Dakota Skye (2008)
Truthful film
I just saw this movie at the Phoenix film festival where it won the award for best screenplay. The writing was very deserving of the award. The story is terrific and the dialogue very believable. The apathy and cynicism she has developed over the years with her ability to see through the lies of others plays very well and is very relatable because we have all felt that way at some point in our lives when we have seen through a lie that we had once believed in. The story is a very realistic exploration of the meaning and definition of truth and what role it plays in our lives. All of the actors were of believable age as well, which is often hard to find in a film involving high school age characters. Terrific movie well worth seeing and I hope it makes it into wider distribution.
The Art of Travel (2008)
See this movie!
I saw this at the Phoenix Film Festival in April and thought it was great. I didn't know much about it going into the theater but it is really a great story. If you are bitten by the travel bug or lived abroad for any length of time you will definitely relate to the plot as it concerns a young man's journey of self-discovery as he travels throughout south America. Wonderful scenery and some very comic moments which everyone can enjoy, especially if you have traveled to some less then savory cities (hotel bathrooms in Nicaragua were hilarious). There was also a wonderful montage set to Kermit the Frog's "Rainbow Connection", an odd but somehow perfect choice. Befitting the plot, the depth of the characters grew over the course of the movie and the second half seemed better than the first. Fabulous ending as well, which I won't spoil for you. Go see it at a festival near you or when it comes out in theaters in the future!
