2012 (2009)
Something to consider
I keep hearing this movie is unrealistic or, there is no character dept. Well, I have to say I REALLY enjoyed this movie, sure I would have done a few things differently, like instead of saying I love you and kissing they should have not wasted so much time in getting a certain problem resolved. Maybe then one of the characters would have survived. As for the un-realism...well, you're going to a movie about the end of the world, as predicted by a CALENDAR, that just so happens to have the date land on 12-21-12...I don't know what everyone expected. Last I heard this was a MOVIE, not a survival guide for the end of the world. If that's the case then I think you're better off watching a documentary/mockumentary. This was nothing more than a fun popcorn movie with lots of falling bridges and buildings and those edge of your seat scenes where you think everything is going to hell but at the last second everything turns out alright... don't go into this movie expecting an Oscar masterpiece (unless it's nominated for the special effects), enjoy the outlandish action scenes and the millions and millions of dollars at work.
The Final Destination (2009)
3D all the way.
Well well well, where should I begin?? First of all I have to give props to the producers for giving us yet again another splatter filled ride on the way to death's house. I must admit I was pretty let down by the leads this time around. Not only where they totally unbelievably unbelievable...well...actually that was pretty much it. The acting really wasn't that great. (Minus ONE point). And then there's the special effects...I'll admit I wasn't expecting a masterpiece after seeing parts 2 and 3 but hey, we're in 2009, if New Line can bring us "The Lord of the Rings", why be so stingy with this movie...I mean don't get me wrong they were okay but could have used a little less, 'animation'. It was like watching a gore-filled Pixar movie. (Minus ANOTHER point for the SFX). Ah and my I mention that who ever knocks this movie on plot needs to really go back and watch the previous 3 films. After the second film the plot really didn't matter, it was all about going in and watching these kids, or adults die in gruesome fashion.
Now on the PLUS side. As expected with the Final Destination series, we go in expecting some pretty horrific accidents. This one takes the cake, in my opinion. Not only does it incorporate everyday activities like: going to the mall, or going to a café, but it also throws in some pretty extra-ordinary situations for example *spoiler* a white supremacist going into a yard to dig up a hole to plant a burning cross...I mean these writers really thought out of the box this time, not that they haven't in the previous films they just went far out and beyond.
So, in conclusion, go into this not expecting an explanation for why death works this way because honestly, I really don't think we're EVER going to get one. Go into this expecting some pretty disgusting deaths, and make sure to check this out in 3D! There's nothing better than having virtual intestines flung at you.
8/10 for me on this one.
District 9 (2009)
Great but not the "BEST"
I kept hearing from people who caught the 'special' screening "Oh it's the best movie of the year! You gotta see it!"...I must admit, it was a good movie, but not the BEST. The plot was extremely original which I LOVED, the special effects are 'top notch' as promised in advertisements and reviews, but what it lacks in is execution, now don't give me s**t about my opinion because it's just that, MY opinion.
I was expecting some thing shocking, something that would blow my mind but the only thing that blew me away was really the theaters AC...oh and the plot. For me it was just another Alien movie...but it's not your typical alien movie. We're all used to watching ones with butt-loads upon butt-loads of action and violence and some pretty freakin' scary aliens but this wasn't anything like that...NOT that I'm complaining mind you, I just really disliked that it was made out to be this major action movie, and we're left with AT MOST 15 mins of serious alien vs human death-matches.
On the other hand, I was very impressed with the visual effects, story and acting. I gotta hand it to the main character, for being an unknown actor and not really starring in very many movies, he did a phenomenal job in this roll.
So I guess in the end all I can really say is if you decide to spend the $9.50 (or however much it is you spend on a ticket), go in prepared for lots of dialog, special effects. Luckily our theater here is still cheap so we only had to shell out $4.50 matinée price...so I guess the movie lived up to it's ticket price. Worth matinée if you can catch it, but probably not the full ticket price.
7.5 out of 10 for me.
Brüno (2009)
No one is spared...NO ONE
This outdid Borat by a landslide. Quite possibly the funniest movie I've seen since...well, Borat! The comedy is grosser, the nudity is MORE GRAPHIC. I went in expecting the unexpected and I gotta tell you guys, the whole thing was unexpected (with of course the exception of the scenes shown in the trailers), Bruno had me laughing non-stop from beginning to end. I had to look away a few times because it got a little over the top even for me.
Go in to this expecting what you saw in Borat...just think of it as, the GAY Borat.
Worth a check if you're into gross out humor and lots of gay jokes.
Enjoy!
Friday the 13th (2009)
Whoa...
My title pretty much sums up what I feel when I recall this movie. It was surely unlike any other horror movie re-make, sorry, RE-ENVISIONING I've encountered in a LONG LONG time. The cheap scares were bumped up, the gore was definitely there, and the sex...well, it wouldn't be a "Friday the 13th" movie without the sex. As for Jason's new "attitude" if you really wanna call it that, it's a huge plus in my book. He's more bad ass, he's more ruthless and he's definitely more imaginative with his killing 'methods'. I went in expecting another night of jumps and scares, and got just that plus the satisfaction of knowing a classic horror movie icon was finally re-done correctly. Although I hate talking' about scenes in a movie, I have to say that having Jason stick a camper in a sleeping bag and hang them over a roaring fire while they scream for their lives at the top of their lungs...it's a hugely big improvement from his usual hack and slash from his roots, needless to say there is a lot of 2009 showing in this Jason installment.
In final words of advice, I must say catch this while it's still in theaters because in my opinion it's well worth shelling over the cash, not once but twice.
Crank (2006)
Jason Statham at his best!
There are not enough words to describe "Crank", one of the best action films I've seen, ever. The story revolves around a man by the name of Chev Chelios (Jason Statham), who is injected with the "Chinese Cocktail" and in order to survive must keep his adrenaline levels at a high, all the while trying to find the man who did it to him and keeping his girlfriend from breaking up with him. This guy's got it tough!
I don't know exactly if this is the most original movie, I've not heard of another one like this. Statham gives one of his most solid performances of his career. Although it's classifiable as an Action film that doesn't exclude all the other genres involved. It has everything you could ask for in a movie, comedy, drama, action, a love story, and yes, it even includes dismemberment. May I also had it has one of the most hilarious sex scenes I've ever seen in any movie. Those who say this was just a waste of time and money, need to rethink what they've said. Look at it for what it was, a fun, uninhibited look at the life of a man out for vengeance. This movie does not disappoint, but if you're not a huge "Shoot 'Em Up" type of person then you might want to reconsider this title. For all others, sit back, grab some popcorn and hang on for a wild and crazy ride!
Cloverfield (2008)
One word to describe it all...AMAZING.
So let's get one thing straight, a movie with a hand held camera theme is going to make you nauseous, it's a given. So get over it people.
Okay on to my comment. The movie is, as I see it, a masterpiece. Sure I'll give it to most, the ending wasn't the best but I'm not going to spoil it for you guys and gals out there that have yet to see this monster of a movie. This movie not only delivered the scares, but it delivers in nearly every other emotion as well. The comedic relief was genius, the sad moments were tear jerking, the action-y moments where suspenseful unlike any other movie I've seen in a long long time. I just wish it was longer, with a run time barely under an hour and a half, it had me sitting in my seat wanting more every second that passed. The monster was absolutely brilliant and the acting in the movie is some of the best I've seen in a long time especially from a cast of really young actors.
Overall this movie was a wonderful experience and I hope Hollywood comes out with more like this. Maybe not so much hand-held cam but maybe a little more interesting and fun like "Cloverfield". I'm sure anyone who watches this will agree and say it is one of the best monster movies ever made, quite possibly the best.
