Appaloosa (2008)
a story beautifully told...one frame at a time
It's a western, about good guys and bad ones. No surprise there. It's a story about love. No surprise there either. It's a story about friendship. Nothing to rock the familiar or stand out above a thousand other story lines we have seen over and over again.
However, the movie stands out in how it connects all the three. It stands out in the superb acting, in wonderful play of emotions and in how we witness what it means to be good, to be in love and to be a true friend. You will connect to the characters here in how strong they are and yet how frail they are. It will remind you how things are rarely in black and white and more often that not in shades of gray.
It's been a while since I have seen a movie like this.
Aoki Ôkami: chi hate umi tsukiru made (2007)
Great movie but not for everyone
Let me start by telling you some great reasons NOT to watch this movie. If you are looking for mindless violence, superbly choreographed action sequences, historical accuracy, big budget movie feel or fast paced narration, then avoid this movie. It offers you none of these.
What this movie does have is a good story line, compelling narration that involves the audience, play of human emotions and great acting. It is memorable because of all these factors.
Genghis Khan in real life was a ruthless man and unlikely to posses any of the stellar qualities ascribed to him in this movie. But that is the creative license we must allow film makers to have. Otherwise it would be drab world where all movies are documentaries.
If you want to know about the real Genghis Khan, read a book.If you want to be immersed in good story telling, then watch this movie.
City of Ember (2008)
Murdered a potentially good story
This movie had a lot of potential, but blew it all away, frame by intolerable frame. The rather intriguing story line was run over by poor script writing - the intriguing soon became the absurd.
I went to watch this movie because Bill Muray was in it and I have yet to see a disappointing movie with Murray in it. Well, as they say, there's always a first time.
The cast did an average job, given the burden of shoddy story telling they had to carry.
On the whole unless you are going through a particularly masochistic phase of life, please avoid this movie.
