Visual effects are better
4 March 2022
Japanese Onmyoji movies, even though dated were able to hold the attention and eerie atmosphere quite better than this Chinese adaptation. The Visual effects have improved than the recent chines barrage of CGI based movies I would say.

Homophobic at the core
20 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Writing was good and script was tight but the creator's view on same sex relationship are very apparent. They have no idea how to write the same sex relationship and view it as something to be ashamed of. I don't understand why Antony was so scared and depressed when he found out he had a lover who is a guy? Did he forget that he was gay? Why did Aaryan get so angry at him for having a relationship, it might have been too private for him to divulge. Would he have reacted the same way of it was a girl? Why did he enter another person's resident without knocking. I would have given an 8 as it was a well made thriller but had to deduct one point for this silly logic.

Quaint little story from a small town bengal
15 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The narrative has some problems and odd moments but the story has its charm for sure. Paoli dam and Biswajit among the others with good support from others. It however seemed liked Paoli's character took no time to get over her beloved's death.

Why Sarah Ali Khan
3 January 2021
Why couldn't it be anybody else. This girl has ruined the movie. Completely put me off by her wannabe cute amateurish act. This could have been soo good with a capable actress.

Could have been 90 mins shorter
21 August 2020
Anirban played his character really well but I am not sure why he signed up for this film. This was ridiculously slow with nothing really going on. Saheb chaterjee was terribly terribly miscast with his modern haircut, clothing and general body language. I failed to understand the point of most of the characters. One performance i truly enjoyed was that of the girl enlisted by the detective to extract information from Mahim. She was a delight. The dress design, the haircuts were not true to the era at all, no attention was paid to the details. Awful waste of time.

Uninspiring
31 July 2020
This was a bore fest, dialogues were very very poorly written. There are twists and turns, but they fail to generate any interest. Vidyut Jamwal has a commanding personality, but his built seems out of the place most of the time. His role choices are limited by his physique and voice. Kenny is confident and impressive, Amit Sadh was good, Vijay Verma was okay. Oh and Shruti hassan is no good as well, but didn't expect much from her.

Average

I had higher expectations maybe from Hansal Mehta and Rajkumar Rao. The movie is basically a character study. Even though people might take it and use it in the wrong sense, but such movies too need to be made. Rajkumar rao was good, maybe a bit less intense than i expected. The british accent was very inconsistent and poor, and that i something which is important in this film.

It is very entertaining
27 June 2020
Barry threw me off, didnt expect it to be so enjoyable. Bill hader was always brilliant and here he is in top form. All the chechen guys are great and the scenes with them really come through especially in the second season. Another standout performance is from anthony who plays Noho hank. He is funny, idiotic, empathic and a true friend. He character is written so well and he moulds into his character so brilliantly that i tend yo forget this is the same guy who scared the wits out of me in Gotham. Submarine sandwich, optometrist by nature, man this guy is so so funny. This is a very fresh story and has never been played out before. Strongly recommended.

Watch only for the performances. Srishti srivastava impresses and is given good opportunities to do so.

Decent attempt
17 March 2020
A decent first attempt, seriously. Didn't expect much but didn't find a lot to complain with the directorial debut. Pretty much better than the over glossed one man revenge movies which is the norm for big budget hindi movies. In acting department Parvin Dabas gives a subdued performance and the others support ably. I would have appreciated if Yashpal Sharma was used some more as he is a criminally underrated actor.

Weirdest movie of all times
22 February 2020
Kept on trying to find an underlying theme, not sure there is one. Seemed like sewn together bits of snl skits. I do enjoy odd movies but this was hard to follow.

Ghost Stories (2020)

Kind of hit and miss, not many ghosts though
6 January 2020
I found the first one surprisingly good, subdued, well acted by Jahnvi. Didn't expect that. I found AK's second one challenging to understand, maybe too complicated. Was all that happening in her mind? Or is that magic realism? Shobita is pretty, but not in a traditional indian way. She has got big eyes, which might have actually added to the character here. The whole setup, the colors, the aura was definitely eerie. Contrary to the others, I didn't like Dibakar's piece. It started promising, then it became weird. I believed he had a good idea but failed to execute it properly. It became ridiculous after a while. Also it was too long, it would have benefited from a shorter timeline. Karan Johar's story was sub par. There was no point to it at all. A total let down.

Invokes extreme nostalgia
20 December 2019
I absolutely love this movie. It always reminds me of my home, family, friends even though i am not from the west. There is some kind of warmth as well as longingness associated with this movie which is very rare. The characters really hit home. In the acting department, holy gosh natalie portman is terrific. It does deal with some taboo subjects but handle it very well. This is my go to movie for repeat watching.

How did they zero in on selenium?
8 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
It was good fun if of course you don't try to apply your brain. But when they used some weird logic to determine that it was selenium which could counter the alien organism, i was utterly disappointed. Come on man.

Couldn't finish it
11 August 2019
Really wanted to give this one a chance. Couldn't sit through the complete movie. It was to follow. The direction was amateurish, the dialogues were loud, actors trying too hard to be funny. A disaster really.

Unexpected gem
28 July 2019
Didnt expect much but turned out to be pretty good. Rahul bhatt has done above average work. The two leading ladies are okay, although aditi seemed to be lacking in some scenes. I can totally see Shiney Ahuja in the leading role as well.

Gangster (2016)

A pretty standard fare
15 October 2017
I watched a Bengali masala film arguably for the first time, mostly impressed by the pretty cinematography. There is a small twist involving mimi, otherwise it is a pretty standard fare with the larger than life gangster turned honest man hero who sets out for revenge by kicking and punching everything into oblivion. The debutante hero Yash seems earnest, but doesn't impress much. He doesn't have a lot of expressions in his quiver and his dialogue delivery is pretty boring too. Mimi, being the more experienced one delivers better and has got a bigger role than a eye candy. Gaurav Chakrabarty leaves a mark in his small role. Bratyo basu seems to try too hard, maybe that's what he was aiming for in order to play the main villain. I have a petty qualm though, everybody seemed understand bengali in a foreign land, what is up with that? Also, why don't they hire better Hindi speakers if they want the second villain to sound menacing? The guy was clearly aiming for the current happening dude look with his mustaches, hat and gaalis but the heavily accented Hindi was a real letdown.
