Never Let Me Go (2010)
Beautiful tragedy
A "Beautiful tragedy", but it does not look like a tragedy. It looks like an impressionist painting with an underlying sadness, growing up slowly to an overwhelming distress. It's one of the best movie I've seen in the past years. The acting, the rhythm, the beautiful and subtle photography, the atmosphere, everything is in its place. The casting of Carey Mulligan seems obvious. She generates so much empathy that we feel deeply involved in the story. Andrew Garfield shows also the adequate level of fragility without falling into a caricature. I'm less convinced with Keira Nightley's performance. I would advise with no restraint this movie but with a little of bad conscience, because I was really devastated at the end...
Les mille merveilles de l'univers (1997)
Graal quest: finding the worst
If you are, like me, addicted to the perverted pleasure of watching very very bad movies, don't miss that one. Everything is pathetic. Everything. What is fascinating in that kind of masterpiece is: - "Is it on purpose?", - "How did they get the money to do that?", - "What was the satanic deal that made the actors get trapped?" - "Are they insane?", - "Am I insane enjoying this?".
I've just been a bit deceived by Féodor Atkine who seems to be interested in his role ans played eventually quite well...
If you want to pull Tcheky Karyo or Julie Delpy's leg, don't hesitate: talk about "les Miller merveilles de l'univers".
Beowulf, my favorite worst movie, has found its master.
Janis et John (2003)
an expected nice comedy becoming a cult movie
The first time I watched this movie, I thought it was a good surprise as I'd never heard about it before: a funny comedy, with good actors and a creative director. But something in that film attracted me to watch it again (what I rarely do) and I really felt in love with it. Sergi Lopez, Francois Cluzet and Marie Trintigant are amazing: in an absurd situation, with extreme characters (especially Cluzet), they are more than credible. Sergi Lopez performance is unique: a subtle equilibrium between burlesque and tragedy.
The text is extremely well written and precise. Technically, the movie is very creative (I'm waiting for the next Benchetrit work).
Each time I see this movie, I love it more. rating: 10/10 as it is a cult movie to me
