Extremely disappointing
10 June 2023
I figured with an IMDB rating of 7.1 this would be decent. Briefly checking out the trailer, it looked like some mindless action fun mixed with some comedy, and a good way to spend the evening but wow, it REALLY was mindless. I really struggled to finish watching this because of how disappointing it was. Absolutely nothing made sense, you truly have to suspend your belief a lot, like way more than you would with other movies, for it to be anywhere near "believable" and to be able to get into and enjoy the story. I'm not sure what this says about the general population today when the majority of people actually seemed to have enjoyed this. All in all it felt like it was made for 12 year olds.

Biutiful (2010)

Heavy
28 August 2022
Far from a feel-good movie, 'Biutiful' is heavy and somewhat depressive. It's in the same realm of movies as 'Good Time', 'Uncut gems' or 'Requiem for a Dream' but way less intense and far slower. It contains good acting and a hard hitting realness of human suffering and perseverance. However, the story wasn't interesting or engaging enough to make me consider it a worthwhile movie experience. It definitely felt too long with a 2 hour 20 minute duration. Overall decent movie but could have provided a lot more. I recommend watching Alejandro Iñárritu's other films such as 'Amores perros' or '21 Grams' instead, as they are somewhat similar but more engaging.

Made for kids
5 April 2021
As a young adult myself, this felt like it was made for 4-10 year olds.

The little humor that it contained was very childlike and often reminiscent of old cartoon slapstick humor.

The cupcake minions were way too similar to the yellow minions from Despicable me. The villain's evil plan was quite cliché as well.

The story was unengaging and not so memorable. I didn't really like any of the main characters, and the obstacles they came across were somehow overcome very easily.

The only redeeming factor was that it was usually aesthetically pleasing, and with a somewhat immersive world.

Definitely made for kids.

More clever and realistic than the average comedy
29 December 2020
I thought this movie was great. The vibe it creates isn't always the most happy one though, it's largely about a struggling relationship and very awkward situations during a family vacation. It still has funny moments though, even during intense scenes where the music suggests something completely different than laughing.

Aquaman (2018)

Superhero movie
30 December 2018
Aquaman is ok. Fairly formulaic, sprinkled with some clichés. Some cool CGI and visuals. Some cringy lines and acting, although overall decent acting. Fairly average superhero movie of the 2010s. Better than Justice League at least, which was a relief. I'd say early teenagers would enjoy this film the most of any demographic.

Stunning visuals, but
8 October 2017
Visually this movie is absolutely stunning. The sound design that went along with it was terrific as well. It really sucks you into this futuristic world. The movie is just really well made.

Story-wise it was quite good as well.

The pacing however is too slow, and the movie feels like it goes on a bit too long.

Bottom line: I really enjoyed this movie but felt it was a bit too slow. 7/10

Great movie
12 September 2017
I saw this movie with expectations of a very typical Hollywood formula movie. Despite the beginning being a bit odd and (unintentionally?) humorous, the rest of the movie was engaging, intriguing, and unique. Having watched literally 2000+ movies, I really enjoyed the unpredictability of the story and not knowing where it was leading. The pacing was great and kept me engaged. L was a very entertaining character as well.

All in all I really enjoyed this movie and I would surely see it again.

PS, I have never seen any of the original anime, and I've seen a lot of people complain that they changed the story and characters etc, but honestly these people rating the movie 1/10 for this reason just seem pathetic.

Disappointing..
14 July 2017
I'm really surprised by the high rating. I did not enjoy this movie at all.

The scenes involving the main character and two other girls were painstakingly bad and unrealistic. I'm incredibly tired of Hollywood misrepresenting what the human courting process really looks like, and this movie gives a very clear example of what it does not look like. Like come on, the guy acts like the most shy and uncertain kid in the world and somehow the girls make all of the advances? Wake up.. who the hell let this stuff slide?

It didn't really seem like a comedy. I honestly can't recall laughing, although I do admit it was slightly entertaining at times.

It really felt like this movie was made for teenagers (like most movies these days.. unfortunately). If you're outside of this demographic you probably will not enjoy it that much.

I didn't enjoy the "joke" of a white character bringing up the issue of the N word and how he uses it in a well intentioned manner just like the other characters, but despite it he is slapped for a second time when saying it, resulting in the hysterical laughing of the other characters. Was this honestly supposed to be funny? The white character actually had a good point. Either way it seemed incredibly racist.

The one thing I liked about this movie was the music. That was like the one silver lining. I do not recommend this movie.

A great and important documentary
29 July 2016
I've had this movie on my watchlist for a while and just now got around to watching it, and boy am I glad that I did.

This was really a fascinating and rich documentary. It is about medical industry technologies in relation to heart attacks and the developments that have been made the past 20 years, specifically a few types of technologies.

Helpful technologies are suppressed, due to a mixture of ignorance, greed, and blind faith in old knowledge among those wielding the power of change in the medical community.

Luckily over the years these new forms of heart attack prevention and treatments have been widely accepted and adopted, due to various occurrences which are described in the movie.

At times the movie will present you with real 911 calls, to solidify the chilling reality of these sudden and deadly heart attacks that can change your life forever, or even worse, take it away.

One peeve that I had with the movie was that it didn't go into details on what kind of nutrition would be helpful in preventing heart attacks. The food you consume and choose to fuel your body with definitely plays a large role in the occurrences, so it was a shame to not hear anything about it. I understand of course that the movie would like to focus on the story of these medical technologies, but still, they could have dedicated a few minutes to nutrition in my opinion.

I saw another review here stating that the movie was highly opposed to sterns, but I did not get that impression at all. Rather I think it was being critical of the fact that a small amount of people were making incredibly large sums of money due to the invention and the operation of inserting them. The review I am referring to is actually incredibly suspect and strangely negative, which makes me think of one of the ignorant and misled persons interviewed in the movie. The author of that review actually created his/her account exactly 11 months ago when the review was written, and has not made any reviews since then... Not very surprising.

Face Off (2011–2018)

Fascinating and awesome artwork at times, but turns into a shady reality show in the second season.
1 February 2013
The first season was awesome. It felt so much better than the typical reality show with drama and talking behind peoples back, with almost exclusive focus on the art form, which was really refreshing.

In the second season things take a bad turn. The second episode begins by showing a tiny well edited sequence where it is made to appear that one of the models are drowning as they are made to submerge in water, and that an ambulance is needed. This is repeated before a break, and finally In the end we find that this.. does not happen at all. Wtf? At the very end however we find that on the NEXT episode an ambulance is needed, for who the hell knows what. In addition all the contestants seem over the top with their personalities, creating lots of drama with some big egos which becomes a big part of the show.

I guess these guys just did what it took to get better ratings, choosing some talented artists with strong personalities that would conflict, and deceiving you to keep you interested and keep watching the show. Sorry but this sort of ruined the show for me, but that's me. I bet a lot of people would enjoy it nonetheless
