Maidaan (2023)
Best Football Film made in Indian Cinema!⚽
Passey Reviews 🎥🍿
Amit Sharma's biographical sports drama, 'Maidaan,' isn't just a film; it's a thundering goal for Indian cinema! ⚽ With the legendary former football coach Syed Abdul Rahim at its heart, this movie scores big on inspiration and storytelling.
The film depicts S A Rahim's determined efforts to lift Indian football to global prominence, despite facing challenges like outdated sports systems, regional biases, bureaucratic obstacles, and occasional doubters motivated by personal egos and politics. Talk about a real-life underdog story! 🏆
And who else but Ajay Devgn to lead the charge as the coach? His performance is a masterclass in intensity, capturing Rahim's grit and determination with every glance. Plus, Priyamani, Gajraj Rao, Rudranil Ghosh, Chaitanya Sharma, Amartya Ray, and the supporting cast score big with their stellar performances. 👏
But what sets 'Maidaan' apart is its no-nonsense approach. There's no melodramatic fluff here-just hard-hitting dialogue and raw emotion that hits you right in the feels. And with outstanding screenplay and top-notch cinematography, the visuals are as striking as a perfectly executed corner kick. 🎬
Watching this film is like witnessing a match-winning goal in the theatre; an adrenaline-pumping experience that I haven't felt since 'Dangal' hit the screens 8 years ago! ⚡
All in all, 'Maidaan' is a must-watch for every sports enthusiast. It's not just the best football film in Indian cinema; it's a triumphant celebration of the human spirit. So lace up your boots and get ready for 180 minutes of pure cinematic magic! 🌟
Madgaon Express (2024)
Madgaon Express Hits the Funny Bone!
Passey Reviews 🎥🍿
Buckle up, folks, because 'Madgaon Express' is a rollercoaster ride of laughter that's worth every mile! 🚂💨
From start to finish, this comedy flick had me in stitches. And guess what? It's a breath of fresh air in the world of comedy films! No cringe-worthy dialogues or cheap gags here; just pure, unadulterated fun that's suitable for all ages.
Director Kunal Khemu, in his debut venture, hits the comedy bullseye with precision. Sure, he may not be Priyadarshan or Rohit Shetty (yet!), but he's definitely done a brilliant job! The dialogues are hilarious, the cinematography is on point, and the editing keeps the pace zipping along like, well, an express train!
The lead cast Divyendu, Pratik Gandhi, and Avinash Tiwary bring the house down with their hilarious antics. It was a treat to watch Upendra Limaye do a role similar to the one he nailed in 'Animal'. Nora Fatehi, Chhaya Kadam, and Remo D'Souza also deliver decent performances, adding their own flair to the madcap adventure.
Feeling the itch for a Goa getaway? Even if your plans fail, 'Madgaon Express' is the ultimate substitute. It's got all the vibes of 'The Hangover,' 'Dil Chahta Hai,' and 'Dhol' rolled into one. So grab your chaddi buddies, hop on board, and prepare for a laugh riot!
Crew (2024)
Disappointing- Missed the Mark for Fun and Originality
Passey Reviews 🎥🍿
With high hopes pinned on its stellar female lead cast, 'Crew' falls flat on its face, failing to deliver the anticipated entertainment. Rather than exploring the concept of mocking Vijay Mallya in a fresh and comedic manner, the film opts for a tired and uninspired approach.
Despite the charming presence of Tabu, Kareena Kapoor, and Kriti Sanon, the film struggles to engage the audience, leaving them eagerly awaiting its conclusion. Unfortunately, even this talented trio delivers lackluster performances, possibly marking one of the low points in their careers.
The film's shortcomings extend beyond its cast, with poor dialogue, sluggish pacing in the first half, and a recycled background score comprising old, overused songs.
While 'Crew' may not be entirely unbearable to sit through, it certainly fails to live up to expectations. It's just your average, mindless flick that offers little in the way of originality or entertainment. Save yourself the trouble and wait for it to pop up on Netflix.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024)
A Titan Clash with Spectacular Visuals
'Godzilla vs. Kong: The New Empire' packs a punch with its gripping action and the adorable relationship between Kong and Mini Kong. The titans certainly deliver on their role, but the humans also play a significant part in the film's narrative and take up equal screen time in this one.
However, a slightly longer runtime could have allowed for more titan screen time and a slower pace to fully let viewers indulge in the epic showdown.
Despite this, the film roars with its stunning visual effects and heart pounding action sequences. Watch it in IMAX to appreciate every moment of the monstrous clash.
Overall, the film offers a thrilling cinematic experience that will leave fans of the MonsterVerse craving for more!
Swatantrya Veer Savarkar (2024)
Savarkar Unveiled in this Cinematic Masterpiece
After watching 'Swatantra Veer Savarkar,' I was immersed in the world of one of India's most controversial figures, a Brahmin from Maharashtra. Randeep Hooda's performance as Savarkar was truly remarkable. His ability to fully get into the skin of his characters, as seen in 'Sarbjit,' was evident once again, bringing depth and authenticity to the narrative with his acting prowess .
I was particularly impressed by the screenplay and direction of the film. Hooda's debut directorial venture showcased his skill and vision, bringing to life the struggles faced by our freedom fighters in their long journey to liberate India from British rule. The story not only entertained differently but also shed light on historical truths that often go unnoticed or unmentioned in our history textbooks.
While some people may find the screenplay to be a bit slow-paced, I believe it adds to the film's overall charm, allowing viewers to absorb the nuances of Savarkar's troublesome journey. Despite its pacing, 'Swatantra Veer Savarkar' is a cinematic gem that deserves recognition, especially for Randeep Hooda's masterful performance.
Would recommend watching this film for its captivating portrayal of history!
Yodha (2024)
Missed Flight to Entertainment
Watched 'Yodha' in the theatres and the film didn't quite take off for me. Now, I know it's not fair to compare every film of the lead to 'Shershaah' but this one? It should've stayed cozy on OTT, for it didn't give any big screen vibes.
The dubbing was horrendous! It was like watching a badly synced lip-sync battle. Seriously, there were more dubbing blunders than scenes worth remembering. One wouldn't expect this from a Dharma Productions film.
And the natural vibes? Nowhere to be found! Sidharth Malhotra's acting felt more forced than my morning yoga routine, and don't even get me started on his chemistry with Raashi Khanna. Zero sparks in there, as their flight didn't take off either!
Talking about the lead actresses, Raashi and Disha Patani, they seemed completely out of sync with the rest of the movie, like wearing flip-flops to a formal event. Let's be real, a seasoned actress could have done Raashi's role way better.
Action sequences? Dull. Original music? None. Good background score? Not a chance. They even messed up a hit Punjabi song like 'Qismat' and Sidharth tried his best to 'act' in every scene, but it felt about as natural as a cat wearing sunglasses.
Now, let's also give credit where it's due. There were a solid 20 minutes in the 2nd half where I was kinda hooked. But the rest? Abrupt start, expected ending, and a whole lot of mediocrity in between.
Save yourself the time and money, 'Yodha' might not have pulled off a plane hijack successfully, but it sure hijacked my mind into watching a downright not so great film for at the end of it I walked out feeling like a 'Gadha'!
Shaitaan (2024)
A Spook-less Spectacle
Was eagerly waiting to watch this one! However, I left feeling a bit disappointed as the film failed to live up to my expectations. R. Madhavan, a very talented actor, was underutilized in the movie. Much of the key moments were already revealed in the trailer, which was more captivating than the actual film itself. The storyline lacked depth and failed to deliver any real scares or intensity, especially considering the potential of exploring the concept of black magic. Ajay Devgn had nothing special to offer.
However, despite these drawbacks, Janki Bodiwala's portrayal of the daughter stood out with her impressive acting skills, showcasing a wide range of emotions in all scenes. It was commendable to see her excel alongside top actors like Ajay Devgn and Madhavan. Jyothika's performance as the mother was also strong, clearly overshadowing the leading male actors in the film.
Overall, Shaitaan fell short of being a memorable supernatural horror film. Despite the talented cast, the lacklustre plot and missed opportunities for genuine scares left much to be desired. It is a film that could have been much more impactful with better execution and exploration of its themes and storyline.
While the film might be worth a watch for some, it's unlikely to leave a lasting impression. If you are looking for a truly frightening movie, you might want to skip this one in the theatre and watch it on Netflix once released.
Crakk: Jeetega... Toh Jiyegaa (2024)
Crakk Jeetega... Toh Jiyegaa: An Unfortunate Misfire in the World of Action and Sports Cinema
Passey Reviews
'Crakk Jeetega... Toh Jiyegaa'- yes that's the complete name of the film, which sounds as offbeat and weird as the film itself. Some might say I was 'Crakk' enough to go watch it in the theatre!
The movie kicks off with Vidyut Jammwal expressing gratitude to his "Jammwalions" (fans) but, unfortunately, the film doesn't offer much to keep that support intact.
It lacks in every aspect and there's nothing extraordinary to offer- from the acting, storyline, screenplay to setting, cinematography, & background score. The music (apart from Vishal Mishra's Jeena Haraam) is forgettable, and even the director Aditya Datt ('Table No. 21' fame) fails to impress. It feels like they cooked up a recipe from 'Death Race' and 'Khatron Ke Khiladi' and sprinkled some 'Luck' vibes from 15 years ago. 'Luck' starring Imran Khan and Sanjay Dutt had ironically, also faced a similar fate, by getting no luck at the box office.
Arjun Rampal is decent, Vidyut does his action stunt & ripped body show thing (as always), but Amy Jackson and Nora Fatehi seem like they got lost on set and are a complete misfit with their horrendous acting and irritating accents. A well-executed dance number by Nora might have added some appeal, but that one didn't exist in the film.
The film tries to mix extreme sports with action, but it's like they forgot the recipe. It drags on for 156 minutes, and you might find yourself checking your watch. You may not want to watch the last song in the film either. The film isn't unbearable, but certainly can be missed in the theatre.
So, 'Crakk Jeetega... Toh Jiyegaa' isn't exactly the adrenaline-packed thrill ride you would hope for. Even if you're a die-hard Vidyut Jammwal fan, this one might not crack your movie favorites list.
Animal (2023)
Had my mind blown by the film 'Animal'! Fantastic film!
Ranbir Kapoor is on another level, redefining the game with his acting prowess. He brings a perfect blend of swag, emotions, good looks and upholds the Kapoor legacy.
Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the Kabir Singh magician, does it again! Animal is a wild ride of unpredictability, killer action, outstanding screenplay and songs that will stay on loop. The storyline is wild, the action is killer, and those Punjabi beats and dialogues make it a total paisa vasool experience!
Sure, there's been chatter about the film's themes, but isn't cinema supposed to spark discussions? Remember 'Kabir Singh'? The debates around it contributed to its massive success.
'Animal' is following suit, gearing up to cross the 800-900 crore mark (already touching 600 crores in just 8 days).
Art is subjective, and every piece has room for improvement. Each one has their own opinion. While the film might lack a conventional storyline and robust female characters, let's also celebrate the positives. As a cinephile, those 3 hours and 21 minutes were pure entertainment. Sometimes, that's all you need. Just leave your mind at home for this one and you will enjoy!
And can we talk about the Deol brothers making a comeback? Sunny Deol's all-time blockbuster 'Gadar 2' and Bobby Deol doing his mad barbaric thing in 'Animal'- nostalgia hit me like a truck this year. They made our millennial days better with their unforgettable performances in great films! 'Lord Bobby' deserves all the appreciation he has been receiving! In fact it has been a great year for the entire Deol family, as veteran actor Dharamendra also gave a good performance in RRKPK!
Here's to cinema that makes us think, feel, and appreciate the craft!
PS: Remember, if film characters really inspired people in reality, most of us would be criminals, roaming around with guns, smoking, drinking all day, practicing domestic violence, etc. Etc. Thankfully, it's just the magic of the movies!
Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya (2024)
The film falls short of expectations, leaving much more to be desired.
Passey Reviews
'Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya' attempts to blend science fiction with romantic comedy, starring Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon. However, the film falls short of expectations, leaving much more to be desired.
The major drawback lies in the narrative predictability. A large portion of the storyline, the first half and bits from the second, is seen in the trailer itself. The central theme of a human falling in love with a robot, feels underexplored and lacks the depth needed to engage the audience.
While Dimple Kapadia and Kriti Sanon shine with their performances, stealing the spotlight with charm, grace, and beauty, the same can't be said for the film as a whole.
Dimple Kapadia, in particular, is a treat to watch due to her charismatic personality. Kriti Sanon takes on the challenging role of a humanoid character, and her portrayal is praiseworthy. The seamless blend of robotic and human elements in her performance is impressive, and she adds a stunning presence to every scene. However, these bright spots are not enough to salvage the film.
Director Amit Joshi's attempt at situational comedy is decent, but falls short, failing to entertain all age groups. Shahid Kapoor, despite his capability to shoulder brilliant rom-coms, is underutilized, leaving fans wanting more from his character.
The screenplay, music, background score, while not outstanding, serve their purpose sufficiently. However, they lack the unique and catchy elements.
The film lands in the realm of average cinema. The predictable plot, underutilization of talent, and the film's overall suitability for the OTT platform make it a miss in theaters. Consider saving this one for a cozy night, on your favourite streaming device.
