Yellowstone (2018)
The final frontier?!? Be careful what you ask for.
A dope-opera of the lowest kind - full of unhappy people going full force to make their lives even MORE unhappy. Nothing positive here and I'm not talking about drooling mind mushed la la la la delusional faux joy, I mean real built on actions that better one's life bringing deserved pride. I thought Costner had really missed the point in Open Range, but sadly he seems to have surpassed that with this waste of electrons.
I've had the fantastic joy of knowing a real cowboy that honored his land and lived as he felt was best for himself and family (who didn't appreciate the gifts he bestowed). His efforts were always for his benefit at HIS 'expense'. He never took from others or his land without decent 'payment' that REpaid and then some. He was an endangered species, as is the 'world we live in' portrayed by this Hollyweird dirge drama.
You Go to My Head (2017)
Too artsy and lacks story
The high ratings reviews must be done by not regular movie viewers! It was a nature/art video with cover of 'love' story. Boring pace, NO script to speak of and hard to stay with long enough to even find out anything about characters falling in love.
Made me wonder if the industry is returning to 'silent films' only in color?
Captain Fantastic (2016)
Neo hippie mis-drama
While the cast did great jobs, the story is too 'black-white' with dash of control freak spiced with 'good intentions'. There were so many easy alternatives that such an intelligent man could have done that would have honored his kids better. It took a miscalculation that could have easily ended in tragedy to wise him up to the fact that what all of his family had been living was his dream, not for their real benefit.
Spoiler - the place they ended up living was where they should have always been - a more in balance yet child friendly and supportive.
Ford v Ferrari (2019)
Finishes second behind Rush
Good as the cast is and even racing scenes, this movie doesn't have as good a script or heart of a story as Rush did. With a title that hints at comparison or even more competition for the story, it doesn't deliver that. It would have been better titled Shelby & Miles v. Ford.
Going in Style (2017)
Single malt in a paper cup
Great cast, decent 'heist' potential, but oh what a DUD of a movie. Script - flat (written by 3rd rate TV writer?!?), POOR directing and just plain UNbelievable. So many important issues mentioned but only clichés offered for resolution. Doesn't anyone else think that a retired person with a mortgage is a sitting duck for pension implosion?!? Like duh!!
The Hero (2017)
Hero?!? only for social warriors!!
We like Sam Elliot and he does well with this role, but not as well as a similar role in Off The Map.
There was SO MUCH MORE that this story line had to offer but instead the director relied on artsy and scenery shots. We felt our time was wasted watching this.
Another thing that disappointed was how the 'back story' didn't clue in and in fact discounted westerns! The awards ceremony audience echoed this in how it appeared 'aged and clueless but adoring in what seemed a mindless way'. May all the great Hollywood cowboys haunt the creators of this (waste of) film.
Stretchin' to the Classics (1991)
Great of 'old classics' like me!
I am so NOT a fan of this guy. However this one video is a wonderful and refreshing easy yet effective one. My hubby and I benefit from it whenever we do it. Its simple and pleasantly paced not to mention the lovely music. Richard really never says ONE word either. Ahhhh heaven!
Did he ever make another along this line? It would be fabulous if there were alternative music/motions to rotate thru.
Unfortunately all we have it in is VHS format. Would LOVE to have a DVD copy but so far can't find one. Was this ever updated in DVD format? The VHS format is grainy and hard to follow. Plus the sound is not as lovely as it could be on DVD.
Sands of the Kalahari (1965)
Needs to be released!!
Although I haven't seen the movie in years, I will NEVER forget it. I do have the book, which is also an excellent read, but so want to see the movie again.
This movie has impact in spades. It isn't a scary movie as such, but some scenes will raise the hairs on the back of your neck. The scenery enhances the isolation and challenge of returning to a world the stranded people know. Stuart Whitman IS O'Brien and a hunk to boot. Susannah York plays her part deliciously and the only muff up was casting Theodore Bikel as the 'doctor' (PhD. not MD). Not that he didn't play a good role, its more because the story would have been even richer if an American black had been used per the book.
Here's hoping that this will be released soon! With Susannah York's recent passing, I can't think of a better tribute to her than that.
Other People's Money (1991)
Sentiment VS reality
Besides this being entertaining to watch De Vito and Penelope have fun dancing around a battle of the sexes all the while maintaining a serious business deal, this movie is very much UNDER rated as the morality play it is. Frank Capra couldn't have been better at creating the character Gregory Peck plays. And Danny DeVito was fabulous as someone you want to hate, but can't quite bring yourself to. His character is just too true to itself as a business man with a heart (for those that look beyond the initial image that his character has to get each time someone first meets this 'Wall Street giant'). This is a morality play that entertains too. In fact I consider this a 'litmus test' of how FREE market the attitude of a person viewing it is. De Vito's stockholders speech is something that should be taught in every economics and business class. The fact that it isn't and probably never will be is a reflection of why the U$A is fast sinking from its 1st class nation/economic status.
The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing (1973)
Melodrama 'spoof'
It amazes me how many people see this movie as a B grade western! I found it to be an excellent adaptation of a decent western genre book that happened to have been written by a WOMAN. The casting could not have been more perfect in that each person played their character so well. And the characters were a 'spoof' at the cliché of melodrama types that most westerns portray anyway. This is a story about how people LIE to themselves and end up not only ruining their own lives, but harming those near them too. And how honesty comes hard and maybe late, but can come before one dies. The only flaw of the movie is that it didn't tell the full tale of Cat Dancing and the tragedy that befell her, Burt's character and their children's lives. On the other hand, I liked the movie ending better than the book's.
