Spend 30 hours reading the books instead
Not sure why so many reviews here say this is such a great adaptation faithful to the books. Maybe in certain aspects, but a major theme and ultimately the driving factor behind the reason to make contact with the aliens is because of what happened during the Chinese cultural revolution, and specifically to that character's family. Sorry but you can't remove the backstory of the cultural revolution and still be "faithful" to the book given that everything that happens is based on that decision. The why is important. Maybe those reviewers read a censored version of the book? Chinese censorship ruined this tv series, even before accounting for all the much too verbose and boring dialogue.

Pretty decent
This is a pretty good detective show on network tv. I think the lead actress does a great job in this role as someone who clearly has some PTSD from what happened previously that has yet to be dealt with. The beginning of the season is better than the middle so hoping it picks back up and finishes strong. People rushing on here to give it a 1/10 because they claim it is "woke" need to chill out. There's a conflict between the lead character, a white agent, and her best friend, a black FBI agent. The conflict relates to race but it's not preaching anything to anybody (so far). If this triggers you to say it's race baiting then I think it says more about you than the show. It's just a side plot and a reasonable conflict to write into the show. It's more interesting than having their conflict be over a man which obviously has been done a thousand times. Again, it's just a side plot and as long as it doesn't become the main focus and the show sticks to the detective aspect, this show is worth a watch!
