Tomb Raider (2018)
Too annoying to finish
This here heroine starts of by losing a fight against a Nazi looking lesbian, and in a way that shows the male gaze that she's nice and womanly, in spite of her well trained body, as well as feisty and stubborn which counts for cool in girls. As a regular watcher of real MMA I was already bored by the fight scene even though I was eating, but that were the good times compared to the progression the rest of the action scenes took. Never have I seen a male action hero being bashed about as much and moaning and groaning and almost crying ALL THE TIME. Awakens the best male fantasies of rescue, I'm sure. At the same time, she is, of course, supposed to be very full of character and backbone, a role model for our young ladies: the infamous strong female character.
By the way, a 2 in my book means: "too annoying too watch", wich is even worse than 3 "boring".
Florida Man (2023)
Such an intricate web woven...
... and put together with effortless swoops. I enjoyed myself immensely, even though I heartily disliked the main character, and not just because of his inexplicable accent. What a douchbag! But for the rest, I loved every bit, every character, wasn't bothered by any sexism (still way too rare even in this day and age) and laughed out long and loud several times - about Clark Gregg's character and antics especially. And, also pretty rare, I several times had not the slightest idea where things might be going next.
I will rewatch this for certain, preferably in one night, and the rating will be adjusted after - either to a 9 (endlessly rewatchable minus douchbag hero) or a 7, for slightly disappointing - but certainly no less.
The Rookie: True Crime (2021)
Fun Break
This was a perfect humorous break. Of course we did not need a break and many seem to have suffered severe withdrawal symptoms leavimg them unable to roll with the surprise that in my opinion turned out to be an absolute delight. Tjere can be no other reason for such a bad rating. I am just now discovering and binging The Rookie, so to read "December 2019" on the screen gave my heart a wrench, but the zany outbursts, flawlessly mixed in with the heartfelt ethics one loves The Rookie for, soon picked me up. The mixture of styles evoking a BAFTA-nominated director's documentary made for intense as well as absurd moments, I liked the characterplay between Tim and Lucy better than ever, fascinating on-point acting there, and no one could ever be a cooler female role-model than Harper, even in an interview. Sorry, got carried away there, I truly am happified.
Unzensiert - Bushido's Wahrheit (2021)
German History Y
A different look on German history, is what drove me to watch this. Turns out, I was right, it is. A very interessting one, too. It's also the insightful study of an artist, and two humans. Because Bushido's wife Anna-Maria, mother of, by now 8, children is what had me coming back every evening to another episode. She's got brains, and wit, and enviable moral integrity, plus she looks like a Barbiedoll, which is amazing to watch. Bushido himself is also eye-candy, so that was quite the feast. The production design is beautiful, the setup ok, with loads of years rolling by with type-writer speed and sound. The title Unzensiert, uncensored, is an illusion of course, but not more than that every gaze is determined by the person that does the gazing, does the cutting, the questioning. And tells the story in quite their own way, slightly counter chronological, setting up events by reflections of their consequences, and such artistry, sometime confusing, probably on purpose, always engaging. Never controversial, never challenging the statements of their protagonist. Still, every once in awhile, Bushido contradicts himself, over time. I'd say he evolves, others say he's lying, it's probably both, people are like that. The interviewer could have been more critical, but that would not have led to more truth, but rather to a closing up, I feel. Since I had never liked Gangster Rap, I finished the first season with a crash course on Bushido, and found his art over the years mirroring the man I came to "know" in the documentary. Except of course his ventures into dissing former colleagues for the same reason he is now being dissed for. Wich is truly funny to see, in hindsight.
I hope there will be a second season.
The Wild Wild West: The Night of the Sudden Plague (1966)
Who is he?
7 is pretty good in my book, but for this series is among the lower ratings: No fancy deathtraps to break out of for Mr. West.
The running gag is not funny, and just because of poor execution.
There is good acting all around, Nobu McCarthy is excellent, and so is Theo Marcuse. The bunch of robbers are believable enough cowboy-types.
What gets me, is that...
SPOILER!!!
... when West sees the mad Doctor, he seems to recognize him and vice versa. West grabs the man's hair and pulls it off, the guy himself follows this up by defiantly removing his false beard as well. They stare at each other... and nothing ever comes of it.
Maybe someone is able to spot meaning in the fact that the Doc was wearing false hair-stuff for no reason whatsoever (not in the least surprising his daughter, by the way). I thought, all right, maybe West (but not Artemus?!?) knows the man from a previous episode. But Marcuse had only appeared once before, as a mean-tempered Prison warden, with a strawberry blonde wife who (understandably) wants to escape just as badly as the prisoners do.
Here, he's supposed to be a humanitarian gone mad because of ill-treatment, so that does not match.
Maybe Mr. Moore had a hangover. Or the flu.
Tammy (2014)
one of the top-50 of all times ... at least
If ever there was a real, true ten, some movie with absolutely nothing wrong to spoil the fun you are having, it's this one. Usually there's some point or other in a movie that makes me uneasy at least. Something racist, or along these lines. Some stupid, harmful cliché. Some mean streak. Something unbelievable or out of character. Something that drags on too long. Not here. This one is just very funny (which is, I admit it, highly depending on taste) in a friendly way. By that I do not mean that it's what you call good clean family-fun, though. It just doesn't bother with deriding people for being what they are or feel. It's true to human nature without being disdainful. It's intelligent but not snobby. It's truly equalistic - equalism being the form of feminism that counts in, simply everyone. It's also quite beautiful, has a good score, perfect cutting and acting that'd take your breath away if you had the detachment to stop and think about the fact that these PEOPLE are actually actors doing their job. Also it's rather surprising several times, and that in itself is something of a rarity for a movie-addict. I'd highly recommend buying the DVD. It's ridiculously cheap to be had. I'm glad I did.
