between a dream and an alternate reality as she comes to inside a clinical center. The color palette in the film alternates between symbolizing life and death, while the imagery does the same. It uses beautiful cinematography, but ultimately reminds viewers of the disassociation experienced by a young patient in the state of her body failing. A good short for those who like the magical realism genre. I am personally a fan of Del Toro, Bergman, and the like, so this was a pleasant surprise on IndieFlix.
