Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Subspace Rhapsody (2023)
Ignore the haters - this was BRILLIANT!
A musical episode is usually a filler episode. This one wasn't. From integrating the music into the story and making as real as other nonsensical moments in Star Trek (Spock's Brain anyone?), to the musical score, this was a top notch episode that I've watched three times already.
Those that rated this low are people who don't like musical theatre and can't appreciate a quality production. They wrote great music, they choreographed brilliantly, and the lyrics all helped moved the various plots well. And the humor was well timed and not goofy. In short, it was an unexpected pleasure for Star Trek. It helps having broadway stars on staff. Shame we couldn't get Anthony Rapp from Discovery (original star of Rent) to throw in a ballad. Lol
The show runners have taken risks this season and they have paid off. Bravo. Star Trek universe continues to grow and excite old fans and new.
Gold (2022)
Despite a Efron's Acting, this movie never pays off
The structure of the movie demands a payoff. Yet the ending is abrupt and disappointing. Efron's acting is very good despite the fact the his character is quite derivative of others films held up by a single actor - Castaway, 128 hours, etc. Yet in these films, there was an actual ending. Maybe Efron walls to the water hole referenced twice in the movie with his chunk of gold, or the sister stops the dogs from eating Efron and Efron kills the other man, or something. But the driver getting an arrow in the heart has no sense. It's as though they had no ending or money to finish the movie. Ugh!!!

Most boring pretentious attempt at an art film
I saw this on a sci-fi list. It's not much sci-fi beyond the setup. This is an art film so pretentious that it extends pointless gaps of dialogue with even more silence. The boom mike us present in many scenes at the top of the screen.
This film isn't worth examining. Philosophical but not really as much as the writer would like you to think. I suffered through this with my Russian wife (I relied mostly on English subtitles- although there's so little dialogue).
First part of film in in sepia. Zone is in color. Oz this isn't. Camera angles, lighting and more is really really bad. I suffered through this so you wouldn't have to. You are welcome.
Anyone putting this on a best of list is doing so to imply they are more than what they are. Thankfully AFI isn't as generous.

Can't get past the idea of Driver as a comedian
I'm a movie snob. Love musicals, art films, classics and more. But frankly I have never enjoyed Driver as an actor. And there was no way I could ever believe he could ever be seen as a comedian. He is one of the least funny people in showbiz. I streamed. But had I seen in a theatre, this would have been the second film I would walk out of and ask for my money back (the first being Hot Shots Part Deux. I also walked out on Grease on Ice so that's telling you where I truly see this hot mess belongs). I will certainly try to muster the energy to see this to the end (and modify my rating and review should I see fit) but it was so bad so quickly that after I said to myself W T F? I had to warn others. Consider yourself warned.
Star Trek: Discovery: New Eden (2019)
Star Trek Discovery rocks.
This is such a well-written episode with equal parts humor, adventure, and heart. The long form story telling of Discovery allows this season to slowly unfurl revealing glimpses only of the greater mystery the mysterious lights hold.
This episode shows that a greater force is pulling the strings of Discovery, Bourman and stilly while revealing a more ecumenical side of Capt Pike.
Discovery has discovered a second light and tracks it to a planet in the beta quadrant using the spore drive (you didn't think it was gone did you?). Stamits tells Tilly of his trepidation about going into the mycelium network and getting lost with his lover Hugh. Tilly, concerned for her friend, is determined to find a way to use the dark matter asteroid to replace Stamits. However, in taking a tiny piece weighing tons, Tilly is injured.
The Discovery jumps to the location to find a lost human colony that apparently was transported to the planet over two hundred years earlier. The away team learns that they are a faith based community that believes an angel brought them there.
Back in Discovery, it is learned that the radioactive rings are falling towards the planet and will destroy it with the hour.
In sickbay, Tilly is awakened by a long friend who inspires her to figure out a way to use the asteroid to save the planet. She goes to the bridge San uniform to directvthis plan.
Back in the planet, the caretaker of the church who was responsible for transmitting a distress call believes he knows that the away team is from Earth. Pike, however, has ordered that secret to stay secret.
Discovery saves the planet with cool special effects and Tilky searches the computer database for her friend... only to learn that she died when she was 16. The helper was no whom she appeared to be.
After the away team equipment was stolen, and a phased was subsequently played with by a young girl, Pike saved the girl by grabbing the phaser and hurting himself in the process. The away team took Pike into the church where they beamed back to the Discovery- but not before being seen doing so by the church elder and caretaker. The elder believed the angel had returned. The caretaker knew better.
After Pike recovered, Burnam revealed to him her own vision of the angel from the previous episode on the asteroid. After a heart-to-heart with Burns, Pike decided to reveal himself to the caretaker. This answered his questions. Pike gave him a power elk to light the church and the caretaker gave Pike a Helmut camera with video of what happened two hundred years earlier.
Back in Discovery Pike viewer the video of soldiers and others inside the church on Earth, bright lights appearing, and then the angel at the door briefly before the video stopped.
