Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
More of this PLEASE!
I'm utterly amazed. While I can't claim to be a huge Queen fan (though I do enjoy many of their songs), and I'm uncertain about the accuracy of the storytelling (though considering Brian May and Roger Taylor's co-production involvement, it seems quite accurate), I found the movie captivating and emotionally stirring. Despite reading some professional reviews seeking documentary precision, I disagree; this is an engaging narrative about one of the world's most iconic bands, and the film excels in every aspect. (The critics were notably wrong about Bohemian Rhapsody upon its release).
Brian May highlighted in a red carpet interview the excellent casting, a sentiment I wholeheartedly agree with. Every major role is impeccably chosen, and the entire band's performances are outstanding. However, I must emphasize Rami Malek's portrayal of Freddie, which has Oscar-worthy written all over it. What he achieves is almost unparalleled. Taking on such a role is commendable, and Malek delivers beyond expectations, even slightly surpassing Michael Douglas in Behind the Candelabra. Gwilym Lee as Brian May is also spot-on, but Malek truly carries the production on his shoulders. It felt like witnessing our beloved Freddie all over again.
Another Gay Movie (2006)
Come one, it's CLASSIC
I attended with two straight friends who are very open-minded. We laughed non-stop throughout the film. And we were not alone. The consistently tough-to-entertain West Hollywood crowd was guffawing along with us. I was leery of the gay 'American Pie' references. I just didn't think it would make the cut. Man, was I wrong! Sure, much can be said about the raunchiness and some of the more contrived humor, but hey, it was funny. If one is mainly concerned with social relevance in a film, skip this. It's likely not for you. But if you are looking to laugh and just be entertained for the evening and a few days later, you gotta see this one!!! I am usually a pretty generous voter, tougher on comedies. And I swear I could not give this less than an 8.
Good Enough: A Modern Musical (2023)
Grrrr, Trevor's Dad - I hated him.
Finally a gay indie film with a happy ending! I just knew that this was going to end bad but to my surprise it didn't. Trevor, the news reporter is very cookie cutter of a character but loved the chemistry between him and Jamal. Trevor's father is the biggest jerk I've ever encounter in a movie. I wanted to give him a chance but nope, he ruined any redemption possibilities every single time. Just when I thought he couldn't get more nasty he did. I can write this entire review about how much I hated Trevor's dad. Good job on whoever wrote and the guy that play Trevor's dad. He did awesome at making me hate him. When he slapped Trevor's mom, I almost had to pause the movie because I couldn't believe how much I was hating him. I'm so glad that she left him in the end. I hope he's dead in the sequel because there's no way to redeem a character like that. Okay enough of Trevor's dad. Let's talk about the low down dirty of Jamal's dad. The absolute audacity to show up at this point in his life. The dads suck big time in this movie, so if you're a dad do not watch this on Father's Day. There's so many great things about this movie. The music is phenomenal, I didn't expect the the music to be that good until I started watching it. For those that haven't watched this yet, do yourself a favor and do so and get prepared to hate Trevor's dad. Grrrr!
