Mission London (2010)
Hilarious
This is a hilarious movie, especially for Bulgarians. I am not sure how much of it will be comprehensible for a foreign audience, and I'm looking forward to some non-Bulgarian reviews. Anyway, there is a lot to laugh about. The film presents in a very benign, comical way many of the shortcomings and limitations of the Bulgarian mindset. The First Lady, the Ambassador, the embassy cook - the characters are fleshy and ring true, yet very funny. I also liked the cinematography. The soundtrack was cool, but a few Bulgarian songs could definitely be added for more authenticity. All in all Mission London is definitely worth watching if you want to know more about the peculiarities and daily challenges of the Bulgarian spirit.
Iztochni piesi (2009)
A humane, tender film
This is probably the best Bulgarian film in a decade. There are a couple of things that must be said about it. 1. “Eastern Plays” is first and foremost a humane story. I cannot underestimate the importance of that fact given the long-standing tradition of Bulgarian movies (and European cinematography in general) to intimidate their characters and to dissect them with horrifying bluntness. 2. More than that, the film is a really, really good contemporary narrative. The story is told in a subtle, calm and compassionate manner. 3. This film is a rare display of the importance of each and every human existence. The idea is presented without the help of complex existential constructions or intellectual roundabouts.
The Darjeeling Limited (2007)
Disappointment
This film was recommended to me and I was quite enthusiastic given the ingredients – India, voyage, spiritual uplifting.
It actually has little in common. This movie is a piece of commercialized, sweetened, Louis Vuitton ridden junk food. Do not watch that movie for inspirational purposes, other than instilling even more sympathy in your heart for directors so obviously unspiritual.
The portrayal of common Indians is cartoony at best and offensive at worst.
You can almost smell the artistic impotency even in landscape scenes.
Real disappointment.
The Dark Knight (2008)
A paradigmatic movie!
I am less thrilled by the special effects or acting excellence. What captivated my attention was the multilayer plot of the film.
What is violence? Is it funny? What is justified repentance? How do we distinguish the heroic from the humane? The Dark Knight is the first film in many years that has succeeded in sending a universal message, or rather, in asking universal questions.
Hollywood has rarely been so sophisticated and yet quite clear in its message: it is a complicated world out there, and crossing the bridge is sometimes final.
The Dark Knight is indeed an entertainment movie. Yet it has the essence and the depth of a modern classic.
