Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011)
Did nothing for me!
I guess that I am just a 'regular guy' not an 'art house guy', because this movie was terrible in my opinion. It started nowhere, it went nowhere, and it took its sweet time in getting there. While a lot of people thought that this was a great film, I am in the other camp. It was a real disappointment. Even popcorn would not help this film experience.
The use of flashback was overdone. The transitioning into flashback was so "smooth" as to be disconcerting and confusing.
Character development was a;most non-existent. The three main characters were "what you see is what you get" from the moment they appeared on the screen.
The Cult characters were a stereo-type of every cult you ever saw in a movie. You knew from the get-go what the leader would be like, and the followers as well.
In summary, I can not recommend this one at all.
Bad Ass (2012)
Don't tell my friends!
OK so I watched the whole thing...please don't tell anyone.
Basically the movie can be summed up as follows:
1. Good guy fights bad guys on bus..kicks ass.
2. Good guy becomes famous.
3. Good guy's friend gets killed.
4. Good guy hunts killer(s).
5. Good guy travels around town by bus looking for bad guys, 6. when he finds them he beats them up. Sometimes he gets beat up.
7. Good guy sorta get girl in the end.
8. The End.
That's really it. The movie consists of the same confrontation scenes repeated over and over...plus Danny getting on the bus and off the bus.
Not a good film.
They Live (1988)
Take 2 Excedrin before you watch this one!
I saw this film on its original release. I still remember that the soundtrack was so obnoxious that I really did have a headache when I left the theatre! I believe that this was "Rowdy Roddy Piper's" first, and hopefully only venture onto the screen. The poor man is an actor on the screen in the same mode as he was in the Wrestling Ring.
I see that many of the reviews here rate this film rather highly...well everyone has there own tastes in film. Honestly I would never watch this again. I still remember sitting in the theatre and wishing for the end to come ASAP.
I never walk out on films in the hope that they may redeem themselves before the end. This one does not.
Rejected (2011)
Experimental film...or inane?
I felt like the film maker was laughing at the audience for watching this "experiment" for the first 3/4 of the film. It rather ticked me off. There was nothing serious, nothing humorous, just nothing but the clock ticking off the seconds I was wasting.
BUT in the final segment of the film when the cartoonist supposedly loses it, there were some very interesting techniques used to portray those moments. I found THAT an interesting study in what could be done when thinking 'outside the box'. Unfortunately the mood had already been set for the film being a loser. But it allowed me to rate it a '3' rather than a '1' !!! I can't recommend this film.
Odjuret (2011)
Goes on my 'never again' list
I'll grant you that I am not a Foreign Film Critic, but I do watch a lot of Foreign made films, subbed, dubbed, and English. This was not a very good film in my opinion. Swedish films are typically the most difficult to digest, but this one was beyond my enjoyment.
I found it interesting that the opening scene and the final scene are the same, because I felt that it acknowledged that the film went nowhere.
Sadly for as much screen time as the main characters had, there was little or no development. Within the first few moments of each characters screen appearance you will know as much about them as you will by the end of the film. There is some change in the intensity of the main character, but the whole of his personality is laid out before you in those first few minutes.
As for "resolution". Forget about it. It IS possible to have closure in a film without it being formulaic. In fact that takes a more thoughtful script writing than just leaving the audience hanging at the end.
I can not recommend this film.
