Halloween Ends (2022)
Halloween Ends: The Making of a Murderer
Like it's 2018 older brother, Ends begins with a strong opening that subverts expectations.
Props for taking this one in a different direction. Although I can already see people complaining about the lack of Michael Myers.
I didn't mind that, because I thought it allowed the movie to breath for a bit and actually allow the characters to live a normal life and let us the audience, view that.
A big weakness would be the stereotypical high school kids, though I was happy to see their demise on screen (except the girl that got ran over, thought she was done dirty).
It was odd watching a Halloween movie and not seeing much of the holiday itself. I suppose we saw enough of that in the last two films.
Thankfully there were no cringe moments like in Kills with the mob going after the escaped prisoner.
Cheers to Jamie Lee Curtis and let's hope that this truly is the end for this franchise. Even though I don't see that happening. Because we all know...
YOU CAN'T KILL THE BOOGEYMAN.
The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers: Spirit of the Ducks (2021)
THE QUACK ATTACK IS BACK, JACK!
Here it is. The episode that the fans of the original series were waiting for. And I must say, it did not disappoint. The highlight of the entire episode is most definitely the scenes with the original Ducks. The stuff with the Don't Bothers was a little weak. A lot of stuff that we could see coming and is going to cause turmoil within the team but will ultimately get resolved. However, the stuff involving all the original Ducks made up for that. We get to find out what's been going on with some beloved characters (Connie, Guy, Banks, Averman). I always thought if there was one player who would go all the way and make it to the NHL, it would be Banks, but instead we find out that he's a public defender. We had a little name drop with Charlie but nothing else for the original characters not in the episode. I truly hope we get more cameos like this.
The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers: Dusters (2021)
Gordon Bombay Skates Again!
I think we all kinda knew that the first game they play would go badly. And that's basically what happened in this episode. One of the highlights definitely has to be seeing Bombay take the ice again. We know he still loves hockey and like the first two Ducks movies, this is just character development for Bombay. They're just setting it up for him to fall in love with it again. You can tell when he was watching the game from his office, he wanted to be out there coaching those kids. Another great highlight had to be the last scene. Seeing Evan hit the ice with his teammates following. Gordon giving his nod of approval from the office and the classic theme song playing. Ah...goosebumps. And it's only episode 2. Can't wait for next Friday.
The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers: Game On (2021)
The MIghty Ducks Meets The Little Giants
It's been 25 years since we've last seen The Mighty Ducks on screen. And I thought the way that they started the first episode was a great nod to the original series. We see a zamboni.with a nice little easter egg Hendrix sponsor logo on it. We also see the new Ducks logo on the center ice and the scoreboard also with a Hendrix logo on it. For anyone that recalls D2, you'll get the reference. Then that iconic Ducks theme song starts to play. This is when we meet our main characters of the new series Evan, played by. Brady Noon and his mom Alex, played by Lauren Graham. To cut to the chase, Evan gets cut by the team. Him mom makes a scene and then tells her son that they should form their own team. If anyone has ever seen the 1994 football kids film The Little Giants, it's very much that storyline. But it works. We see Evan recruit a ragtag team of kids who barely know how to skate. Meanwhile we see Alex trying to find an arena where they can play. This is where Coach (although not anymore) Gordon Bombay makes his first appearance. He manages a rundown ice rink. He hates hockey. He needs the money. So the biggest question is- Why does Gordon now hate hockey? What happened over the last 25 years? I have to imagine it's what has become of the Mighty Ducks symbol in this universe. They are now the powerhouse (like the Hawks in the first movie). And Bombay has maybe become a little salty over this. We will obviously find out more throughout the season. Now I have to talk about one particular kid that they recruit. It's the kid that they want to play the goalie. His name is. Koobler, but you could almost call him Goldberg Jr. Seriously, did this actor not look like Shaun Weiss aka Greg Goldberg when he was a kid. And to top it off, he's going to be the goalie. I thought that was a great nod. There were some other good little Easter eggs throughout this episode. We already mentioned Hendrix. In Bombay's office we see a photo of him at the beginning of D2, when he was playing minor hockey with the Waves. At the end of the episode we see the other teams in the league, which is a callback to the first film. We have the Hawks, the original powerhouse. There are also the Cardinals, another team we saw in the first film. Another Easter egg that I think will play bigger later on in the series, is where Alex works. We find out that she is a paralegal. Although it's not mentioned, in the credits, one of the characters goes by the last name Ducksworth. This is also a callback to the first film, Ducksworth was the name of the law office that Gordon worked at. So most likely it's the same office that Alex works at. I think they are trying to set up a connection between Alex and Gordon. As far as the new kids, I think they have a fun group of youngsters. My favorite so far has to be the podcast host Nick. He's funny and brings that lovable loser spirit to the show. Just like the original trilogy, the show is putting together a diverse group of kids to round out the team. Though so far we only have seven kids on the team, don't be surprised to see more kids join throughout. As a huge fan of the original trilogy, I was so skeptical about a new show. But I most say, after one episode, I like where this show is heading.
Under the Silver Lake (2018)
If Hitchcock, Lynch, and Linklater had a baby
Going into this film, I was a huge fan of David Robert Mitchell. But because he was only a one hit wonder coming into this, I was skeptical.
I will say this- this film is not for everyone. I can see it being a very polarizing movie. You either love it or you hate it. And for me, I loved it. Nobody does David Lynch as well as Lynch. But this film does the surreal feeling so well. Diving down the rabbit hole of the unknown.
This film does leave me with many questions of certain things that were not answered (ex: what happened to the Owl's Kiss?).
Once again, Mitchell left me with a film that is going to stick with me for a while. Just like with It Follows, Under the Silver Lake will be something I'm going to think about for days to come.
Creepshow (2019)
Like Watching Really Good Student Films
Let me start off by saying, my only familiarity with the Creepshow franchise, was with Creepshow 2.
I remember watching this on AMC back in the day, and the segment that I remember the most was The Raft.
It wasn't until Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood announced that it was doing a Creepshow house. I remember going to a panel in which Greg Nicotero talked about how the house would be a hybrid of the original 1982 George A. Romero film as well as the new Shudder series.
So my first impression of the show was not even watching the show. It was going through the house. And I LOVED IT! I watched the show when it premiered and enjoyed it tremendously.
I started off by watching episode 2-Bad Wolf Down/The Finger. The reason being that one of the rooms in the HHN house was from Bad Wolf Down. I could tell their was not a ton of money. During the interiors of The Finger, the living room area definitely looked like a set on a sound stage.
It felt as if I was watching a student film. Meaning I could tell it was a set. But because the storytelling and acting was so well done, I didn't care. What they lack in set design, they make up with practical effects. The Creature from Gray Matter, Bob from The Finger, and Champy from By the Silver Water of Lake Champlain in particular.
Also a shoutout to the effects in The Man in the Suitcase. Very well done.
This is where having a pro like Greg Nicotero and his team and KNB works out well.
My favorite episode (and I think going by ratings, most everyone's favorite) was episode 3-All Hallow's Eve/The Man in the Suitcase.
All Hallow's Eve reminded me of It or Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. It had a nice mystery aspect that kept you wondering where it was going. This was by far my favorite segment of the show.
For the most part, each segment was very good. A few missed the landing for me (Lydia Layne's Better Half, Night of the Paw). Especially Night of the Paw. Too long.
Overall, I loved this show. I've watched it maybe half a dozen times by now. I can't wait for season 2 and I heard that they already announced season 3.
As long as Nicotero is on board and calling the shots, I'm all in.
Host (2020)
Unfriended meets Paranormal Activity
First off, I was 100% skeptical of this film going in.
The word gimmick came to mind. A 56 minute long film shot during quarantine over Zoom. From a critique standpoint, it seemed like a quick cash grab, trying to push a product out for streaming services thirsty for content.
From a filmmaker standpoint, I said "Damn, this should have been me". When this all started back in March, one of the first things to pop in my head wasn't stocking up on water or ramen noodles. It was making a feature film with all this time on my hand.
What I ended up with was a couple of made for quarantine fest short films starring myself. So when I first heard about this project a few days ago, one of my first thoughts was "Wow, someone actually did it".
Yesterday, I decided to check it out and all I can say is wow, shockingly surprised (emphasis on shock).
Immediately I was reminded of Unfriended: Dark Web. A 2018 film that I highly enjoyed. It took a while to get into a film that was already considered short as a feature. It would say by 20 minutes into this, that's when things took off. And when it takes off, it didn't stop.
Mixing a blend of Unfriended meets Paranormal Activity, one of the things this film does extremely well is the use of subtlety.
One factor that plays well with this film is that there is no traditional soundtrack that would normally be used to emphasize a jumpscare. Because without that in this film, it made it even more scary. The one thing that stuck with me the most is that idea of "Did I just see that in the background?".
It is of course when the young female leads of this film think they are safe (even though you no that's not the case), when that use of subtlety is used the best. From that moment, this suspense train goes full speed with no intent on slowing down until the final minute.
I am still extremely impressed on how well the effects for this film came out. I am still wondering with the limitations that the filmmakers had, how they did some of this stuff.
Usually in the expectations vs. reality of filmmaking, it's the expectations in your head as a filmmaker that you want big budget Marvel like special effects, and it's the reality that you end up with more or less a B movie straight to DVD starring Eric Roberts and Michael Madsen special effects.
My point is, in the rare occasion of small style filmmaking, this film pulls off reality beating expectations. I can't imagine the amount of patience the director had to of had with his cast and crew when trying to coordinate all of this.
Overall, I was highly impressed with this film, giving it a 9/10 on IMDB. I definitely recommend checking it out, especially at night with the lights off. I watched it during the day with lights on and was still freaked out.
Shudder is easily becoming the go to for quality content in the horror genre. They definitely take an artistic approach with their choices and are not just about quick cash grabs.
Like A24, they are growing as a big player in this market and I am very excited to see where they go from here.
Terminator Salvation (2009)
Watch it as it's own
Before viewing the film "Terminator:Salvation", there are a few things that you need to take into consideration(especially big fans). One of them being that this may be considered the fourth in the franchise, but its really its own movie. This movie has been bad mouthed from day one. It seems that so many films produced today are remakes, based off books, or taken from older franchises. So why does this one take more of the cake than others. I saw this movie in theaters and enjoyed it very much, and yes I am a fan of the series. McG deserves much more credit than what he got. This is not the best and not the worst, it is what it is. A fun, load, and rip roaring flick.P.S- You want bad, go watch the Twilight series. That movie makes money off of selling sex(Have some goofy looking kid play Edward and see how ya' do, just saying).
Casablanca (1942)
Untouchable
Casablanca is a prime example of classic Hollywood. With your stars like Bogie and Bergmann, along with great writing, directing, and unforgettable lines, it makes for a movie that none other can compare to. This movie does not need big money effects or action sequences. The acting along will make you fall in love with this classic. It's a story of fate and romance, with a classic ending to die for. I may have been born many many years after, but it's a film that any generation can relate to. If there was ever a list of the top 10 movies never to be considered for a remake, Casablance would be there. Watch this film if you're a fan of the good old days and love a great production and don't forget, "Here's looking at you, kid".
The Office: Niagara: Part 1 (2009)
Not your normal Office episode
I was very excited for this episode of the office. Its the one that many of the fans have been waiting for, Jim and Pams wedding. The first 3/4 of the episode if pretty much good old goofy Office style. Michael and Dwights funny antics, laugh out load jokes, and Andy's unfortunate injury. Only it was the last quarter of the episode that stood out from any other Office episode ever. From the dancing in the aisle by the Office employees to the amazing shots of Jim and Pam on the Maid Of The Mist. They all tied in well and made this possibly one of the most unforgettable moments in the shows history. I really felt that the crew members hit the target with this and made it memorable, especially for the true fans. Then to cap it off, Michael hooks up with a certain someone's mother which should make the rest of this season great!
