Beautiful and Fascinating Look at the Moken Culture
17 July 2022
Sometimes film, especially documentary film, serves a higher purpose. It can preserve and archive a culture. It can capture a moment and place and hold it timelessly for future generations to learn and enjoy.

Sailing a Sinking Sea is a fascinating look at the Moken people of the Oceans between Malaysia and Thailand. They are a people who live on the sea, in boats, and come to land only occasionally. I found their folklore, their creation myth and stories of mermaids and magic, to be the most interesting part of this documentary.

It is beautifully filmed and the stories of the people and their lives are engaging. Olivia Wyatt has created something meaningful that is a contribution to the archives of world cultures.

An Artistic Film Full of Color, Short on Substance
12 July 2022
While visually enjoyable, there is not much substance to this short video postcard film. Everything is so clean, and colorful, and neat and throughout most of the film everyone seems so content and happy that it feels as if it were shot through a figurative rose-colored lens.

The movie notes claim that this film follows the story of a girl living her daily life in the Sudan, but I could not follow any narrative in the film at all--only colorful eye candy with no substance.

This is another of the LOST Alice Comedies shorts created by Walt Disney before Mickey Mouse. There are no known copies of this film surviving. There are a few screen shots from this film, and a picture of the poster promoting the short. If you have seen this film, DIsney Archives wants to talk to you.

Really, Really Bad...but interesting in a way
2 June 2020
If you are watching this movie to be entertained or as a Christmas movie. Run away, do not walk, run. It is a bad movie. It is preachy, and lacks humor, plot, or any believable researched historical lessons. It is propaganda and spin. Some of the stories have bits and pieces of truth here and there, but it is used mainly to further preach and push the agenda of Liberty University and Kirk Camron.

So why did I not give it a 1 like many of the reviews I am reading. Well, I found it interesting, and here is why. The evangelical Christian movement is excreting influence unlike any time in its history in our daily and political lives. I find it interesting to learn how and what they are thinking, how they try to twist and rewrite history, and how the entire spin machine works. Therefore, a TWO.

Chain Reaction
19 November 2004
OK, I liked the movie--it was a good piece of science fiction. But I have a slight problem with the premise. The movie only shows how the various changes effect the lives of a small group of people. But, if such changes were possible, wouldn't Chaos Theory dictate that there could be some drastic changes to everyone and everything. Isn't that the whole idea of Chaos theory? The theory that one very small change (a butterfly flapping its wings) could make a huge impact (the typhoon half way around the world) in things seemingly unrelated.

What do you think? Am I way off base here?

For the record, I give it a 7/10.

Movie about a boring man is interesting
11 November 2003
The only thing I knew about this movie going in was that Kathy Bates had a nude scene. Thankfully, it was brief. Jack was once again masterful and is the greatest actor of our generation. He make us care about a very boring man who is searching for some meaning to his life. I liked the vehicle of narrating the story through the letters to his sponsored child. The ending was touching. They should have included info on sending donations to "Feed the Children" with the DVD. I bet they could have raised a mint.

Enjoyed it as much as the book-- and that is a rarity.
11 November 2003
I think I was in 7th or 8th grade when I read the book, so my memories of it are somewhat cloudy, but it seems like the movie did a great job retelling this classic adventure story. It had some very nice swashbuckling. One complaint...I find it hard to believe that you could live on one bowl of soup a day for 13 years and still have enough strength to do the thing that he did. But, I am willing to overlook that.
