The Tunnel of Love (1958)
yikes. This is lame.
I always liked Richard Widmark. I feel terrible for him, stuck in this bomb about a couple trying to adopt.
The plot is dopey, and Widmark is horribly miscast as a befuddled husband. Doris Day is...Doris Day.
By the way, there's an easy cure for their infertility: ditch the twin beds. The set looks recycled from Lucy and Ricky's move to Connecticut.
Black Legion (1937)
the more things change...
Bogart gets sucked into nativism in this brave little film. His performance is a tad heavy handed but forgivable since in 1937 he was new to the art and trained in theater. Bigotry was not a familiar theme in Hollywood; kudos to Warner Bros. for taking a stand. Supporting cast is up to the task, and Bogart - a Democrat and liberal- does a fine job portraying a man who feels cheated by foreigners. His character sounds eerily familiar in these chaotic times.
Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile (2019)
I've seen them all...
I'm reading a few slams about this movie portraying Bundy as possibly innocent. That's far- fetched. It is neither sugar- coated nor disrespectful to his victims. It focuses on the relationship between Bundy and the only women he attempted to live with as a "normal" man. I found it fascinating to see how the public foolishly falls for charm and good looks , willingly disregarding evidence to embrace notoriety with a wink and a nod. No slasher movie here; just a well-acted glimpse at the lives touched by Bundy's madness in ways other than murder. Lily Collins is excellent, and Zac Ephron is the best actor yet to portray the twisted personality that charmed even a seasoned judge into praising the damned and doomed Bundy.
Perry Mason (2020)
gorgeous!
I don't get the snark from critics. This series is filmed so beautifully I sometimes rewatch episodes just to appreciate the look of it. The plot has me hooked, and Rhys is wonderful- grubby, tortured and sexy. The cast is top notch. Don't listen to naysayers- judge for yourself.
The Opposite Sex (1956)
some movies shouldn't be remade
"The Women" - the original- with Norma Shearer in the lead, was superior by leaps and bounds. Why bother messing with the best? not to mention there are no men in the original. Joan Crawford was a much better Crystal Allen, and June Allyson makes my fillings hurt...and without Rosalind Russell ?
The Return of Doctor X (1939)
Bogie was right!
What a stinker. This was to Bogart what "The Silver Chalice" was to Paul Newman: an embarrassment.
Spitfire (1934)
a big Hepburn mistake
Painful. Hepburn as a hillbilly is horribly miscast. Not worth watching even out of curiosity.
The Miracle Worker (1962)
Who could not be moved?
I have a handful of true favorites; they are the films that rivet me to the screen and have the power to reduce me to tears no matter how many times I watch them. This film is one. Patty Duke and Ann Bancroft are simply stunning- I only regret being too young at the time to see them on Broadway. The dining room scene takes my breathe away, and the final moments of discovery, when the word "water" ignites Helen's memory, never loses its impact.
