Leila (2019)
Lot to hate but still a brave effort
First off...Kudos to the makers to imagine the first Indian dystopian drama. Congratulations. Hope better and more stories come after this from other creators.
Now as pointed out by other reviewers, it is pretty depressing to watch earlier on. Especially episodes 1-3. Later it just becomes plain boring. The character arch remain plateued. The writing becomes lazy. Too many coincidences, too many lucky breaks and finally a Siddharth who probably does the most monochromatic, boring and poorly written role of his lifetime. It's unclear what his motivations are, dialogues are confusing and poorly written (probably by a non native hindi speaker) and then he just becomes annoying after sometime.
I think Netflix india needs to write better cop roles- After sartaj from sacred games who seemed to get caught everywhere, Bhanu played by Siddharth is just plain bore.
Huma qureshi acts well and sinks into the role but gets little support from the screenplay. Plots become convenient and she catches one lucky break after another which is so hard to believe.
Some people say that it's anti-hindu and xenophobic. While I can see why some people would perceive that , I don't believe that the makers had any ulterior motive behind this. I would commend them for creating this while being well aware that they will face criticism.
I hope given the low ratings, it would not deter other filmmakers to explore this genre. We should celebrate this series as a kickoff rather than dumping it by imposing our political judgement. It's good for the arts to create conversation which I think this series has surely succeeded in.
Lady in the Water (2006)
Don't know why it is so under- rated?
I watched this movie when I was in India and I must say I really enjoyed it. The problem probably was that it was marketed as a horror film which it is not. It is an excellent fantasy film at par with many the recent fantasies....and certainly far more better than Twilight. I guess people dumped the movie in peer pressure as there was this phase when dumping Shyamalan was a fad. His worst movie was Avatar... certainly not this one. I would rate it better than "The sign" or "Unbreakable". Watch this movie and decide for yourself whether its good or not. I wrote this review as I did not see any other review. I do believe that in future this movie might be hailed as one of the best modern fantasies.
