While the original story is an absolute 10/10, the movie just drags and is just totally predictable.
The cast is good at looking cute and relatable but are as shallow as they can get. There's virtually no character development, the sidestories go nowhere and there's never anything interesting added to the original story. However, we all love dogs so it's hard to even notice these flaws while you look at this quiet Akita being cute. However, it seems the director doesn't know dogs either. For example, the Akita fails to recognize the scent of an important character at one scene. The characters talk to him but the body language doesn't match what they hear as a reply. It's also implied that the dog is somehowe special and loyal to Gere, but for some reason forgot about his previous owner. As soon as you start thinking, every scene falls appart.
By the first part of the film I was ready to give it a 3/10, but the ending is actually effective despite the poor execution. For example, there's a scene with a tree over the years. There's this dramatic wind that makes it really work, but on every single other instance you can tell there's absolutely no wind on that place which really breaks the immersion. Either way, I was in tears by the end despite predicting it all so I guess it earned 2 points back.
All in all, most of the movie was a complete waste of time. If you wanna cry, just skip to the end.
