Aside from Ep 6, which was carried by Kirby Howell-Baptiste's rather delightful acting of a touching storyline, I really struggled to watch this series.
For me, the biggest issue was Tom Sturridge. He really looked out of his comfort zone. Like a kid in a grown-up environment for the first time. What's with the endless pouting? I rather hoped his helm would come to the rescuse once he'd recovered it but like the plot, it rather disappeared. I'm not familiar with his other roles, but won't be rushing to stream those on the strength of this performance.
The human characters' rather easy acceptance of the supernatural, is the second elephant in the room. I appreciate this is a fantasy series, but those human characters aren't watching it so shouldn't be giving in to fantasy so blissfully IMO.
Finally, and this is perhaps my own personal failing rather than a fair critique, the casting of so many comedians rather made me feel I was watching a spoof, and that's rarely a good thing.
3* from 10 and 2 of those are for episode 6. The rest really is that bad.
