Oh Hell (2022)
Oh Hell, what was that?
Here's something different. A show about a young woman who lives in a kind of parallel reality which is unsettling not just for her, but for those around her and this viewer. Nothing flash, racey or spectacular, but some chewy food for thought. IMDB has this one down as a comedy and drama and sure, there's some funny moments in every episode, but on the whole drama does this show more justice. Let's call it a quirky drama with humour. The end isn't exactly a cliffhanger (thank goodness - there's too many of those around) but it does leave me wanting more Hell.
Joe Pickett (2021)
Never heard of Joe Pickett, but ...
There's some interesting reviews here from people who have read the CJ Box book series and I can kind of see where they're coming from with regards to character development and some other details.
However, having never read one of Box's books and with only the pathetic 'Big Sky' (another series based on Box books) to make any sort of comparison, I have to say that Joe Pickett ticks every box in my book for a rollicking good binge watch.
Bring on season 2 - I'll happily watch it.
Invasion: Full of Stars (2021)
More stuff happening for no apparent reason
This episode is full of more stuff that seems to have no reason - and I'm not even talking about the aliens.
Who is, and why are they, hunting the doc and her family? Although the wife and kids could hear the husband scream, no one heard the kids scream. No explanation. Why are the few JASA scientists and bosses who seem to be interested in what's going on with their spaceship and crew listening to and taking commands from a love-struck former employee? Completely nonsensical. What's with the random kid who draws dark pictures and has epileptic fits? How is he talking to (controlling?) the aliens and why are they taking any notice of him? What about the US soldier who keeps shooting at the aliens when he surely knows by now that bullets have zero effect? Was it the US Space Farce nuking they don't know what just because they can, no discussion? Nothing new there. And finally, why did they have to drag this whole episode on and on and on ... I got so bored.
Let's hope that the final episode at least gives us a proper ending and not just a frigging cliffhanger and a promise.
Although it started off well enough, I don't think I could sit through another season of this show if it's going to be more of the same.
Arcane: League of Legends (2021)
League of Legends? Wotsdat?
Yeah, I'm not a gamer, never heard of LoL, but the trailer for this show had me drawn in immediately. My roots are in the European comics from the 70s and 80s (which is so last century) and this reminds me of those in many ways.
Specifically, I love the attention to detail in every sense. Costumes, characters, architecture, gestures and facial expressions, props and scenes, and everything else.
Sure, the story is tried and true in many ways, but then so many stories are based on just a few origin stories. Nothing wrong with that as long as the presentation is imaginative and engaging - and Arcane certainly is.
9 out of 10 from me and bring on the next season!
Pandora (2019)
Big promises, tiny delivery
The poster looks good, the story line sounds interesting (who doesn't like intergalactic threats?), the main character is pleasant to behold, and hey, we're a bit short on sci-fi at the moment, right? In other words, I was looking forward to this show.
All that changed in the first 10 minutes of episode 1. Poor dialogue, poor acting, poor characterisations. I just couldn't stand spending another minute with Pandora. The upside is, now I can focus on a show that's worth my time.
The Fourth Body (2004)
Steaming pile of sh*te
I watched the first few mind boggling minutes and from there on fast forwarded through with the occasional stop for an eye catcher. What it all boils down to though is no story and no art direction to speak of.
Yes, there are gorgeous young women exposing themselves, f*cking, giving blow jobs, whatever, but all in crappy quality recording - VHS that's been put through a washing machine, maybe?
If you want women doing what most of this 'movie' is about, or old men wanking their purple cocks (is that a spoiler?), then FFS do yourself a favour and go browse PornHub.
If you want to be bored out of your skull, please waste an hour of your life watching this steaming pile of sh*te. I'd give it a 0 out of 10 if I could.
Falling Skies (2011)
The USA is attacked by aliens ... again?
The USA is attacked by aliens - again, yawn! This is supposed to be scifi, but the aliens are very thin on the ground, their 'headquarters' are hazy, we never get a good look at the aliens themselves, their techbots or flyers and we don't know anything about them other than that they kill adults and capture children.
It appears to be more about a tiny group of fleeing population looking for food, weapons (which by all accounts don't work real well on the aliens, so why the obsession?), 'harnessed' children and the character interaction between this ragtag lot, including some really bad decisions by their military commander and his second in charge.
Haven't we seen this too many times before already? I sat through 2 episodes of pilot with a predictable storyline and no real meat, but I'll give the rest of it a miss.
