Laughed my head off at the "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" joke
22 November 2015
As a big fan of the original movies, this is something I've been looking forward to for a long time. This is actually the pilot movie to the upcoming TV series to air sometime in 2016. Both were developed by Ford Riley (Special Agent Oso, The Land Before Time) who actually wrote on the original Timon & Pumbaa show back in the 90s. The animation was really good, though you could tell at places that it was computer generated (like when Simba is walking down Pride Rock to go to the underground cave)

Glad to see they got some of the original voice actors back, even if it was only Ernie Sabella and Kevin Schon (Schon voiced Timon on-and-off when Nathan Lane was busy) and James Earl Jones, who I'm betting got paid more than the entire cast just for the handful of lines he had. Max Charles does a great job as Kion and so do the other children. Rob Lowe is okay as Simba, but I'm surprised they didn't go with his usual voice actor Cam Clarke.

For some reason I wasn't thinking this would have songs in it. However it does and they are really good, especially "Zuka Zuma" and "Tonight We Strike". Nothing compared to the Elton John classics of course. Also I'm liking the extra Swahili words the characters say.

My biggest complaint is with that honey-badger, who is extremely annoying. He really seemed out of place with everyone else acting calm. I know he's a kid and this made for kids, but he was just too hyperactive in my opinion.

Also I'm disappointed the show rewrote the canon of the first and second movies ("Simba's Pride" takes place after this show but Kion isn't present), especially on some silly plot device that wasn't even necessary. I would hope the "Guard" won't be fighting hyenas every episode. I'd much rather have a regular TV series that just focused on the Pride Lands and their everyday adventures without having a forced "good vs evil" story line.

In conclusion, I give it a 7.5/10. Can't wait for the series but I have a hard time imagining what other story-lines the show could come up with. I'm really hoping that one of those is a flashback episode with Simba and Nala as cubs. And maybe we finally see those "plenty of good lions" that were talked about but never shown...

Basically like his stint on the Daily Show
29 April 2014
Jon Oliver's always been one of the best correspondents on Comedy Central, so it was sad to see him leave the Daily Show some months back. Here we see him in his new show: Last Week Tonight, a weekly news satire on HBO.

The format is time-tested. You have two major news stories that take up the first 2/3 of the program and a guest interview for the last segment. The show is basically like last summer when Oliver took over the Daily Show for Stewart, except with more cursing.

My problem back then was that Oliver doesn't play the straight man well and we the same thing with his new endeavor. Everyone on the Daily Show was supposed to the foil to Jon Stewart's calm voice of reason. After seeing Oliver act campy for so long, it's hard to take him seriously as a host.

That being said, the variety of the stories the show picks to highlight are good. Almost all of them were stories I had not heard much about. I'll at least watch a few more episodes before I decide whether or not to stick with it.

Alpha House (2013–2014)
8/10
Funny D.C. Comedy Drama -- A Great Start for Amazon Studios
28 September 2013
With Netflix and Hulu quickly becoming production powerhouses, it would only make sense that Amazon would join in. Their first attempt is "Alpha House", created by Garry Trudeau, the man behind the Doonesbury comic strip. I haven't heard a lot about this series so far. At the time of me writing this, it doesn't even have a Wikipedia page. Nevertheless, the show is off to a good start.

"Alpha House" follows four United States Senators who live together in the same house. With rent so high in Washington DC, this is actually something that real life congressman end up doing. We see them go about their days with fund-raisers, committee meetings, lunches, and more. It appears a majority of this season will deal with re-election strategy as they try to hold onto their seats in Congress.

One of the most refreshing things about the show is that even though the four Senators are Republicans, the writers don't have people constantly belittle them and put them down in exceptionally well-written monologues. They instead parody the culture of the right-wing by cartooning the facades of it. I personally find the humor funny, but I hope the writers will do it to Democrats as well. Goodness knows liberals can have a sense of humor about their party too.

A lot of people have called this unoriginal and compared to "House of Cards". This isn't HOC, but it's not trying to be. It's a satirical comedy about the inner workings of the beltway. People crying 'Ripoff' seem to forget that HOC was a remake itself. I have a feeling once the show picks up, people will learn to like it. In the meantime, Amazon hasn't given a timetable saying when the next episodes will be released, but I can't wait to see them!

Magnolia (1999)

An Insult To Magnolia Trees Everywhere
9 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
"Magnolia" was supposed to be my new favorite film. I had just watched "Crash" (2005) and "Shortcuts" (1993) and was looking for more 'hypertext cinema' movies. When I heard about this film and its "epic mosaic" of various Los Angeles characters, I couldn't wait to watch it. Now, I wish I could get my three hours back. This is one of the worst films I have ever seen.

One of the things I hated most about it was that the opening 30 minutes was amazingly great. It starts off epic and all goes downhill from there. We are shown three urban legends, followed by an introduction of all the characters set to Three Dog Night's "One". We see a game show host (Philip Baker Hall), a kid contestant (Jeremy Blackman), a former contestant now an adult (William H. Macy), a dying man (Jason Robards), his gold digging wife (Julianne Moore), his nurse (Philip Seymour Hoffman), his estranged womanizing son (Tom Cruise), an LAPD officer (John C. Reilly), and the crack head he goes on a date with.

The story, you ask? There was no story. Just random people saying the f-word over and over again. At first it was just boring, but then it became painful to watch. It doesn't help that these are the dumbest characters I have ever seen. There wasn't a single action done by them that was realistic. From the kid who pees his pants instead of going to a bathroom, to the wife who barely reacts when she finds out her husband molested their daughter. None of the people were interesting and the film gave me no reason to care about them.

The last 20 minutes of the story goes from boring to completely absurd. The route Paul Thomas Anderson decides to go is way too gimmicky. Without giving too much away, he ended the movie in a way that had no point and proceeded to make the entire film pointless.

In the end, there was no closure. None of the characters connected in any noticeable way. Nobody ended up changing. I had so many questions that I could have filled up the entire discussion boards with them, if I cared enough to find out the answers, which I didn't. The message isn't even clear, which is a big problem if your film is supposed to be a 'message movie'. The best I can come up with is: "You can't change the past, so learn from it, no matter how bad you are". Mr. Anderson thinks he is so revolutionary, but it's the exact same moral as "The Lion King", except five times more cynical.

My film studies teacher once asked me what I thought of the "brilliant ending" (her words) and I responded: "I was still trying to figure out why Julianne Moore was cursing in the pharmacy earlier". This movie was two hours too long and far too unfocused, not to mentioned pretentious. Paul Thomas Anderson thinks he is so clever with his symbolic use of numbers, age-old twists, and shallow philosophy, even though they had been done before.

Was there anything redeeming about the movie? Well, the soundtrack by Aimee Mann was great, both her songs and the tracks by other artists, but it was so overbearing and out of place at times that I could barely make out the dialog. John C. Reilly's police officer character was good, but he kept making ridiculously stupid decisions over and over. I kept wondering if I would like to see any of the segments expanded into its own film, I couldn't think a single one that I would pay to see.

This is not a good film. This is an impostor of a film, something terrible masquerading as profound. I am a fan of 'alternate' movies and consider myself intelligent, so don't think that is the problem. I can almost bet that people who love this movie have no reason why they like it, they just do. Magnolia is a movie for cinema snobs who know everything about movies, except how to enjoy them. All in all, I want my money back and I didn't even pay to see it!

My cat napped in front of the TV and I didn't care
23 July 2013
I'm shocked both George Clooney and Steven Soderbergh were involved with this garbage. This is one of the top ten worst films I have ever seen. It was the most boring, incoherent garbage I've had the misfortune to witness. Like I said, my cat jumped in front of my television and I didn't even care that I couldn't see half the screen. That's how much I didn't care about this film! The plot is interesting, but the delivery and super-slow paced script ruined it. All these questions the characters kept asking, (over and over and over!) I didn't know the answers to and couldn't care less about them. This movie turned what was apparently a great novel into a boring space soap opera. No, I take that back, a soap opera is much better than this. I'd watch old episodes of General Hospital that this snooze-fest. I heard that this film got a rare "F" from Cinemascore, and it deserved it! Avoid this one at all costs!

Surprisingly fair portrayal of our 46th Vice President
15 March 2013
First a little background, I consider myself a Republican, but am not hardcore in any sense. I voted for Romney, but also the re-election of the Democratic governor of my state. I don't agree with the extreme views of the Tea Party, but would prefer compromise. I suppose I'm more moderate than anything.

Coming into the movie, I was really hoping for a non-partisan analysis of Cheney. With FOX News and MSNBC, it's really hard to get a source that isn't slanted one way or the other. The way the story unravels (it seemed more like a novel than a history book) tells it in a very fair way: which is what I wanted.

The decisions that Mr. Cheney made over his tenure are worth exploring, as I'm sure he is a smart man and had rationales for his actions. The documentary doesn't go into that much detail, at least not to the degree I was looking for, but I walked away satisfied. If you are wanting a look at Dick Cheney, without the BS clouding the conversation, I wholeheartedly recommend this movie.

Life of Pi (2012)

"Welcome aboard Pi's Ark"
26 November 2012
This film was truly amazing and a groundbreaking phenomenon. The viewer is taken on a journey through the eyes of 16 year old Pi as he is adrift at sea with only a Bengal Tiger for company. I thought the film might be boring, along the lines of last years "The Tree of Life", but I was kept on the edge of my seat the entire time. The way religion was presented, in an equal yet tranquilizing way, could only have been done by Ang Lee. The film's CGI and 3D are amazing, which hopefully will translate into a Special Effects Oscar this coming Spring. This film left me mesmerized and feeling a feeling that I haven't felt since watching Avatar. Put your paws up for the first film that caused me to write my first IMDb review (seriously, this is my first xD)
