Damsel (2024)

Fell flat

Warning: Spoilers
I almost never write reviews, but this one was so bad, I had to. The characters were all so one-dimensional. You barely get to know any of them, so it's difficult to really care for anyone.

(spoiler part) It felt like Game of Thrones lite to me... down to the young heiress who brings her dragon to the city to burn everyone alive as punishment, but without any real character development.

The cinematography was really good which is why I kept a few stars; and it had an A-list cast which I was really excited about (I love Robin Wright and Angela Bassett). But those 2 had maybe 5 minutes of screen time. Such a waste of 2 hours. I will never be watching again.

A fun watch
24 May 2022
I honestly don't understand why everyone is rating this show as poorly as they are. Sure, it's not the most believable thing on the planet, but in this day and age, what is? I will admit, it was a little hard for me to believe that Queen Latifah's character is supposed to be a former "best of the best" spy/assassin, but I'm also able to look past that and just enjoy the show for what it is. It's a fun watch and the stories are interesting to me. I also like the relationship between the main character, her aunt, and her daughter. No, this probably isn't going to win any awards, but I have thoroughly enjoyed it!

Really fun movie
6 July 2021
This was all in all a really fun movie. I usually hate movies that deal with time travel, but they explained a scenario that was at least plausible for why they could only jump between those 2 points in time. I'm also not usually a fan of alien movies, but for some reason, I really liked this one...can't even pinpoint why exactly. I think it balanced the alien screen time well so that wasn't what you were watching 100% of the time. I've seen a few reviews mention that it felt like an 80s or 90s action movie and I feel like that is spot on - maybe that's why I liked it so much, because 80s and 90s action movies are still some of the best in my opinion. It also felt like we were dealing with real everyday people and emotions and there was actually an underlying family storyline, which I liked.

The only part for me that felt disjointed was the last ~40 minutes. I won't say specifics so as not to include spoilers, but it felt like a different movie at that point. It felt like they could have taken that and made a sequel VERY easily. The movie up to that point was explained in a plausible enough way that I was forgiving of it, but the "2nd Act" if you will, had way more plot holes and had the characters doing things that didn't make any sense and frankly were kind of stupid.

BUT, that being said, I'll totally watch it again. My husband absolutely loved it, and was caught multiple times while watching it saying "this movie is so cool!". And he liked it so much that he invited friends over to watch it a 2nd time, the day after we first watched it. Overall, very enjoyable. Perfect blend of action, humor, and heart. I'd definitely recommend!

What did I just watch?
6 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I'm a sucker for any movie that deals with superpowers, so I gave it a shot. She goes from one entity that cannot be trusted, to another entity that cannot be trusted, to yet another entity that the movie implies may also not be able to be trusted, yet she trusts that one without question in the end... At one point, the bad guy has a helicopter land/explode on him, yet he emerges virtually unscathed. I also did not feel the chemistry at ALL between the two main characters. I finished the movie feeling like I'd just lost 2 hours of my life.

A great movie and great message
27 January 2019
For context, my father has been paralyzed nearly my entire life (he was hit by a drunk driver when I was a baby). I hate how so many movies these days seem to give the message of "if you're paralyzed, it's better for everyone if you just die", but this is not one of those movies at all, and I love it.

Sure, it shows the struggles and pains that come from a major disability, but it also shows the fun and joy that can still be had regardless of your level of mobility. It shows that your friends and family still love and care about you regardless. Really, it's a story of how the main character learns to find joy in his life despite his circumstances.

I love this message so much because you know what? I will *always* choose to have a paralyzed dad than no dad at all. I'm in my thirties now and my dad has been there for nearly every major event of my life. And yes, he even "danced" with me at my wedding. We made it work.

Paralysis does not mean life must end. And the best part of this movie? It's based on a true story, which makes it even better. I highly recommend it.

Fuller House (2016–2020)
9/10
Don't listen to the critics - check it out for yourself
27 February 2016
Before I started watching Fuller House, I read a bunch of reviews and was so disappointed that it was getting ripped to shreds that I almost didn't give it a chance, but curiosity got the best of me and I started watching. To echo some of the other reviewers, yes, the first episode is incredibly cheesy and feels more like an homage to the old cast than an introduction to a new show, but after just the main cast of Fuller House is left, I found it actually quite fantastic.

Some say that it's just rehashing the original show and in a lot of ways, they *have* taken an extremely similar storyline, but beyond that it is totally its own. But what I absolutely love about it is that it feels like a 90s sitcom. I grew up watching Full House, Boy Meets World, Family Matters, etc., and I miss all of those shows. When Girl Meets World came out, I was excited for that one also, but was disappointed in how it turned out. However, Fuller House can stand on its own two legs without their Full House background and I have been very pleasantly surprised.

Nowadays there really isn't much family friendly material on TV; there are very few shows that aren't filled with innuendo, language, sex, and so on. But Fuller House stays true to the Full House values and while it may be cheesy at times, each episode has a moral to the story where someone learned something and is better for having learned it. It teaches the audience what's really important in life and how much families really matter.

If you're looking for a Modern Family type of show, you will not find that in Fuller House, but if you're missing the sitcoms of the 90s that you could comfortably watch with your whole family, you will love Fuller House.
