The Irishman (2019)
Long and boring. Yawn! It's all hype.
I love mob movies. It was great to learn a little more about Hoffa and his "political" connections of the time. However, a movie with a star studded cast doesn't make it good.
The acting was great. Each character was believable and the makeup was tremendous. However, the movie was slow and lacked what all great mob movies have, entertainment.
I appreciate the movie told a historical story, but it could have done it in half the time and I wouldn't have fallen asleep three times, having to watch it over multiple nights just to get through it.
It's all hype.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Weak, weak, weak.
Movies like this are the reason movie theaters are falling. Took the family to see this film over the holidays. I try not to watch or read reviews prior to seeing movies so I go with an open mind. Spent about $200 for the 5 of us to enjoy this much anticipated holiday season blockbuster and simply saw a bust - indicative of the movie itself.
Loved the CGI and other effects. There were even some interesting and novel concepts for the franchise. However, both the writing and some of the acting (likely a result of poor writing and editing) was terrible. Oscar Issac was probably the biggest victim of this aweful film.
I often judge a movie by how many times and how early in the film a check my watch. 30 minutes into the movie I wanted to go home.
Disney has ruined a multi generational film series.
Salt (2010)
Just because it's Jolie...
You have to be kidding right? Star power over-rates this movie. Put a no name in this lead role and the movie never makes it. Action was good and effects not so bad. Story line unbelievable, sequences unrealistic, many lines corny and lame. Glad I didn't pay to watch this film; it wouldn't have been worth the rental cost.
The movie started off well enough. Jolie an intriguing actress with depth in her character. About half way through the movie the story line becomes unrealistic. When inside the CIA headquarters and the breakouts begin, I have trouble believing that anyone could escape quite so easily. Then the Star Trek, air compressor, containment doors that close off exits... Get real. The movie gets much worse from there and while the effects, explosions and car crashes are good, it is as believable as a tourist walking into the Kremilin and assassinating the Russian President.
If you need to watch this because it's Jolie, do so with a grain of Salt...
Runaway Train (1985)
Don't waste your time...
I don't write too many reviews on films, but felt obligated to write one on this film. This was a waste of two hours of my life and if I can save you the time, my job here is done. Although the set, which appeared quite realistic, was excellent, the script, delivery and acting was weak; beyond substandard. I expected more from normally good actors. Quite honestly, I have seen better acting and received more entertainment from 'B' movies. A terrible disappointment. From the beginning of the movie, the storyline moved along far to quickly, but you understand enough of the inmate culture to keep up. However, if you think the acting and writing is going to get any better than the first five minutes, you are sorely mistaken. Don't waste any more time thinking that the movie will improve when the lead actor enters the scene; it doesn't.
The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)
109 minutes of my life that I will never get back.
Slow.
Boring.
Hardly a smile, let alone a laugh.
Such a great cast and such a waste of time.
If I had seen this in the theatre, or paid money to rent it, I would have been annoyed.
I expect a lot from a comedy and can't say I've enjoyed too many. They are either dumb or simply not funny. While this film was not particularly dumb, it was simply not funny.
It is not very often that I disagree with an IMDb rating, but this is one of those times. 3 out of 10
Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (2001)
Boring
I've always been interested in anime, but never knew where to start looking in order to find something attractive. After watching Kill Bill I saw where to begin. A friend gave Spirited Away to me to watch. Boring! While the animation was great, the detail even better, the story lacked interest. It had no plot, limited story and moved so slow I almost turned it off. This was one of the worst Disney films I've seen... Not sure why it receives such a high IMDB rating. Usually they are fairly accurate.
The next video she gave me was Metropolis which is equally boring, but with less quality animations and detail.
My quest for GOOD anime continues...
Taken (2002)
Excellent.
This was an excellent miniseries. The characters were well developed and compelling, as was the story. I would have given this a 9 out of 10 if they had paid a little more attention to detail (although they did a pretty good job of it).
For example: Why was Allie wearing shorts, cleats and shin pads the entire last two episodes. Wouldn't any of the characters thought to get her a change of clothes during her escapades...
It would also have been more credible if the writer had incorporated alien myth from outside the U.S. It's not like sightings were only within the U.S. or upon American citizens. Has there not been myth outside continental U.S.?
That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed the film and highly recommend it. Worth the watch to any sci-fi buff.
The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Well researched, stunningly gruesome, beautifully written.
This film pioneered the Hollywood image of today's serial killer. Well researched, there are minimal flaws to ruin the credibility of the gruesomely graphic files of both the cannibal Lector and "Buffalo Bill".
Ted Bundy, Jeffery Dalhmer, Clifford Olson, and lately Robert Picton have exposed the world to the sensational world of the serial killer. The media exploits the stories of these demented murderers as the consumer watches in disgusted amazement.
Silence of the Lambs showed a somewhat accurate, yet oversensationized view of the takedown of a mysterious freak of society. The killer, first portrayed as an unknown to his victims, makes you feel vulnerable, like it could be anyone. Toward the end of the film it is revealed that the killer was known to at least one of the victims, leaving you feel as though it could be your neighbour, or uncle.
This wonderful movie will have you looking over your shoulder and second glancing at those strangers who pass you by.
The Planets (1999)
Spectacular history of the journey into the furthest reaches of our solar system
This 8 "hour" series is a wonderful historical production about the history of space travel including both Russian and American perspectives. It focuses each episode on a topic like the sun, atmosphere, giants, moon etc... The film footage on both country's programs reaches from the Sun to Neptune and the moons in between. The real video and still photography is accompanied by realistic computer generated enhancements. This series is well worth the time of any astronomy buff and even those who just want to learn a lot more about our Solar System.
